    I don't get it.

Your posting on this site - which is loaded with targeted advertising and cookies. It's probably "spying" on you more than Windows 10 ever would.

But you have no problem with that, obviously.

Your paranoia is ridiculous.  The problem Microsoft is trying to solve is this:

    1)  Someone finds a security hole in Windows and tells Microsoft.

    2)  Microsoft issues a security patch to fix the hole.

    3)  A year later, someone writes malware to exploit the hole.

    4)  Lots of people get infected with malware because they didn't install the security patch.

    5)  People blame Microsoft and say Windows is insecure and doesn't work and is laden with malware.

The forum thread is worrying that Microsoft will push driver updates on people who don't want them.  But driver updates virtually never even get offered via Windows Update.  It's plausible that at some point, Microsoft will push driver updates that fix critical security holes.  But that will be unusual.

I'd be extremely shocked if Microsoft makes people update drivers for the sake of updating drivers whenever a new driver update is ready.  Give Microsoft a little more credit.  They're not that stupid.  Microsoft is very, very good at getting a bunch of different hardware and software from a bunch of different vendors to play nicely together.  That's the primary reason Windows became the dominant OS.  Automatic driver updates would kill that entirely.

I signed up for Windows 10 on Windows 7 and prior to it releasing they released some kind of patch or update for Windows 10 "prior" to it even launching or being installed on my Windows 7 PC....it locked my computer down and deleted some startup files and I could not even access safe mode, I was screwed, luckily i had my backup discs created prior to this and was able to recover the deleted files. Again....this is before any type of prompt to install Windows 10 at all, so be careful with signing up on a Windows 7 PC for the early access program as it will start installing Windows 10 updates prior to it even being installed and could bork your current Windows 7 like it did to me.

MS has been spying on us for a long time now. Im sure these new measures will do just what Quizzical explained, along with more spying.

    Nothing else will change.

I dont know how their spying stuff work, but if they can watch my content without paying for it then i expect to not be blamed when i get free stuff from the internet too. image

    Nod.

Facebook and Google actually make money from Spying on people. Their whole business model revolves around data collection and targeted advertising.

Microsoft and Apple, not so much. Their main income are services that don't revolve around personal data.

These type posts are always good for a chuckle.

But seriously all,  with all the people that are so paranoid of MS, do you really expect MS to get away with anything for long if they truly do ever try to spy?

I can think of nothing that would do more harm to their brand and market share than to really be caught trying to spy on us like some people think.

At the moment I have 4 driver updates that Microsoft Update would install on my Windows 7 computer if I'd let it.

There are serveral Linux distributions that collect personal data, and many of the browser add-ons and software isn't signed and checked on Linux, they tend to be full of data mining features.

The difference with Microsoft is that Microsoft has far less incentive to data mine, since that's not where their revenue comes from.

People care, there just aren't any alternatives to Windows  and MacOS that guarantee you data is safer.

Linux is far from safe, and many distributions have built in data mining to generate ad revenue.

ChromeOS is form Google, who built its whole software company on targeted ads and collection of data..need I say more.

The best thing you can do to protect your privacy online.

-never use your real name online

-change IP addresses by turning off your modem at night once in a while

-use an ad blocker and turn off white lists

-don't use facebook / twittter and don't post your information online

-avoid Wi-Fi if you can choose ethernet

    -don't use flash

    -patch your software and OS

    The Bad News

Unfortunately there is a flipside to this happy picture and it returns to the notion of a complete loss of control.

Windows 10’s forced automatic updates don’t simply cover security patches, they cover anything and everything Microsoft wants to put on your PC as part of Windows 10. This can range from new software and services to changes to core features and functionality.

For example: if Microsoft wants to build a new media player, RSS reader, mapping software, cookbook, boomerang or nuclear submarine into the core of Windows 10 it can and you have to install it. If an update also changes how a feature or service operates to a way you dislike (say a new user interface), then tough you have to accept that as well.
Another relevant example is Microsoft pushed adware as an update to Windows 7 and Windows 8 which created a pop-up advising users to upgrade to Windows 10 (image above). This irritated enough users that hacks appeared around the web explaining how to remove that particular update. That wouldn’t be possible in Windows 10.

Or would it? Technically it is possible, even likely, that users will come up with hacks to remove or stop a particular disliked Windows 10 update from installing. But what would be the consequences of this?

    A fundamental loss of freedom.

With the people I know logging every network connection for any unexplained or unwanted packet, both on the computer itself and from the router, they'd know if Microsoft were doing some kind of spying. If they ever found that happening, all hell would break loose from their ranting.

