It is not a question of being a fan but if you played the original Everquest and EQ2 you would understand a little of something we are feeling. I played 6 hours straight and it is dawn now. I have not done this in a long time playing this long crafting and levelling slow because the experience gain is slow.
Not everything is about graphics. I feel sorry that you are unable to appreciate something like this that might be part nostalgia and part joy at an old school MMORPG. If you are unable to get it it's alright you will never be able to I'm afraid.
Good for those who can afford to spend 6 hours a day on video games still. But for rest of us with jobs and families, nostalgia stays where it belongs, in the past when we had no worry in the world and plenty of free time.
The game changes and evolves with its player base, This is server is to appease those who are still stuck in past and can afford to spend hours in front of computers.
I kind of have to agree with this. I tried it just for the isle of refuge. After that i went back to my level 90 character whom i worked really hard on. But what's happened is the other servers seem more empty. And that sucks for the game. People paying money just because of this old start server and saying its the best is strange to me also. I will never give up characters i worked hard on. To me they should just add the old newbie zone as a choice for a start of the game only.
A few things I have done to help in spite of the fact that my computer is relatively new is to turn off anti-aliasing and set my FPS at 50-60. This has really improved it esp the anti-aliasing I was getting that turn lag where you suddenly get a massive drop in FPS when you turn. After I shut off anti-aliasing it stopped.
Check the above thread for some optimization and log off to desktop periodically. I do it every hour or so.
From before when I played at launch I could barely run the game with everything turned to around med and high ,forget ultra and high everything then. Yes their engine sucks and I don't think they managed in all this time to fix it but our computers have gotten way better so now we can run it at high and ultra but I don't push it on some of the settings I keep it down still.
Once the x-packs start getting released onto those servers, will people continue to still group up for content? The further the game progressed with expansions, the less people grouped, because they constantly added new features to make the game more like WOW. (extremely solo friendly, lobbyish dungeon queues, even a crappy bg)
While it may be unfortunate that the other servers are taking a bad hit I think people will go back after awhile especially those who have high level characters on other servers. Those that remain are probably people like me who have not played this game for a long time and like the idea of starting from scratch and slowly slogging my way up as appealing.
You know the most surprising thing is how well written the quests are. I may have unwittingly been exposed to poorly written quests of late in other games but these are well done and the voice overs are really good. I had forgotten about the late Christopher Lee and what a treat it was to listen to him as Lucan D'Lere. But even the other voices the scorn and contempt of the Dark Elves in Neriak come across well. Gorga the cook always made me grin a little. 'No firstees" .This was a well done game and the environment and graphics for an eleven year old are not as bad as you might expect in fact they furniture and details are still good. I personally like the graphics a lot and what I always liked about EQ 2 is how they never stinged on the races. They never slapped on a ear, tail or horns (SWTOR looking at you) but actually changed the body shape of the races completely. Compare the Ratonga,Froglok and Troll for instance to a the Human. The voice overs with sss,rrr and cute pidgeon English made me smile. No siree, this was a good game and still is .
I know that many are annoyed about the money making monkey business DB is up to and how they are milking people but I am willing to let it slide if it let's me play this game for a little longer and the game lasts a little longer. I don't think we are going to see much more of these types of quality writing and painstakingly created maps that even to this day I get lost in(shakes fist at Neriak City of Hate). Just hit 32 on Deathtoll and everything is still going strong as ever.
I still shout out in LFG channel and am able to put a party together for instances within minutes unless its really late it can take a bit longer. I'm constantly in PvP solo and with my group. And I am slowly...SLOWLY working my way towards level cap.
I don't think I can promote SLOWLY enough. This is taking me back to the day where getting a level or 2 a day was one hell of an achievement at the mid game, and required it to pretty much be a Saturday that you could blow on the computer. (A Saturday without kids even >.> lol).
For those of you whom are new to this, I feel they HAVE helped wean newer players in. Vitality, (Rested XP), currently gives around 500% xp rather than the normal 200%. I was somewhat upset at this at first but quickly got over since I play every day and the vitality I earn overnight gets me maybe a quick 20% of my current level, and then I end up back at the gradual rate of xp. But for newer players who are not used to these kind of old school games it's great. If you can only play on the weekend then you will likely have a good level and a half of rested xp saved up come Saturday, letting you grab a quick level with that time that you do have to play.
I saw some people mentioning that not all of us have time like we used to back in the EQ2 and WoW launch days. I can see how that is true for alot of people and feel that they did this to help those players.
Hope you're having as much fun as I am....I am actually kinda regretting my SC ships and preorder GW2 expansion lol. If this stays this fun as expansions start coming out, I might be here through those games :P.
P.S. For those who were asking how long before expansions come out...I am not sure if anyone answered. Players vote every 6 weeks. On a failed vote the server waits another 6 weeks. On 3 consecutive failed votes the server waits 3 months, before returning to 3 more 6 weeks votes.

