From my experience with MMO's in general I'd have to say that, right now, CCP and Mythic are the two best game makers out. Unfortunately EVE is boring beyond belief and DAOC just isn't my style. Both are very good games but just lack whatever it is that makes me enjoy SWG so much.
Besides It's Star Wars.... and I'm a Star Wars junkie.

It's hard to pinpoint the aspect to swg that drew me in at first as well. Probably cause it was my first mmo. I couldn't say, I know why I left though. Unfortunately, I think the aspects that drew me in are still there, I just didn't want to learn a new system after having just gotten the hang of the old one. Oh well, if I can figure out what it is about swg other than star wars that I still love, I'll reactivate and send you guys a /tell.
It's a funny sort of game. The more the devs add new stuff into the game, the more players leave the game!! It must be the first game in history that looses a slice of its player base everytime a new patch is thrown in.
To be fair there are plenty of other games out there that are much better put together and have way less in terms of bugs, lag and enforced downtime for updates and patching. But as some others have mentioned in here, it is Star Wars and really, that's about the only thing going for it.
And to be frank, if it was something other than SW, the lillies would of gone onto its grave ages ago.

Strange. I wonder why 15 new members joined my guild recently and more are lining up. And what does this sea of blue (newb) blips mean every time I pass through Mos Eisley ?
Players leaving the game since patch 18 ? Where ? When ? What are you smoking (tongue in cheek) ?

I have seen some servers hitting heavy load now at certain times as well. But it don't matter, the dieing game rant will go on and on.

Yup I noticed a couple at "heavy" last night....
First time I've seen that since I dunno when.

Yup I noticed a couple at "heavy" last night.... First time I've seen that since I dunno when.
Just checked in at 7:07 PM Eastern and 1 server, Europe-Infinity has a light load. 12 have medium load, 7 have heavy load, 3 have very heavy load and 2, Bria and Ahazi, have extremely heavy load.
Go Ahazi!
Until you cancel your subscription, you are only helping to continue the cycle of mediocrity.

Interesting advice. Obviously you never read the DAOC forums or the WOW forums or the EQ Forums or the AO forums or the UO forums or the EVE forums or the Horizons forums or the Matrix forums or the AC forums or the AC2 Forums. Plenty of people complain about every MMO that comes out. Basically anytime someone feels something isn't the way they think it should be they will complain.
The proper advice is: If you don't want to risk $30 wait for a free trial. But the game isn't dying, not yet anyway, lol.

Done. I cropped it down a bit and lowered the quality some to decrease the file size. There are 4 servers that aren't shown, they're at the top of the list. They are the 3 Euro servers each with light load and Tarquinas with a medium load. This screenshot was grabbed at approximately 9:40 PM eastern so since it would be nearing 3am in London it's not a surprise that the Euro servers are on light load.

I'm speculating that SOE is using a different metric these days to indicate server loads. Look at it this way, if populations were remotely booming don't you think SOE would be all over advertising it?
Edit: Now before anyone gets their panties in a bind, I'm not necessarily knocking the game : )

The only time I've seen SOE go out of their way to advertise subscriptions was with the ads for EQ2. Sure you get the occasional press release but that's rare.

WHEE!!! Gotta love conspiracy theories!!! What possible reason would SOE try to "trick" you into thinking there were a lot of people playing? It's definitely more crowded. I just logged out from a 24+ on 24+ PVP battle on Tallus Boy was that fun.
Note: Edit was to correct the number of combattants. I went back and couldn't verify the 40 figure but each group had at least 3 full groups of 8 so it was at least 24 on 24... there were a few floaters as well but I won't count them in the interest of accuracy
Either way.... it was a hell of a lot of fun.

