GW Journal

I've decided to start a guild wars journal! I wanna do this so that people who don't have the game or are a bit skeptical about getting it have a sense of what the game is like. I myself am a completly unbiased party doing this to give something to the mmorpg.com community. I have played several mmorpg's such as WoW, FFXI, Ragnarok etc. I'm going to take this journal as far as I can, or at least until I get my first character to level 20. So here it goes:

June 20, 2005: It's 12:10, I just got back from the mall, buying this game. The packaging is really nice and I'm just about to open it. Ok, I'm opening it....omg I have to get my knife and cut the plastic....mmmm I love the smell of new games. Generally its a nice packaging, the quick referance book is small and looks like it could be helpful. Holy crap, the manuscript is such a thick book, I'm gonna read it later, but I'll glance a bit now. It's a whole story in there, I'm gonna get back to that after I play a bit. Ok I'm wasting a lot of time, now I'm going to install it. While it's installing I'm going to check on my food and read the manuscript (note: install started at 12:21). Another thing to remember is don't try to take off the sticker with the CD key, you have to scratch it off (I tried other wise and almost got screwed). My computer doesn't suck but it's slow at installing stuff (it's 12:36 and I'm 93%). OK, a lot just happened in the last 10 minutes. Install finished at 12:38, and then it opened, graphics are amazing btw, and i made my acctount and character, it was very easy. Storyline was great. My character name is Lord Stix, elementalist. Ok well I'm going to end it here, I'll write again in a couple hours when I've played a bit. Until then, hope you enjoyed this, I'm going to go have some fun.

PS: My other entries may not be as detailed because I won't have my internet brower open while I'm playing. But I will however provide key information, or at least what I think is key. This first entry was fun.
::::01::

PS: And also, if you don't enjoy this journal, please don't flame me, I'm doing it because I would have liked something like this before buying a game, and I'm sure other people would as well.

Great! Have fun with this - don't worry about it if you get flames - you'll have at least one interested reader (me). I'm thinking about picking up a copy after I hit 60 in WoW (getting close) - so I'm interesed in reading your thoughts.

June 20, 2005: It is now 3:10, I've been playing this for over two hours. Overall, this game is amazing. The build of the game is perfect, you get a sense of people being around (in towns), but it doesn't feel too crowded because you don't fight in the same areas as other people (except for your party). I was a bit scared I'd feel lonly, but there is a great balance between playing with others and playing alone (and I made a friend). The quests are very original, as there is a point to them, in building on the story. There is little to no lag, and the community isn't THAT bad (I only read the N word once, and I don't think it was addressed to anyone). I finished the pre-searing part (I think) and I stoped right before going to "battle". The leveling isn't that hard. You don't even need to worry about it because you will level from completing quests. There is little to no point of grinding because you should keep your level on par with what part of the game your in. The only real problem I encountered with the game was that the ground started turning white, but I fixed that by changing the video settings, and after that the game ran as smooth as a babies bottom. Overall, I am extremely pleased with this game, and I'll write again soon.

PS: I was joking about screwing them on the warranty dekron.

PS: Cinimatics at the beginning were nice, not many mmorpg (FFXI is the only one I can think of) have that.

There might be many good things I am forgetting to mention about the game, but this is just because there are too many to keep track of. I will also try to mention glitches and such.

June 20, 2005: It's 9:26. I just played GW for a few hours. This time I learned a lot about parties. I finished the pre-searing world and entered the normal one. When you enter the regular world, you get to use NPC characters as party members if you don't have real people to party with. This NPC's are great, the only complaint I have is that the always attack the same monster your attacking. This sucks if your fighting a monster party with a healer and fighter, if you attack the fighter, the healer will be able to heal, but if you attack the healer, the fighter will be able to attack the mages, so it sucks. But, I got over that part. I explored the map a bit, it was pretty fun. The leveling is great! I'm going to go play a bit more now, I'll probably write again tommorow.

PS: All the times I mention are Eastern.

    PS: I'm lvl 6 now.

June 21, 2005: It's 8:50. I played earlier today and then went out, so im writing in my journal now. Today I learned about missions, and I even beat two of them. There are mission-oriented cities which are meant for find a party and entering the mission. It's a great way to gain exp too, I got 1000 xp from each of the two I did. This game has a amazingly huge map, whenever I switch from the world map to my area map, it's like little area is just a dot on the map. I am current trying to look for a guild using mmorpg.com, since I don't trust the guild advertising in-game. I am currently lvl 7, nearing 8. I'm also trying to find some new skills, but I think they are spread out all over the map. I've decided on a pyro (fire based elementalist). I don't think I should have chose monk as a secondary skill because I don't use most of those skills, except for healing when my party needs it. But, I'm just learning from my mistakes. I'll write again soon.

ctrl + double click the monster you want the henchmen to attack and they will stick with that one.

June 21, 2005: It's 10:21. I took a bit of a break to make some tea and decided to update the journal. I did a few quests with a REAL party and have started to get the hang of it. However, several of my parties were disfunctional and I somehow ended being the tank, which sucks. But overall, quests are more fun with real people (what do you call them, I forget the gaming term) that with NPC parties. These quest also have a purpose (you are trying to defend against the char), unlike many other games. You get a great sense of accomplishment as well when you finish a quest (especially a primary quest and one that has cinimatics). Once I get more experienced in the game I might even start a walkthrough, who knows. But until now, I'm loving this game, and summer just started so I'll be playing more often. I'll write again soon.