Yes I know I just said it reminded me of it. I meant the inside cave system. Although if I am not mistaken in Everquest Neriak was completely underground which is why they had to have those eyes that can see in complete darkness. Although the cave opened out to Nektulous . True that Menzoberranzan was completely cut off though. Just that when I first saw Neriak when I created a Dark Elf in Everquest 1 long time ago this was what I imagined it sort of fit with I had pictured in my head and especially with the purple skin of the Dark Elves and the cover of

It's funny how people like you make these generalizations yet it is all just anecdotal. I had a wife, kids, and a job when Ultima Online came out. I never had boatloads of time to play daily 12 hour marathons of MMO's. I did not then and I don't now. But the time I did have to play them back then I cherished 10000000x more than the crap that comes out today.
My guess is you are one of the people who just wants to rush to endgame, which is why you think this way. I really don't give a damn if people on this site don't like old school MMO's, why do you care that I do?
As for the new EQ2 server, It is not for you, it was never meant for people like you.

Yeah i wasn't being smart, yeah EQ1's Dark Elf city was underground. The Dark Elves of forgotten realms have black skin not purple even though illustrators like to lighten it or put a purple shine to it. Look up the description of Drizz.

I don't rush to endgame in any mmo simply because I hate endgame content in every single mmo I have played. It's all boring raiding. Pvp is interesting but gets old quickly. Endgame was boring right from the start of this whole bloody genre, if later mmos never picked up raiding from EQ as their only form of endgame I would be much happier.
Also it is true that EQ was impossible to play casually. That game was designed for basement dwellers. UO, can't say, I played it for a bit and it was way more interesting than EQ. Didn't strike me as a very grind or die game which was good. Surprisingly no mmo picked up that formula though, we sadly got clones of the inferior at the time mmo - EQ.

Don't believe these TLE fanbois. They are both stupid(paying for a DOWNGRADE??? you kind of come across as elitist for telling people that what they like makes them stupid.
And no one is cornering you, you just came out of the gate "not polite and not nice", just dagger in the front.
Yeah, I am thinking of the consequences and signed up and have made a character on the new servers this morning. it's a breath of fresh air so I hope game companies will take notice.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."

Sometimes being rude and direct is the only way to get heard. And I feel like I need to get heard unless we have another "pay to beta test" fiasco again. I don't care about emotions of others as long as further ways of devs to basically scam us are prevented. I am just thinking in a big picture and possibly helping myself(and others ofc!) alongside.
An empty can makes the most noise .. rattle on brother .. while we have fun
What exactly are campaigning against ? Is it against nostalgia clouding people's perceptions and making them pay for an old game that you feel does not deserve it. That the people paying for this old game that is dated and full of old style MMORPG that promotes slow levelling and progress with tough soloing options is in your opinion detrimental somehow to the genre and there will soon be a rush by companies to drag out the corpses of older games and foist them on unsuspecting players. I am sure many gaming companies are right now watching EQ 2 TLE servers and going through their retired stable of games to duplicate this.
That people who enjoy older games are fools and elitist that you must educate at any cost and use harsh language and ridicule to shame them into thinking they are being scammed and taken advantage of. Do you really presume to know what we like ? Are you that arrogant ?
Consumers pay for things they feel are worth it and coming to a thread that is populated by people who are enjoying a game and having fun and calling them stupid and elitist because they do not see eye to eye with you makes me think you're simply jealous and envious that others have found something you are not lucky enough to find. Well you did say you were passionate but you're barking up the wrong tree here.
I just came back to Eq2 after an 11 year hiatus. Apparenly my old character class doesn't exist anymore, so I was able to turn him into a Necro. I am on the crushbone server and looking for a cool guild if anyone is interested in having me. Stinkser is my name in game. Yeah the name is terrible, I was young when I made the toon.

