That is surely part of it but 300 persons it a huge number. If they just hired them for the launch they would just have hired them for 3 months from the start.

There is something more here, but I can't say I know what.

You know that 300 number is from June 2014 right? I haven't seen a number for this post-console release CS layoff.
Ah, sorry. Then ignore my post. 50 persons for example would be logical.
It was large enough for PR to react lightning quick.

Chick that was laid off worked on ESO for 2,5 years. And at higher position, not CS grunt.
Chick...... hmmmmm, funny, I don't actually see that name as a Zenimax Online Studios employee. Feel free to link a name here and not something so generalized. Feel free to enlighten us with your personal knowledge of the situation.

Based on what I've seen, the current staff size is actually larger than it was in 2012. Sooooooooooooo, yeah? Feel free to offer up any sort of information you might have.

How much of the console support is stuff ESO has to handle opposed to the console support centers?
  • MagikarpsGhostMagikarpsGhost Member RarePosts: 689
they hired an excess of people for the pc and console launches due to the issues they knew would arise. This allowed them to handle it in a more timely manner. Now that it has died down a bit it is time to cut back on the CS agents, it happened in the call center i worked at for PG&E summer time we got a bunch of people in and once summer is over they are all laid off.

Better worry then. You've got ZoS telling you it's just CS. Protip: It's not just CS.

Ok so ZOS is saying it's CS (just like it was before), and you saying it's not... This is a tough one....

When considering that CS doesn't exist in this game (at least no one has ever answered to my and tickets of my in-game friends) then this news sounds like a saboteur strike.

"Rockville-based Zenimax Media Inc. on Wednesday laid off workers from its Hunt Valley location, according to Maryland state records.

"In all, 25 of Zenimax Media’s employees at 101 Schilling Road lost their jobs in the layoff. The action was described in the records as a mass layoff rather than a closure of the site where Zenimax Online Studios operates.

"The company sent notice of the layoffs on Aug. 14, according to the records.

"Zenimax Media did not respond immediately to a request for comment on Thursday."

It exist and from my experience pretty darn good. I always get an in game response unless I log off. It's pretty much on par with WoWs support which I consider the best in the business.

I thought this was a fairly common practice a few months after release. Not only support but actual developers are no longer needed and let go as well. /shrug

They weren't fired,  they were laid off, big difference. It happens in the business world. Game developing is like being construction. Once the building (or Game in this case) is completed the construction crew is no longer needed. In difference to being in construction vital people are kept on to continue maintanence and add on to the game. The ones that were laid off go off to make a new game or develop new software in another company. Also as comparing to construction they are adding on to the building (adding to game), but most not being kept for the maintanence.

LOL if they were fired they would get severance and unemployment. Laid off is just a way for cheap ass corporations to fire people without paying them what they owe them.

Customer Support layoffs are unfortunately pretty common in the industry. It is not a real surprise to see that they had layoffs after a big launch. This doesn't really mean anything to the long term success of the game since they probably only got laid off due to not needing as much support.

This. As long as things are getting fixed and the game is moving forward and I am having fun, the rest is fodder for talking heads to debate ad nausea. My only regret is for the people who now have to look for a new job. Good luck to them :)

You have it backwards. First, severance depends on the job. Severance packages are usually for management and executives. If they were contract or temp workers then they certainly wouldn't get severance. Second, if you're fired for cause you get no unemployment. If you're laid off or discharged through no fault of your own you are eligible to apply for unemployment benefits, usually one week after the date.

Yup, it started to be common practice, AoC, SWTOR, WS, TSW, ESO....

Though they all had something else in mind, but you have to "adjust" to your performance and revenue.

If you aint going to have game updates every month or two you dont need that many developers.

If you dont have enough people playing you dont need that many CS.

The game is running so smoothly that no one is calling support.

See, the game is doing great! Haters gon hate!

Maybe, and maybe the console version demands less support than the PC version.

But still, it is weird, they are on the console top chart so I don't get why they fire so many people already? Are they saving up cash so they can start on something new? Fallout online? Or do they have some other reason?

If it just was an economical thing the layoffs would come late this autumn. Really strange.
Only in your world are they top of the console charts. The top playing mmo on Xbox one is Never Winter Online and as for PS4 which I have they are not top game.

On the PS4 they are the top mmo but still not top of the console charts. PlayStation live always has them behind games such as Destiny and GTA. https://www.chart-track.co.uk/index.jsp?c=p/software/uk/latest/index_test.jsp&ct=110042
