If a replacement comes along then my ship just got duplicated.
Yes, your ship gets duplicated. If you have that "accident" too often in too short amount of time, you will be flagged as a criminal (insurance fraud) ... and lose your ship permanently. Yes, there will be much tears and CS tickets. No, it won't help you. Its like losing 4 Titans in EvE ("Hi Shrike !").
Those that did "buy" expensive ships did NOT buy the ship. They pledged with a higher amount than usual, to help and support the project. But it is not giving them more rights than the other 750.000 captains.

Have fun
I wouldn't call it rights but more along the lines of an advantage. Those that bought the more expensive pledge packages will have access to better ships (better in this case being more suited to hopefully what they would like to do in game in comparison to a starter ship) right off the bat and therefore will always have an advantage over someone who buys the game at release.
First of all there is NO difference in how the ingame insurance company treats LTI (pledge reward) ships and SHI (insured with ingame credits). Has been said again and again the only difference is, one has unlimited time and the other one has time intervals like 6 months, 3 months and such. So you just pay that with the credits you make ingame and are as save with your ship as anyone else. Also insurance cost will be kinda cheap anyway so LTI is not much of a credit saver in game. It´s a nice backer perk but in no way a "magic ship duplicator".
A stolen ship will not be insurable so if you manage to actually board one and become criminal you will face several consequences, UEE might shoot on sight and you´ll most likely be safer in Lawless space with all downsides. You might even lose your UEE citizenship (Speculation) The owner will get his original hull replaced after a waiting period but if he hasn´t taken care of any cargo insurance or module insurance, pretty sure there will be significant credits losses involved. So just arranging your brother stealing your ship hoping it´s an easy way to "duplicate" a ship won´t work that way. Just like in real life you can´t just scam the insurance company and hope nothing happens.
Also keep in mind that transfer of credits works more like in the real world than in an MMO. So if your pirate buddy and you decide to run a scam, he "steals" your ship and then re-sell it for a profit and then you share the moneyz, CIG will be able to see that, tax your transactions, flag both as criminals and deny the insurance claim.
How will this work in details? We do not know. Will the Goons or others try to take advantage of it? Of course, has there EVER been a system in ANY MMO that was NOT taken advantage of? Is that a good justification for NOT having one?
CIG has promised they take griefing and scamming VERY seriously (unlike CCP who actively encourage the practice) and they will tweak and change the system to make it the most hard to fool as possible. Of course we will see if they can pull that one off, someone might even think this is the hardest thing they need to do, not the billions of kilometers maps or making all these multi crew ships, zone within a zone within a zone work in a global network with a million players.

That's what mule accounts are for - laundering currency.

If it can be done in RL, it'll get tried in game as well. Not sure they'd thought this through as deeply as they'd now wished they had. Appears to me that if you only dup your fancy spaceship carefully a few times a year, it'll be okay.
I suspect that as so much of their game descriptions weren't actually tied to existent mechanics, they are making this up as they go along as well. Bet there'll be a lot of changes....and/or unexpected consequences.

Mule account sells stolen ship on the market and also has currency from the stolen cargo. Mule account is used to purchase goods off the AH for Main accounts guild. Main account guild members pay for goods from AH to a different secondary mule account. Secondary mule account pays main account profits from stolen ship and cargo. Rinse and repeat with different account.

CIG will be able to see that mule account one is a criminal as it got profit from a stolen ship, account is flagged as criminal and cannot access lawful places (there is no such a thing as a global auction house in this game, all transactions are local, like EVE), all transactions with mule account 1 are now under investigation by the authorities and flags all other accounts as suspect.
How good it will work? Who knows, but CIG can potentially see everything much clearer than real world authorities can, so there is, technically, no way to escape if they want to go look deep enough.

Yes, you are correct that many of their descriptions were not based on existent mechanics... but then how could it be? You do design document BEFORE having a game, usually and the game is created based on the document and always you will find that something you designed on paper does not work in code, this is completely normal. When you find something that does not work as you hoped it would... you change it.

CCP still have a very hard time tracing these cases. The hard part is proving intent. Whille CCP in theory can police EVE however they see fit, it only takes one weak case to get them into a PR shitstorm, and thus they are very carefull about it and only make examples out of the most clear cut abuse cases.
This will be no different for CIG. The rules as described in this thread are so broken in is not even funny and CIG will need to completely revise this whole design as it will clearly not survive meeting reality.
I don't think the devs have figured this one out yet. I doubt you can permanently destroy/steal items in this game they have bought with real money. Imagine the outrage. The current WoW generation are used to just respawn with all items intact and give it a go without risk. If they did that SC as CCP does with EVE Online this game would just be another niche game as EVE Online is. And I bet the devs want SC to be a mainstream MMO with hundreds of thousands of players. And not being limited to 15k players + 60k alts.
Will be a pity if it is this...otherwise just a fancy mmo for geeks with high end machines..... May look good but tbh will get real boring if there's no real consequences of exploration...you blow up and end up back at a planet or starbase.....
The real money for spaceships has me worried...I love the idea and concept but if its going to be the people with the biggest wallets winning due to been able to afford all the big ships and such so early....then I cannot see this game been a mainstream huge success but more like a space sim for Rich players......
Dont you play already EVE Online why do we need another EVE Online? You dont like the way SC is made to be you can always go back to EVE Online.
