    OMG!!! Someone call the press...quick!

Headline: World of Warcraft down to only 3.5 million more players than every other MMO! The sky is falling!!!
I understand that youy are trying to do damage control on your favorite MMO, but if you have a business that has  for example a 100b/month income, and profit drops 25%, you can bet sh*t hits the fan there.
Although they are still making tons of money. The shareholders and the Board will demand heads being chopped.

doubtful, after all, summer next year, or whenever it is, they know they are going to sell another 10m+ expansion packs for WoW, if its a good enough expac ie. better than WoD, then chances are they could reach a new peak 12m+ active subs, the only question as always, is for how long it will stay at that peak, but even if it fell back to 4.5m subs 3 months later, that would still be a hugely positive result, although honestly, if Legion is half as good as its starting to look, it probably will have a much higher retention rate.

we'll never know as  Blizzard has decided to stop reporting player numbers. IMO they will never hit 10m again, as they would have to triple their numbers which not even WoW can do anymore.
If they show the revenues by game as NCSoft does, I think it can be a good measure whether WoW can or can't recover. But yes, I still believe that if they reach 10M subs again with the expansion, it will be for a short period of time, even shorter than the last time they held 10M.

I haven't played WoW in years so gg on the assumptions, pal.

This entire discussion from all the armchair financial experts is hilarious. What lengths people will go just because of sheer hate for a game. Laughable.
What's "laughable" is that you obviously believe that losing billions of dollars would be ok by the board/shareholders, just because they're still earning a lot.
And no, that's not about hating the game, it's about financial basics.

heh, even at 5.6mil subs, WoW still has more people than 100+ F2P MMO's combined, is still racking in more profits per month than most of the MMO universe combined.   So the way I see it, is more of a praise, after 11 years online WoW still manages to hold 5mil+ Subs.  Blade and Soul won't even hold 5% of that 2 months after release.  I always fail to understand why people keep trying to bash WoW, there's no point in trying since WoW wins on every aspect.  The day WoW 2 releases, is the day we can kiss every other MMO title good bye because WoW 2 will have 50mil+ subs. So in the end, Blizzard-Activision will have the last laugh. :)

Lineage 1 alone had half of WoW revenue in this third quarter. And B&S doesn't need to succeed in west since they make more money than GW2 currently only working in east whereas GW2 works in both east and west markets.

Basically Legion better be good or the film will flop and the game. It's so boring atm, I have never unsubbed since vanilla but still, it's like, get to 100 n then get bored.
Same, I generally level 5 or 6 characters to max level. In WoD I have one. Haven't played in months either. I'll probably get back to it at some point, but definitely not my favourite expansion.

You are comparing WoW to other games using absolute terms as if there were some benchmark of success across the board for the entire genre. WoW's success is relative. What might be hugely successful for one game, would equate to the sky falling for another.

What if WoW needed 4 million more subscribers than the next MMO to be considered successful?

bingo. just wanted to say finally someone that gets it. when companies make a huge amount of money, they start investing in other stuff, so from that point, they have to make sure they keep making the same amount of money. with WoW that can't happen anymore so they are making some f2p games and after a long time we finally are getting a new IP from Blizzard which and it's a shooter based on the cancelled Titan project which is way more cheaper and way more e-sports friendly.

Same goes for leveling, its too easy. There always should be a somehwat challenge but its always so much faceroll that it ISNT fun, same goes for dungeons or LFR.

Remember how leveling was in vanilla, minus the downtime because of being /oom all the time ? Thats how it should be except for the /oom part.

LOL, made it to level 13 in my first day.  Just walked into Stormhold last night.  The game is enormous (obviously) and i cant wait to explore it.  So much of what I like about MMORPG's is just too see "whats around the next corner"...

You mean leveling, fighting 1 quest mob, no problem, then you get agro from a 2nd....Problem! RUN!
    Reset fight and try again.

or die and corpsewalk and try again.
Or being busy completing a quest for 50 mins killing 10 mobs but you're corpse walking 80% of the time because of the ganking.

    I miss that. Reason I don't play WoW:WoD.

Whenever I see ppl doing the WOD version or the Legion beta (On Twitch for example), I see ppl fighting 4-5 or more mobs -above their own level too- and kill them in 10-15 seconds, never going below 95% health themselves.

Elite mob in Vanilla = bring friends, group up.
Elite mob in WOD =  farm them, no damage yourself.

    Where's the challenge??

I miss the old days as well, but people just tell me that it is nostalgia. Yet I've logged hundreds of hours lately on a vanilla private server and I am loving it.

Amazing, I keep reading so many posts that say this very thing, yet the the "nostalgia" factor keeps making regular appearances.

Too bad Blizzard didn't try something truly innovative with MMORPG's and have easy, medium, and hard servers.

I miss the challenge as well. I'd love to level and experience the whole game to 100, Vanilla style

People who talk about challenge, please link your armory so that i can see that you have completed Archimonde Mythic 10 times or more and are complaining about "challenge" from a valid stand point.

Boobs are LIFE, Boobs are LOVE, Boobs are JUSTICE, Boobs are mankind's HOPES and DREAMS. People who complain about boobs have lost their humanity.

Some of us like the leveling game and wish it wasn't such a faceroll. We're not saying that everything in the game is easy.

What has stopped "bigger and better games" from happening before now? Crappy launches, lack of innovation and rushed production is what's wrong with today's MMO's...not WoW.

I find it hard to believe they had 10 million subscribers in 2014.  And 2 years later they are somewhere around 5 million.  Perhaps that 10 mil was because of the expansion year.