PS: Thanks for all the feedback!::::01::

PS: Thanks Dekron for the tip!::::02::

June 22, 2005: It's 9:50. I just got to the computer (I'm really sick), and I havn't played yet, but I decided to make this entry about the little things I like and don't like about the game. I will try to update this entry as I discover more things to put in it.

    Likes:
-the hand minimize, restore and close buttons at the top right corner
    -very fast loading
    -map is huge
-mini-map is amazing, such a great help
    -economy is good
    -controls are very easy

    Dislikes:
-NPC henchmen don't level as you level (however, different cities offer different level henchmen)
-some people don't know how to play in a party

I know I have more likes and dislikes, but I can't think of them now.

June 22, 2005: It's 12:50. I just play a few hours, and I have made more realizations about parties; people don't know how to play. I mean, they attack the fighters, when they should be attacking the mages because the fighters just get re-healed. It's commen sense, and I'm surpirsed that many people are missing this. But, it's still a 50/50 chance of getting a good or bad party. I've decided to include a screenshot of my map, to show how far I am, but I don't know how to do that in this forum...I'll edit this entry later and put the picture in when I find out how.

This is exactly why alot of us people who have some common sense and strategy sense, get henchmen instead of real parties, until they are really needed to complete something (basically the later part of the game, but by then, there are more people with common sense). It's also where Guilds come in to play :)

June 22, 2005: It's 11:15. I just finished playing but I'm really sick and tired (not of the game just physically). Today I learned a lot about salvaging. Salvaging is when you use salvage kits to obtain materials from items. There are also expert salvage kits which give you a change of salvaging rarer materials from items. If an item has a prefix or some other sort of mod, using an expert salvage kit would be the best thing to do. I sold a fiery short bow for 300 gold only to find out that it can be salvaged to get a fiery string, which can be worth up 1k. In general, today was fun. The quests just keep getting better. I'm at level 11 now, and I'm looking for a guild. I'll write again soon!

June 23, 2005: It's 12:52. I just played about 3 hours. I started making some money by selling stuff, I had about 4k but then I bought some stuff. Today was really frustrating because it's so hard to find a smart group to do the bonus on The Ruins of Surmia mission. And I can't use henchmen cause they're too low a level and they'll die. Why do people have to be so stupid? But anyways, I joined a guild (Special Killing Unit) with vampire. I've also gotten to the part of the game where henchmen arn't enough to do some quests, so I have to join normal groups. I'm starting to get a lot of good stuff to sell, so I'm looking forward to that. I'll write again soon.

June 23, 2005: It's 8:06. I'm much happier today because of several things. First of all, I got a guild member to help me with the mission bonus I was so mad about. I also advanced to a new area where I can have 6 members in a party, so I can just use henchmen parties through most of my quests. I completed a lot today, but I still have a long way to go. I'm level 13 now, and a happy guy. I'm really getting the hang of this game now, and in light of that, I now consider myself an intermediate player. ::::01:: I'll write again soon.

June 25, 2005: It's 11:45. I just play a few hours. Yesterday I played a few hours as well, but I was busy so I didn't have time to write in the journal (sorry). I think I'm about 1/3 of the way through the game. I reached Lions Arch, very beautiful city. I did some quests, but its getting too hard to do it with NPC parties. I made the ranking of officer in my clan ::::24::, and now I can recruit others (so if your interested, whisper me). I'm level 14 now, but I'm 142 xp away from level 15 (which is very little btw). I've started to collect a lot of valuables, which I will sell soon enough to make some money for our guild hall. Generally, I am very pleased with the game ::::01::! I'll write again soon.

it's basically calling the target. It always works for me. Ctrl + double click.

Let me know if you guys need help. I am usually on at about 9-10pm CST and play until about 1amCST.

Not sure what part I am in, but I just killed Justice Hablion of the White Mantle. That dude was TOUGH! I am a Lvl 18 Blood Necro/Ranger. My in-game name is Dekron VreKasht.

June 27, 2005: It's 9:10. I havn't writen in a long time, sorry. I've been away from home most of this weekend, but I still feel like I've had my "dosage" of guild wars. Well, I think I'm advancing at a pretty good pace. I am now level 16, and maybe a bit over 1/3 through the game. I've gotten a lot of stuff, most of which I will use to support my new ranger. I started a ranger, but decided not to focus on it until I get to level 20 with my Elementalist. My elementalist doesn't use any of it's secondary skills (monk), except for resurection, which will soon be replaced by pheonix. I'm having a lot of fun. The story line is very good. I'll write again soon.

June 28, 2005: It's 7:30. Hmmm... there isn't so much to say anymore. Well, there will be when i start pvping and GvGing. I'm in a very nice part of the game where I can choose to go several ways, which takes me to many new areas. The graphics are really nice in this area as well, it's a sort of desert/jungle place where it changes constantly. The partying is better here because the people are more experienced. I found my first gold (very rare) item today, although it wasn't that good. But, I'm sure I'll find more. I now have around 14k gold and rising. I don't think it takes very long to get to level 20, but then again I have been playing long hours as you can see by my sig. My guild is on its way to getting a guild hall, which I can't wait for since I have never been in a guild hall. We're a small guild, and only about 5 of our members actually play, but we will be recruiting once our leader and officers finish the game. I'm having a lot of fun, I'm actually going to play after I finish writing this. I can't wait to see what areas I will discover next. I'll write again soon.

    Edit: 9:08, and I'm level 18.
