I am seriously thinking of getting SWG, but every forum I go to people are saying that SWG is dying daily as well as SoE in general? Is the game going to be around for a few years or is it on its last leg?
As you'll be new to SWG you probably won't have the same issues people who played it before the "Combat Upgrade" have. If I were you, I'd just play it. I could rant and rave about it for days on end but that wouldn't matter. Play it, see what you think. When you get tired of it, look up NCSoft.
Nah, I've never played CoH so I couldn't tell you how it plays. I have played Guild Wars though, it's not bad, but it's not an MMO. When I said that, I was thinking of Tabula Rasa though it's not an mmo either from what I've seen of it. I'd shop around if I were you. Try afew here and there. If it's space you're after, you should try EVE Online. I tried a free trial with it and it's not bad. Looks good, though the control takes alittle getting used to. It's like learning to play a strategy game for the first time.

I dont think anyone can answer your questions without bias Devinias. Those who like the changes will tell you that SWG is as strong as ever and will never die. Those who dislike the changes will tell you that SWG died almost two months ago.
Basicly what it boils down to is each persons opinion.
Honistly though, I would wait about a month and a half to two more months. Give em a chance to fix the major bugs that currently run rampent. Then give it a shot.
After all, if you waited this long to pick up the game, whats two more months?
Yeah, come to think of it I guess its the same postings for alot of games...like WoW or CoH or others...all the forums I have noticed have the "I love this game/I hate this game" posts all over.
They took away our crafting and made it so that Docs can't get XP in a med center.
Tp me that was just plain stupid. Some people say that was done to prevent xp from tumbling. However they could have made it so Docs got XP from wound healing and not damage healing.
Also most teams want the jedi to be the healer.
As far as the usefulness of Docs go it reminds me of an expression my grandmother used to use..
"they are about as useful as tits on a boar hog"
Support Bacteria, its the only culture some people have.
If you do decide to try it out, choose a server like Bria or Ahazi. Those are still populated with crafters and such. You see, the thing about SWG is that all the items you use have to be created by another player. There are no NPCs with unlimited supplies and no one uses the bazzar (auction house) to sell things because you're not allowed to sell anything there for over 5,000 credits.
I logged on to my server for the first time in 6 months and there wasn't even a vendor who had a droid to sell. Its kinda crappy that SWG won't let you have alts on the same server, so it makes you have to choose crafting or combat, and no one wants to pay $15 bux a month just to make imaginary weapons all day.
I was a long time SWG player before the combat upgrade, but I no longer play.
The game is going through an adjustment period right now, but now wouldn't be a bad time to give it a shot. There was a good influx of new players, and even the old ones who stayed are still relearning the game!
I can't say personally whether the game is worth playing or not after the CU. It had some major problems prior to it, which the CU was supposed to fix. However, instead of a fix, they did a re-do. I wasn't interested in learning a new game that I'd already been playing for near 2 years, so I decided to go to a game that actaully WAS new to me.
I do not think SWG is about to "die" like the haters say, but it is in a little bit of trouble despite what the hardcore fanbase would have you believe.
Bottom line is, there is a lot of fun to be had in SWG, and the best way to figure out if its for you, is to grab a copy and play for the trial month. Worst case scenario, you're out 30 bucks for the total experience.
To me, the price of a promising game is always worth the risk of not picking it up after the free month!
I really hope that *insert game name here* will be the first game to ever live up to all of its pre-release promises, maintain a manageable hype level and have a clean release. Just don't expect me to hold my breath.
from what ive heard(ive never played it but ive seen all the forums and what people have to say about it) i think people who say its dying are the people who didnt like the cu at the time. some have goten used to it but some have closed there accont. but the game is not dying. to say the game is dying is ignorant. new players will come because of the total exprance pack. i dont know anything about how it actuly plays and im sure that someone will say something about it along the lines of "how would you know". but this game is not going until theres something to replace it. we all know that star wars will never die because of all the money made of it and its fanbace. so why do you think this will die so quickly.