It can be good to have a canary around, just not so good to be that canary. ;)

As the saying goes, if you're not paying for a product, then you are the product.  Microsoft makes money primarily from people buying Windows and Office licenses.

Unfortunately, Facebook has demonstrated that a lot of people don't care about their privacy at all, and that there is a lot of money to be made by abusing their private information.  Some other companies may data mine your actions, but few will post your private information open for all the world to see the way Facebook does--likely eventually regardless of how you initially set your privacy information and likely even if you delete it.

If you care about your privacy, the first thing you need to do is to get off of Facebook.  If Facebook lost most of their users over privacy violations, other companies would take it as a cautionary tale and be more careful about your privacy.  But so long as much of the public doesn't care at all about their privacy, plenty of companies are going to try to make money off of such people.

Do some of you even know what FORCED mean i wonder?

It's forced you have NO CHOICE anymore.

You like it or not MS gonne force any update needed.

    Security fine i understand.

But my drivers for my hardware i deside what or what not not MS no discussion.

Also spying in windows 10 will worse ever, mark my words this will become a HUGE PROBLEM.

Say masses don't care so accept is stupid as some here say.

I won't upgrade and give up my key for windows10 unless proven it's not forced and spying.

Arguement you don't have to use windows 10 is dumb it's only windows you can game with no prblems on all games, other options are bad options.

Sure you can say your not force to use windows but alternatives are slim and worse.

This complete NEW SPY ERA in windows TOTAL control even ever KEYSTROKE you do they collect.

This ahs nothing to do with have i something to hide it's about BASIC FREEDOM and PRIVACY.

That many of you just give in is MIND BOGGELING you belong to the easy avarage joe's group that just eat what they served you and never ask if its ok lol

Future will tell if my paranoia is not valid concern.

I even give up PC and internet nobody tells me or earn money from me without my approval.

To those mentioned google apple and others they are EVEN WORSE then MS up to now maybe i think windows 10 is NIGHTMARE.

Can't believe some agains people like me that question these companies motives and defend them it's very sad to see so many ignorant about this kind of privacy invasions:(

Pretty sure I know what FORCED means.

It's like, in Star Wars, where Darth Vader chokes out that Admiral, using only his ~mind powers~, right?

No one is going to try to take your tinfoil hat away from you. I was going to say how tired I am of hearing these kind of tales, but actually, the more I think about it, the more amusing it is and the more I want to read them.

It's like watching Fox News. Next thing you know, Microsoft will be granting amnesty to illegal aliens, putting your family on the dole, and taking your guns away, so they can ~control~ you.

If computer spying is a new thing to you, you really need to just unplug, move up to a shack off the grid, and keep that tinfoil hat strapped on tight. Anything you do over any telecom medium has, and has been for a very long time, monitored and tracked very closely. The internet more so than most because there's a lot of data they can track.

The issue isn't the loss of privacy - most people will give that up willingly if asked. The issue would be if it's secret. I think, looking at this post, that no one can say Microsoft is doing anything in secret here. As long as you know how/what they are doing, you can chose to opt out - by not using the software, or by unplugging from the internet, or by blocking the reporting port, or any number of ways. MS has been pretty transparent about it, and is continuing to do so.... that is, so long as you believe what they are telling you.

It's a conspiracy...NASA, the CIA, DOD, Homeland, the ASIS, CSIS, MI6, ISI, RAW, FSSRF, DGSE, MOSSAD, MSS, all managed to get secret deals with MS to spy on everyone and find out all your deep dark secrets and they are the ones that backed MS or put them up to windows 10 and thus it's shitty design.

You should be very very afraid, hell you should throw away all electronic devices, all money and sell your identity and then move to some cave no one knows about and live off the land for 20 years. You might be safe after all this time but.....depends have you given blood before do they have your DNA?

Brenics ~ Just to point out I do believe Chris Roberts is going down as the man who cheated backers and took down crowdfunding for gaming.

Call me paranoid if you want but we are still dealing with the fallout of the NSA keeping a database of our cell calls without warrant or due process of law.

There is no way in hell I will ever agree to giving anyone complete and unrestricted access to any aspect of my online or offline life for ANY reason.

There is NOTHING to justify that kind of privacy violation, especially the cheesy ass excuses microsoft offered as explanation.

Screw windows 10, screw Microsoft, and screw the US Government.. You are NOT getting into my home without a warrant and due process of law EVER.

    There are alternatives...