edit: ignore that. It(what I wrote initially) brings shame to Redoran and you are not worth that.
Not sure who you are to judge my worth. I voiced an opinion, if you disagree then disagree and make your case. If you are unable to do that then you should not be on a forum.
If you want to get a bit more out of the graphics, make sure the ambient is as low as it can go on the slider and that you have the personal torch is on. The texture effects don't work without a light source, but when you do have reflective surfaces like shiny armor and some of the more detailed objects, it really stands out when they are active with light. You can especially see the difference in closed-in environments.
The other nice thing about this game was the music. They really went all out with a real orchestra and in places where they use it well, the music adds a lot to the atmosphere. I used to love exploring the Down Below with that Befallen soundtrack back when they had that. Then you got down to the 3rd level and followed the story of the Bayle family through the quests in the Crypt. The lighting and shadows was really nice in that zone, but I think they've removed some of the shadowing options and a few other things.
The engine used to look a lot better than it does now, but they probably made the decision to streamline it rather than fix it because of cost. At one point there was an employee spending their free time upgrading textures and such to shader 3.0, but they moved them to other projects. Too bad!
Aside from the gameplay differences, one thing EQ2 had that most other games lack is an attention to detail and craftsmanship that doesn't really exist anymore. When the game got things right, it really got it right and you were immersed. There has been a sad de-evolution in gaming over the last few years, especially when it comes to sound design and creating the whole soundscape experience.
There is definitely room for different kinds of MMO's, and a market for more difficult and complicated games. It looks like we are about to turn a corner in development and see a renaissance in the near future, as developers start questioning the old paradigm of fast leveling lobby shooter cash shops. Hopefully! In the meantime, we apparently have to put up with a few Luddites who are afraid of change, and screech their rudeness at us because they can't stand the idea that the genre is starting to move past them. The world isn't going to revolve around you forever, kids.
I was playing on SH for a bit and got me to sub again but the recent vitality potion deal turned me off and as someone who has been a SoE/DGC supporter has left a bad taste in my mouth. To sell people on the idea of an "old school" experience and then circumvent that same principal (meaningful leveling) doesn't seem right, especially when there is already a monthly sub to access it. Now there are vitality potions (instant rested xp regeneration) on top of the sub in the marketplace. While these potions are available, the benefits of veteran rewards and /claim items that also help leveling are not allowed on the TLE servers yet.
It's a shame. EQ2 has the most comprehensive list of content and features for an MMO IMO and the idea that they also would offer something most current MMOs don't, a meaningful journey, was fantastic.

I once had a roommate who was always blunt and didn't care about the feelings of others or just "others". He was charged something on some bill and every time he tried to get the charg reversed he would be rude, direct and blunt so that he would assuredly get the person on the other line to feel the gravitas of his point. But instead he got nowhere.
I then offered to make the call and in 4 minutes or so got the charges taken away and got him his refund.
The best way to be heard is to take into account the person(s) you are talking to. You might not always get the results you want but you will actually be heard as opposed to what people do when being talked "at" as opposed to "talked to/with" which is close down.
More on topic, I agree with user547 in that the game does have a great attention to detail that many games don't seem to have these days. I'm going to take his advice on setting the ambient light and see what that does.
Heck, I actually joined a guild and when I catch up to their levels I am looking forward to actually doing "group stuff" which is something, even as a solo player many of the time, I've missed.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
I tried this and it's quite enjoyable especially for me as I haven't played much eq2 so everything is brand new content to me. One hint that's annoying is that the experience gain is very slow and if you're a healer it is just painful. I loved inquisitors when I played them a bit when I tried eq2 but with no AAs this is going to be a pain. It's fun though, I am thinking it will die down pretty quickly though as I can't see people grinding like crazy.

I have played EQ 2 quite a bit in the past but at that point it wasn't super time consuming, it was unite casual friendly. I really liked the variety of stuff you could do. Is this version too hardcore? E.g. Can you play it in short sessions of 30-60 min or do you have to play for like 2-3+ hours cause you constantly need to group?

Parts of Neriak are outside with cave dwellings Menzobrranzan has no sky.
Surprisingly no mmo picked up that formula though, we sadly got clones of the inferior at the time mmo - EQ.

wow you are rude.
you kind of come across as elitist for telling people that what they like makes them stupid.
And no one is cornering you, you just came out of the gate "not polite and not nice", just dagger in the front.
Yeah, I am thinking of the consequences and signed up and have made a character on the new servers this morning. it's a breath of fresh air so I hope game companies will take notice.

An empty can makes the most noise .. rattle on brother .. while we have fun
I am having sooooo much fun right now.
Life is Short, Read a Book.
My laugh of the day was coming out of the crafting hole.
female npc : If you don't try and turn me into a lady,i won't turn you into one either.
male npc:That's a nice pair of boots you have there mate".
I love that funny stuff from npc's.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