If you decide to try the game, you are invited to join us on Naritus galaxy. Many from this forum have started a character there. You will get advice, company, travel expenses and starter equipment (no strings attached). Try contacting Novarider, Delos, Marguul or Noobia via in game mail or tell.
Currently many new players have started the game, so now would be a good time to start if you plan to find others to group and level up with.
If you are primarily a solo player it does not matter when you start and waiting a few more weeks for the devs to fix bugs introduced by the combat revamp wont hurt you.
I played for just under a year in SWG and can honestly say I enjoyed about 90% of it, no regrets. And unlike the majority of people leaving, it wasn't because of bugs or changes (I left before CURB, and can say that's not such a bad thing...), its because of a lack of content and the increasing number of jedi. Logging on, it wouldn't take me more than 15 minutes to run into some 1337 d00d!!! with a lightsaber, killing everyone around him. After that came the people who were grinding to become jedi.
What happened is I became bored after about 7 or 8 months of playing, there was nothing left for me to do. I had given most of the professions a try, mastered the 3 or 4 I was interested in, and could either make loads of money or grind jedi. Neither option was interesting. So, I switched over to Chimaera, the unofficial RP server, had a blast with the community there, but also hit the boredom stonewall.
Anyhow, I've got no clue as to how the game is running now, since I left before the RotW expansion and CU. Best advice I can give you is to nab the retail and try it out for the initial free month, which comes with the retail version. If you like it, keep going. If not, little lost.
And as for the server, it depends more on what you're into. I recommend Europe-Chimaera if you want to try roleplaying, or Bria for PvP. Note that this information is a little outdated by now.
Originally posted by devinias I am seriously thinking of getting SWG, but every forum I go to people are saying that SWG is dying daily as well as SoE in general? Is the game going to be around for a few years or is it on its last leg?
Ok first off: Anyone claiming that SOE is dying off is deluding themselves. SOE has over a million subscribers to their games and have the backing of one of the largest electronic game companies in the world, if not the largest.
Second: SWG isn't dying off. There are more players on every server now. Anyone who logs in daily can see this. Servers that used to be 'light' are now medium. For a while the game had plateau'd in subscribers and initially the CU did see a large exodus of players. But right now servers are full. LOTS of new players are playing SWG now, go to any 'noob' planet and you'll see lots of blue and purple dots flitting about the radar (players) where before they were ghost towns.
Honest truth: Many veteran players hated the CU and left. On some servers they left in droves, on others it wasn't quite as pronounced. Nobody knows how many left because SOE hasn't released that data yet. However, the information they did put out over 2 weeks ago was that new subscriptions were roughly equal to the folks leaving.
With TV adds out for the game now people are STILL buying it and new players join every day. This week alone 3 "true" new players joined our guild, nobody left. That's a small data slice but it's the only FACTUAL data I can give. That tells me that the tide is starting to turn. Nobody in our guild has quit the game in about 3 weeks now and in that time we've had over 20 new players join.
Honest answer: SWG isn't going to 'die'. It's owned by LucasArts and SOE together. SOE isn't going to 'die'. Honestly, with over 1 million subscribers to their various titles why would they close up shop?
Another key fact to remember when hearing rumors of this type:
in 1999 people said UO was going to die because EQ came out. It didn't... it is still in production to this day.
In 2001 people said EQ was going to die because various games came out. It didn't... it's still in production to this day and is still in the top 5 MMO's based on numbers of subscribers.
People swore AO would die.. it didn't People swore AC would die.. it hasn't.
Matter of fact I can't think of 1 doom and gloom prediction about an MMO that came true...
Just some facts to chew on when asking this particular question.
The question you should be asking is: Is it worth it to me to spend $30 to find out if I LIKE the game.
To me the answer is simple: $30 is peanuts go for it. If you honestly can't afford $30 then wait for a free trial. One is bound to come out sooner or later. Usually SOE puts out a free trial about 2-3 months after a major upgrade to one of their titles.

