My friends and I have created a mmorpg in the pirate universe, what do you guys think of the idea?

We love mmorpg, but we don't really have time to play them anymore...

So we've created a mmo for casual players. With PvP. Lots of PvP. Cause, let's be honest, smashing other players' face is a lot of fun ;P

Mind telling us what you think ?

    To be honest, making a game is not easy and I believe If you finish this game you and your friends should be proud of yourselves. When people judge things like "Oh this game is crap, because of controls or graphics, such and such"... criticizeing  sometimes helps but at least people should be honest with theirselves. I know a lot of people who uses Unity Engine, they can make copycat games and calling theirselves developers... Except the security  post above my message, looks good and Idea is different than most mmo's.. I wish you luck my friend. ;)

    Well it is a interesting idea.

     

    I have no idea how viable a true indie MMO is in the long run but as long as it is fun for you to make that does not really matter. Just be careful when it comes to investing and expanding. That have killed more projects then anything else.

    It's just that we spent so much time on the game, we've coded everything from the ground up.

    So when it came to making the website, well, let's admit it... We've been lazy and used wordpress. We know it sucks security wise, that's why the website is on a different server than the game. So even if some plugin has security issues, and somehow allows root access on the server, it won't affect the game.

    The website is not really important since we've backups and no user data are saved on it (besides users email that we will delete once we've launch the game, in a few weeks).

    For the game, we've been careful to take care of all the usual security problems (SQL injections, XSRF, XSS, hashed and salt password, SSL, up to date debian, etc.), can't guaranty we've got it all covered, but we've been really careful.

    Anyway, thank you for the tips on how to make wordpress safer/faster. I've already deleted the default admin user and I'm digging into wordpress configuration for the rest.

     What they said about cryptography, 2010 is a NIST deadline and just because government doesn't use it anymore doesn't mean everyone else should run around like headless chooks. Just go HTTPS and use whatever certificate your host recommends.

    As for bloat, try viewing the page source for www.google.com or www.microsoft.com

    The only thing he's right about is the admin login.

    We've put 15 friends on an alpha version, they have played 3 months and then stopped. They've even sneaked a few of their friends in the alpha when we had told them not to do it...

    So I take that as a good sign. Inviting your friends and playing 3 months on an empty server which main content is PvP... It think it's not bad :)

    How will it go in the long run ? Well I'm working part time, and we've a few features on our waiting list. So adding content won't be a problem. I think it should last quite a long time, unless no one likes it of course.

    Well the SSL part isn't worrying me, we didn't buy a real certificate yet.

    I think he's right on the bloat part : we could at least minify the css and js, and activate gzip. I've got fiber connection, so I didn't pay much attention to that. 10 sec to load the page, that's just unacceptable. It is a static page, nothing magical on it. Our game which is 200 more complex load in a couple of sec...

    Anyway, I can improve the website, so why wouldn't I ? :P

    Just remember to be smart with your money once you go live, especially if it really takes off. Unless one of you guys have a degree in finance get a advisor and have at least a few hours of consultation on how to efficiently manage money. =) I would also recommend to set up a limit on the amount accounts you let on the servers. A staggered release might sound like a weird concept in this day and age but it will really help you manage the quality of the experience and keep the initial costs down. 

     

    Then again you might have this in place already, in that case never mind. It is just something people tend to forget.

    Currently the game can support about 900 simultaneously connected players, next week end i'll make a modification that should double that number. On top of that, we can switch on a new server in about 5 minutes. So we're not really worried about getting too many players, but rather not having enough... Same thing with the money :P

    Yeah, but that's quite a bit of work. We would really love to do it in the close future, but right now, we'd like to know if they are players out there who are actually interested in that game (we probably should have asked this question before making the game though :P)

    nah... blind faith is much better.

     

    But i have a hard time seeing the way you monetize it actually earn you... well... enough to pay for the "fika paus" let alone the operating costs of the game. 

     

    Or am i missing something.

    Well, we did not spend too much time think of the money, since you know, it costs us roughly 200€/month, we're 3 engineers we can afford it, even if no one pays.

    Then it really depends on how many players we have and how much they pay, lots of players, lots of money, no players, no money... But we're not really in there for the money anyway, it's a hobby, we're more looking for friends to play with us, and if they can participate paying the server that's cool as well :P

    Why ouch?  Every week there are dozens of games popping onto Kickstarter.  I don't know if they charge you to start a campaign or just when it funds.

    I am going to leave this with wishing you the best of luck. Mostly because you come off as incredible naive and with out a plan... This in turn trigger some weird habits in me (from experience and education) to try and make a plan for you. Now i i am sure you have  a very solid plan both development wise and financially so it is not like that will be needed. 

     

    So best of luck i may the odds always be in your favor.
