I mean clean install, as in...you won't be able to upgrade.
If you have Windows 7 or 8, you can actually upgrade to the beta with a patch. It is like installing a patch.
If you have windows XP or Vista, you can't do that, you're going to need to use the ISO file afaik. (will require a USB stick / DVD or any device which can be used as a boot drive).
Same thing if you build a new PC, it will require a USB stick / DVD, go into BIOS, set that drive as your boot drive, and it will launch the preview.

Gotcha. Well, if you are an insider with a preview of Windows 10 with a non-genuine version of Windows 7, I just wonder if upgrading to the preview of 10 will allow you to have the full version at launch or will it switch over to a non-genuine version of 10 when released?
It's kind of confusing since they said "As long as you are running an Insider Preview build and connected with the MSA (Microsoft Account) you used to register, you will receive the Windows 10 final release build and remain activated," but just today they retracted the 'remain activated' statement.

This is why I would recommend a clean ISO install from a bootable DVD / USB stick.
MS will no longer know your version was non genuine.
But, if you want to risk it with your current build...maybe you'll get lucky, I'm just not sure.
after we all download it for ( free ) they will come out with a windows cash shop and make windows 10 P2W.
There is already an app store in Windows 8. It is now also in Windows 10.
The difference being that the Windows 10 app store nor apps force full screen on you anymore. Which is a good improvement.
If you haven't figured it out yet, this makes Microsoft money.
(which is why Valve was like: "I dun like Windows 8..blaaaaaaah...", it is a comptetitor to steam, buying games or apps will be second nature in Windows, it will all be done from a curated environment, and generally people prefer that)
Well... I am more looking forward to all the cases of corrupt data that will happen when a few million users abuse their less then stable systems to this...
It.. Will.. Be... Glorious.
Especially as i do not wortk for Microsoft tech support. May the mother have mercy on their souls.
There was an article early in the year that talked about Windows 10 and Microsoft's future plans. It stated that #10 would be the last numbered version and they were already working on the next version and gave a name for it (which I can't remember, nor am I going to try and find the article as it was a link off off a link from the Yahoo main page.).
Thrust of the article was Window 10 users would automatically be upgraded to the next version when it came out. That Microsoft's plan to stop supporting older copies was this auto upgrade system. That and the fact I like my Vista setup and see no good reason to screw with my (granted - older) computer system turned me off to the idea. I know if I ever do buy a new computer I'll end up with whatever the latest flavor is, but until then ....... I'm sticking to Vista. Known quanity, runs the game's I play, not really any reason to change free or not.
Can you get windows 10 for free if you have a pirated version of windows 8 ?
Remove the pirated Win8,install the win 10 preview, and then you'll have win10 for free when they launch the OS.
This is what I would recommend also.
However from the sound of it, as of today, that may not be the case. They retracted the part where they said you would be able to upgrade from a preview build and keep it.

yes, following the news
there has no been no official confirmation why the edit happened
personally I don't think they will do it, because it's been reported by hundreds of sites that the preview will remain active, if they go back on that statement, lots of people will have lost their XP / Vista install for nothing
YOU ARE WRONG< IT IS ONLY FREE FOR THE FIRST YEAR THEN THE SUBSCRIPTION MODEL THAT THEY ARE GOING TO WILL KICK IN< GET YOUR SHIT STRAIGHT
Wrong there is no subscription after the first year for the base OS. It is free forever.
Microsoft are increasingly shifting towards a subscription service for its products, Office 365 is a good example, and while Win 10 is free for the first year, after the first year, it would be very easy to include a subscription fee, for things like, updates, updates can of course include security updates to the operating system, afaik there has not been any statements made that would contradict this.

"Microsoft's Terry Myerson clarified that Windows 10 users will still get free updates and support for the lifetime of the OS, exactly like past versions of Windows (like XP and Windows 7's Service Packs, for example). There's no subscription model for updates or support or continuing to use the OS.
I asked Myerson for clarification after the presentation, and he confirmed that there will be no additional fees attached to Windows 10, whenever you buy it."
Microsoft is moving towards F2P with their OS. Lest see how the cash shop works and what restrictions they come up with for those who dont pay. IMO buying windows is more consumer friendly, you buy it and get everything with it.
Microsoft is trying to prove a point here. You dont have to play a free mmo to be milked. Whales gonna love this!
On a serious note, Linux is free and doesnt restrict content to an app store, we will see when W10 launches if its worth the upgrade from 7.

They're not trying to prove anything. Apps are already their main source of income these days, OS sales hardly even register on their revenue anymore.

All end game gear will be bought with money.
Also they will have "insta kill 1 button pots" where you use them and
all noobs(non cash shop users) around you die.
Hmmm I'd better not continue.
I'm giving ideas to Trion for AA.

The NSA depends less on the OS you use, but more on the data cable you use.
If you want to be shielded from the NSA, you do what most companies do, use an air wall network.
The NSA can penetrate any OS, what they can't penetrate are air wall networks, unless you have a rat in your company.

I will have to pass on my OS being a SaaS. As a windows user this has pushed me into looking at various linux distros.
I agree that it's infrastructure these days. It's just a fun thing to say.
Aren't they just sniffing packets during a man-in-the-middle attack? Technically, it's still an attack, right? Even though it's for our "safety"?