$30 for SWG is well worth it espically since they now include all three titles (SWG:Main, JTL, ROTW) in one box for $30. The only bad thing that I can think of to buying SWG is that once you play it you wont want to leave and will be stuck paying $15 a month for the rest of its existance...
Most of the negitive things said here are only small factors that are easily played around if you know how to...
like Jedi killing everyone around them.. I dont see how that is possiable since you either have to be a Overt member of the Imperials or Rebels to openly fight in PvP or accept a /duel.
The market only allowing 5,000 credits? that changed to 20,000 quite some time ago. (still petty cash but they added "vendor search" so you can find thing on vendors galaxie wide).
I admit if you dont like to RolePlay or dont find a vaild guild within a year you are more than likely to get bored with just the same old stuff, but SOE adds new things too and so you will never get bored with the game if you dont mind doing quests etc.
As for the one character per server.. IMHO that was a genius idea for SOE look how many extra acounts they have opened per household now and are more than likely making about $5,000+ extra a month off Access accounts alone. Although I hate this very much it is a wise business idea and will not change until they are making over 3/4 of a million a month.
All in all SWG wont die and it will be better for purging the people that didnt want to play the game anymore anyway that what the CU did it got rid of the poeple who where border line in this game and decided to jump off the horse rather than ride on it for another mile down the rode.

I'm sorry, but this is all opinion, stated as fact. You cannot tell someone else what will or wont be worth their money.
Also, to state that SWG "wont die" is opinion as well. You have absolutely no control over if the game continues to run or not. While they might, and I stress the word might, have regained some amount of the subscriptions they lost right after the CU, those new subscriptions mean jack if they are only active or paid for one month or less. Perhaps in another month or two real numbers as to overall net loss/gain will be out, but right now, to say the servers are at the same load lvl that they were before the CU is complete speculation.
As for your reasoning why people left, not only is it only your opinion, but flawed opinion to boot. Just like with Eirl, you dont know why those people left. The reason why I left had little to do with dedication. If I wasnt dedicated, I wouldnt bother now. Many of the players who left were as dedicated, if not more so than those who stayed. They just got tired of being jerked around. Take a look around the web at what they are saying. I mean really read it. Dont just read the first line or two. Most of them loved this game. Most of them were long time, hard core players. Several hours a day. Thats dedication. Most of us stayed through the broken promises of the past. The Smuggler fix, the eventual class balance that was promised, the promise that fixing the game would take center stage to adding new content. The promise that the CU wouldnt go live untill it was ready. You cannot keep misleading people and expect them to pay you for it. Just doesnt work that way.
You might like the game, for what ever reasons you have. That in no way means though that everyone else will. You CU-supporters need to come to grips with that fact.
Simply put, supporters and haters of the CU will probably never agree. I couldn't say though. I'm growing tired of telling people it sux, cause honestly, I don't think it'll be that bad for the people who don't know what it was like before, or the people that hated the old system. I guess it all just comes down to game bugs and balancing issues, the two flaws SWG has always had according to what several people on both sides have said in station.com forums and some in these forums. Who cares, play it anyway, it's just money. If SOE doesn't get it, someone else will.
Best advice I can give you is to either wait for a Free Trial Period or hop on a friends account. Like someone above said, paying $30 for coasters isn't fun.
Ico Oh, cruel fate, to be thusly boned. Ask not for whom the bone bones. It bones for thee.
Originally posted by Blkcat $30 bucks is still alot to pay for coasters though. Buying the game before trying it first, especially with the mixed reviews that the game has been geting, IMO would be wasting your money. $30 isnt alot, I agree, but it is way too much if you end up only playing it for two weeks and then it sits on your shelf collecting dust.
You mean, as opposed to the single player games that you spend $50 for that sit on the shelf collecting dust after about 2-3 weeks?
Don't get me wrong, if you REALLY want to wait for one, wait for a free trial. But at the rate boxes are vanishing from the shelves of our local Best Buy and Circuit City don't hold your breath for a free trial. I went in last monday and they'd just put about 30 boxes on the shelf. Wednesday those 30 boxes were down to 3
Saturday it looked like they'd re-stocked and had about 20 up there again. I'm going to stop by today to see how many are left.
Needless to say, as long as box sales are good the chances of a free trial are slim.
Like I said: IF you really want to wait for a free trial, do so. But $30 isn't bad considering you get the full game + all the expansions. Oh... and if you sell your barc speeder (that comes with the TOE box) in game you can nete about 5-6 million credits (more on some servers) that will let you really set yourself up so you don't have to sweat the money in the game.
Anyhow... play it how you will.... If nothing else sell the BARC for 6-7 mil and then EBAY the credits to make back the price of the game LOL

