Clearly with all of his experience in the MMOSphere, he knows better than us.

Yeah, because Smed's history in MMORPGs is unblemished and he never gets it wrong.
no .. because Blizz seems to agree with him. They scrapped titans and are now making short session online FPS, MOBAs, and card games.
Now Blizz is unblemished .. all their games are big hit.
Even Blizzard knows that WoW is a once in a lifetime wonder and nothing else will come that close within that genre. Its good to see other companies finally realizing they are wasting time by competing with WoW and just move on to do their own thing. But im not sure about H1Z1, even though its more polished than DayZ it is a straight ripoff with limited space and a survival aspect potentially ruined by cash shop (wait and see on that one). So i guess DBG havent really decided to do their own thing at all.
It seems that this time, he does.
What he said is self-evident to anyone looking critically at today's online gaming scene. Where are the greatest concentrations of players and game activity ? MOBA's, trading card games and short-session combat games (FPS's, War Thunder, World of Tanks, etc.). And those genres seem to be rapidly growing as well...
There's also a very noticeable lack of big-budget AAA MMORPG's in development currently (definitely in the west, anyway).
lol, thanks for the laugh..
As if the days of H1Z1 is going to take over... right?
"I firmly believe the days of the WoW-style MMO are over," Smedley said. "And that means we have to change with the times. Luckily, we were kind of early on that bus as opposed to late."
EQNext development says otherwise.
"Smedley said Daybreak's new zombie game H1Z1 is, by definition, an MMO. But he explained that a better description for it would be a "session-based online game with a lot of people."
There you have it. The future of MMORPG's is to remove the RPG.
Honestly I look forward to our genre returning to the geeky roots we started with. I never had more fun than before MMORPG's became mainstream. Back when 200k was living high on the hog, because our niche market was just that small.
Saga of Lucimia is just yet another indy dev team trying to return us to our roots. While the game doesn't appeal to the vast majority of the current MMORPG market, that's ok! I'd rather see 200 mmorpgs that all cater to small niche audiences, and do what they do extremely well, than have 10-20 AAA mmo's trying to appeal to the mass market.

Well yeah, we knew that. That's why EQ3 was resdesigned into EQN, losing a years worth of work.
Themeparks/WoW clones just aren't financially sustainable. The design does NOT work for anyone but WoW in the long term.
The future of MMOs is variety. And not just in genre, but also in different styles of games.
There will always be a place for WoW styled games, just like there is for sandboxes and shooter MMOs.
As we get more different kinds I imagine the market will get more balanced.

LMAO, someone needs to tell WoW that!! Anyway, I'd take anything he said with a very large pinch of salt.
Blizzard's stated reason was that they simply couldn't make Titan 'fun', was it not?
Look, that aside, any gamer will tell you that just because the mainstream big publishers (and wannabe mainstream big publishers...) say something is 'dead' it doesn't make it so. Plenty of genres flourish outside of the mainstream.
Smed is just living in the echo chamber of faulty conventional industry wisdom and parroting what his peers are saying. His views have little value. He is just a guy that was luckily enough once to know some guys that bottled lightning and has cruised on that ever since.
The fact remains that he isn't exactly known for getting it right, or telling the truth even.

What did you expect Blizzard to say?
"We cant make profitable (enough) MMO"?
Blizzard is not very good in originality, and they had a problem that this time around most copied them, so they didnt really know what to do. And obviously copying WoW was not going to work, and obviously they thought none of the alternatives on the market were attrarctive enough.
problem with WoW clones is that they cost a lot to make and cant get enough money fast enough, not even biggest IP helps. that design just cant prosper any more, aka not viable.
And yeah, its really not some new revelation.
I think in a way he is right. It is just very difficult for people from the mmorpg generation these days to sit for hours on end to play these days.
Likelihood is the only one that can be successful from this point on are either high-intensity short sessions mmo (open world pvp but not persistent), or low-intensity long session mmo (ie. empiring building, relaxing pve, or crafting type of mmo) where you can watch tv, make phone calls, cook food etc do multiple things at a time.
Long sessions high intensity (ie. open world pvp persistent mmo or 20-40 man organised raids, etc) are just not ideal anymore because people just don't have to time for it and when they do they want to play something less stressful, not more stressful.
Isn't that the same thing? Can't make a MMO fun enough for the mass market ... pretty much mean that its day is over.
and if blizz cannot do it, i doubt anyone can do better.
considering we all knew what titan was and for all anybody knows titan was an earlier iteration of the MMOFPS they're making that may have even been more like defiance.. but they realised that an mmofps wasnt the way to go so they changed it to a session based team shooter.... no one has any details of what titan was going to be wether it be an MMORPG, MMOFPS or any other iteration of MMO so it's hard to speculate why they decided to scrap it other than the fact that it wasnt fun enough in it's current form...
for all we know titan might have been bait to pull attention away from overwatch or something... nobody knows.
Obviously the boss just doesn't know when to shut up! But then again, if you're superman, apparently you can say and do what you want. Lies after lies and failures after failures, "bullets", they keep bouncing off him, still at the end of the day he still sits on that throne.
Yeah sure, apparently sometimes chickens can pop out a golden egg. H1Z1 is like a shot in the dark that hit the bulls-eye but it doesn't matter, WOW-Style games are not over, not even close.
Wouldn't it be funny if his old co-worker, who he now says "with other words" will fail, was to have a major success with Pantheon, Rise of the fallen? Personally, I wont remember this thread but I hope someone will and can Necro it once that has come true.
Hah, yeh no shyt. Like we needed Smed to tell us that. What a buffoon.