Originally posted by devinias I am seriously thinking of getting SWG, but every forum I go to people are saying that SWG is dying daily as well as SoE in general? Is the game going to be around for a few years or is it on its last leg?
Hello Devinias and welcome to MMORPG.com!
No game is ever worth getting if it is dying off! (like AC2 for example which has roughly 6k to 24k total playes after being out for almost 3 years. )
First, the hard facts about SWG:
1. SWG right now has a solid 200k players.
2. SWG has re-couped ALL money invested into making it. (It cost 25 million to make.)
3. SWG right now is turnign a true profit. It is a bona fid successfull MMORPG. It has been out for 2+ years.
Sooo, according to the hard, solid, true, facts, SWG is NOT failing. SWG is NOT dying off. If and when SWG ever drops to 50k accounts, THEN it can be said SWG is failing, is in danger of actually d-y-i-n-g off.
Here is some more:
4. A mmorpg needs at minimum 50k players to have a chance in heaven or hell of EVER re-couping all its investment money.
5. Any mmorpg that has 100k players is a rock, solid, HIT mmorpg. Please re-read #5 again.
As someone posted in a thread on the "PUB" at this site, only a few hundred complainers get attention on forums out of the HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of players for a mmorpg. Have you seen 100k people complaining about SWG? (that would be half of all its players.)
Is SWG worth playing and experiencing? YES! Is SWG dying off? NO! Is SWG currently changing? YES! BTW, ALL mmorpgs change. It is one of the definitions OF a mmorpg. The main reason SWG is worth looking at is that it has sooo, sooo, sooo, many game features, game mechanics, that are revolutionary. That no other MMORPG has ever had, or is planning to have. SWG is baslcally the child of Ultima Online + Anarchy Online. There is absolutly no danger of SWG dying after you buy it LOLOL!!
Originally posted by IcoGames Not to be too cynical, but yeah I'm not buying those server loads lol.
Don't, thats up to you. But when they were all on light they were the burden of proof to everyone that the game was going down hill. Now all the sudden its not beleivable when its something other then that. How convieniant.

I'm saying they might be using a different metric, not lying. There's a difference
Anywho ... SOE used to brag about the numbers of players when EQ2 went live. If any of their games were increasing in population to warrant those types of server loads, don't you think they'd be advertising it?

That may not be lieing to you but where I come from changing the scale without notice IS a lie.
Advertising what? Have you watched Sci-Fi channel lately? You can't NOT see their commericials. As for advertising how well they are doing, when has their marketting department EVER gotten it right? And lets just say for a minute your little conspiracy theory was true, what purpose would it serve if they weren't doing it for a marketting campaign? Too fool the people already in the game? We already know what the populations look like!

If I wrong and server populations have gone up that much, I'm speculating SOE would do some advertising to show an increase in players. It's called consumer confidence, lol, and companies will do almost anything to raise it. Throwing up a guick blurp on making a milestone doesn't cost that much.
Btw, I have seen those commercials. Have you flown with Han Solo in the Falcon?

Like you said, speculating. And as I pointed out, when has the marketting team for SWG ever gotten it right? The only time SWG has ever gotten publicity that I can recall is when the players are in uproar. They never pushed the product after it was released. Not to mention you have the bastard relationship of LA and SOE, which LA right now couldn't program their way out of a wet paper bag.
Thats about all I have to say on this new conspiracy theory. You are trying to say you beleive SOE is lieing about the server populations by alternating the "description" for the current population count on each server. And just doing it now after the CU, the last movie in the Star Wars saga and a new expansion all came out. Sounds real thin to me.

It is always possible that Total Experience sales are not the whole factor in higher server loads. TE sales combined with increasing concurrency rates (maybe because people like the changes after they actually try them) are driving the loads up.
And yes, a few posts back I mentioned their ads for EQ2, but that was the first advertisement of numbers I've seen for a SOE game. They occasionally publish rough numbers in press releases.
Until you cancel your subscription, you are only helping to continue the cycle of mediocrity.
Granted there wasn't a commercial, but SOE absolutely pushed the product prior to and after the initial release. Various gaming magazines had articles and adds. For at least a few months there were dedicated articles in Star Wars Insider.