SWG is in no danger of dying any time soon. Contrary to what people are saying, after the CU and the mass exodus, there was a HUGE influx of layers when the Total Experience boxed set came out. Mos Eisley is PACKED with new people. Even the lesser-populated areas like Tyrena, Corellia have a decent population.
All games die eventually, but existing players are responding positively to the current game.

The flaw in your thinking is that with a single player game, you can always go back and play it, at NO CHARGE! You already own the game. With a MMOG, your only leasing the game. Also, with a single player game, you never have to worry if the game servers will still be around, next time you might feel like playing it. MMOG's come, MMOG's go. Will SWG be around in a year? Maybe, but maybe not. You dont have to worry about that with a single player game. Honistly though, its apples and oranges.

Forgive me if I take your claims with a grain of salt. You can claim all you want that its flying off the shelves, and maybe it is in your area. However, in my area, EB Games has 4 copies of TOE, been there now for almost a month. Not one of em sold. The manager was a SWG player. He is also a close friend of mine. He also quit when the CU went live, and doesnt fail to tell his customers about it, or the service he recieved from SoE CS while he was playing. Needless to say it wasnt good. The local Best Buy has maybe 10 copies of it and it dont look like those are "flying" off the shelves either. Sales change from area to area. Just because it might, and I still stress the word might, be selling in your area doesnt mean its doing so everywhere else.
Needless to say, as long as box sales are good the chances of a free trial are slim.
Thats based on the assumption that box sales are good. There has been no third party collected numbers, as of yet, that can say if it is or isnt selling. All your doing is speculating, and doing so based on no hard facts. Like I said, with all the bad press this game has gotten as of late, I would be very surprised if SoE didnt have some kind of free trial, just to try to pull in some new people.

I will agree that my statements are speculative. I never said they weren't. However, according to SOE themselves the number of new people joining verses the number of people who left in the first 2 weeks after CU was a wash. That's per SOE and, yes, could be a lie, but it would be a huge mistake for them to do so. So, assuming that that statement by SOE (and this website) is accurate at least the first 2 weeks after CU there was no drop in total subscriptions to the game. Also a safe assumption: The number of people "cancelling" after CU probably dropped dramatically after the first two weeks or so because everyone who WAS going to cancel, had cancelled. Speaking from experience all of the people who I knew in game that cancelled did so within the first couple weeks after the CU came out (most in the first 2 or 3 days and some of them are back).
So yes, my statement is 'speculative' but no less 'speculative' than yours. And FAR more accurate than people who are stating that the game is "dying". If you aren't PLAYING how can you make that claim? I play. I see new faces in game every day. Places that once were empty are now crowded. "newbie" cities are packed with players now where they were becoming empty, if not complete ghost towns, before.
There ARE bugs, but they're being fixed at a steady clip. The Entertainer bug is gone already (and I honestly didn't expect to see that one get fixed so fast) and missions seem a lot less wonky now as well... though they still sometimes bug out on us...
Like I said, yes the game is worth getting. The full package is a whopping $30 But if you really want to wait for a trial, do so... just don't be surprised if it's a few months before one comes out.
And neither SWG or SOE is going to 'die out' anytime soon. I laugh every single time I hear doom & gloom predictions from people who decide they don't like this or that MMO. Every single MMO I've ever seen hit the shelves has had some moron or other saying "It'll be dead in 6 months"
Haven't seen an MMO yet that was cancelled within 6 months of opening... Hell, even E&B (which was horrid) survived over 2 years. And it only got cancelled because it never had more than 37,000 subscribers. SWG currently has roughly 250,000.... it isn't going anywhere.

