This is just FYI, as OSs will still be needed for the following.
Eventually, desktops are going to be replaced by VDI and thin client devices. The only thing holding this up is that this is not yet cost effective for smaller businesses (or less than 300 employees) to migrate to. Even renting server space.
But when costs do come down. Desktops in the business environment are gone and so are the desktop support jobs.
Why? Well, VDI replaces the need for a PC. If a thin client goes out, it's cheaper to just throw it away and hook up a new one, than to pay someone to fix or maintain it. Each enduser that logs in, the server creates a new image for that session. That troublesome, old lady clicking on settings and getting error messages just has to log out and back in.
Most on-site infrastructure will have to be upgraded for this. They will require little configurations, most will be default.
So, no desktops. No servers (on-site). No configs on infrastructure. I'm sure there will be exceptions. I have no idea why anyone would get into IT at this point. I just need to finish the next 10 years strong. Hopefully by then, I can still sell my business. Oh, and there is NO way I'll start doing residential.

Sepends on the size of the company, whether they outsource e.g. CSC etc. and so forth but "advantages" like not having to "train" staff are under threat; HD TVs - the new monitors - at a lower price point are increasingly replacing monitors, could replace "dumb PCs" and they have an OS built in, hot desking with tablets ... huge list of threats.
People should remember that Android is an operating system. Its sort of free as well - the cost is buried in the cost of the phone or tablet.
We used to pay for search engines. Later they were offered via ISPs. This may surprise some people. Then this start up called Google released a FREE search engine ...... and, with minor hold outs, other search engine companies went the way of the dinosaurs.
So - as many have said - free doesn't mean: make no money. This is MS's play to stop Windows being wiped out. As a poster above said MS are hoping for one OS to rule the world. (I think they will need to get it onto TVs - TV manufacturers having turned down Google having seen what's happened in the phone market.)
And just to be clear the upgrade is free for 12 months; there is no subsequent charge for using Windows 10.
For anyone thinking about not upgrading I would also suggest they think about it before the year is up. MS will feel no obligation to carry on providing security fixes after the year is out - they have offered people free upgrades after all. Support will stop.

It will force windows update if you like it or not and no CUSTOMIZATION you have no say in this at all(ONLY BUSINESS ENTERPRISE).
Plus constant data stream MS wants to spy on you what you do with your system collecting data.
Windows 10 is one big brother spy software. shame i hoped for DX12 but now i won´t and won't upgrade neather anymore because of this WAY TO GO FUCKING MS.

All things to consider, as well as how soon you figure your current pc will need to be replaced. I tend to burn mine out within 3 yrs and this one is now about 2 yrs old, no point in upgrading to something that from everything I've read on MS's faqs and other sites there is no guarantee it will even be compatible with my system, let alone the programs/games I use. I will therefore wait until I need a new pc, I'm pretty sure I won't be able to find anything without it pre-installed by then.
I did the preview and it looked pretty good but had several issues still. My major concern was that my Antivirus wasn't supporting it yet so I'm going to wait. I loved the idea of having a built in video recorder which I did try on GW2.
I never tried Windows 8 so I can't compare, but I will be switching when Microsoft and Avast work out some issues.