I can completely understand your feelings. I don't know why they decided Doc had to be a combat profession now. Alot of people (like you from the sound of it) liked Doc because you didn't have to go out and combat grind to get anywhere with it. A doctor could stay in town all day long, gain at what he was good at and not be part of the combat side of the game. I loved that about the game, there were professions that were not combat professions no craftsman. Like the entertainer, both professions had a real purpose outside of combat.

I am sorry to see a veteran such as yourself leave the game but I do completely understand why you did.

SOE has stated their numbers have stayed pretty much the same. They've lost as many as they've gained.
"Plauged by balance issues and bugs" Okay please tell me which MMO is perfectly balanced and has no bugs. If you ever find it, you'll only be able to play it for a few hours. Then you'll have to wake up and go to school or work.
I have played since release, and I LOVE the CU. It's pretty much everything eveyone asked for (except the Doctors, they took a non-combat prof and made it combat), and now they're complaining SOE listened to them.
I mean let's list some of the biggest pre-CU:
1. You can solo anything. That's gone now. You have to group to kill somethings, and people are complaining aobut being forced to group.
2. Buffs are too strong. That's gone now, and again people are complaining about being forced to group.
3. Everyone only wears one type of armor. That's gone now, and people complain that only certain professions can wear certain armor.
4. <insert class of the month> Is uber and beats all other classes in PvP. The classes are now not as out of wack, and the people that had the uber classes from before are complaining they don't have an uber class anymore.
5. Combat is uninteractive. Queue up a few specials and go get a sandwich. Well it's a lot more interactive now, and everyone says the old way is better
This is everything we've asked for, and now that's it's been changed, people are complaining about it.
I will say that I think Doctors may have a legit gripe, since they've gone from a non-combat to a combat profession, but if you want to craft, go BE. You'd have enough points to go BE and Doctor if you want to do both.
The one major problem I have is all the jedi. I never thought I'd be complaining about this. It has nothing to do with continutiy (I threw all problems I had with that out when Wookiees could not only JOIN the Imperials, but they could be high ranking officers) but it finally hit home when I kept needing some wounds healed and I always found a Jedi to heal me before a doctor.
Then I started watching some PvP battles. There were more jedi than all the other classes combined, and I'm talking there were around 70 people per side. Anytime you have that many people wanting to play the same class, something is wrong. This was made worse when SOE decided to give double XP days that allowed people that normally wouldn't have the attention span to finish the grind, to finish it quickly. I would love to see them implement the perma-death penalty for Jedi.

Have fun
Erillion

Ok first off:
Anyone claiming that SOE is dying off is deluding themselves. SOE has over a million subscribers to their games and have the backing of one of the largest electronic game companies in the world, if not the largest.
Second:
SWG isn't dying off.
Honest truth:
Many veteran players hated the CU and left.
Honest answer:
SWG isn't going to 'die'.
People swore AO would die.. it didn't
People swore AC would die.. it hasn't.
Matter of fact I can't think of 1 doom and gloom prediction about an MMO that came true...
Just some facts to chew on when asking this particular question.
The question you should be asking is:
Is it worth it to me to spend $30 to find out if I LIKE the game.
To me the answer is simple: $30 is peanuts go for it. If you honestly can't afford $30 then wait for a free trial. One is bound to come out sooner or later. Usually SOE puts out a free trial about 2-3 months after a major upgrade to one of their titles.

$30 bucks is still alot to pay for coasters though.
Buying the game before trying it first, especially with the mixed reviews that the game has been geting, IMO would be wasting your money.
$30 isnt alot, I agree, but it is way too much if you end up only playing it for two weeks and then it sits on your shelf collecting dust.

Best advice I can give you is to either wait for a Free Trial Period or hop on a friends account. Like someone above said, paying $30 for coasters isn't fun.
Ico
Oh, cruel fate, to be thusly boned. Ask not for whom the bone bones. It bones for thee.
Like I said:
IF you really want to wait for a free trial, do so.

The full package is a whopping $30
But if you really want to wait for a trial, do so... just don't be surprised if it's a few months before one comes out.

SOE has stated their numbers have stayed pretty much the same. They've lost as many as they've gained.
