But I can make time for it for sure.  Even working 2 jobs.  Just like I make time for commercial drawn out sporting events that take 3 hours.  MMORPGs were a genre I would play for hours because the experience would be unique each session.

That is you. I won't make time for MMOs. Some tv shows, yes (one hour a week for the Flash or Green Arrow) but not hours a day for any game, let alone MMOs.

Sure, that is my preference vs yours. The question, important to devs, is how many of me .. are there, and how many of you?

Making the game easier and faster is easy and fast but after you reach a certain points the faster and easier you make the game the shorter time will the average player stay in the game. And throwing in a few hard raids wont solve that.
That is not a problem if the dev can milk the whales fast enough.

f2p games have low retention (80% won't stay beyond 30 days ... see https://www.superdataresearch.com/blog/understanding-mmo-retention/) and that does not prevent lots of f2p games to be made and survive.

So long retention is really not that important .. otherwise no one will make f2p games.

It doesn't mean we don't want to play a game where there is an environment where there is non-casual gameplay.

Speak only for yourself. Given so much other entertainment (and also other stuff like work & family), I only play games casually now.

In fact, it is hard to justify spend 13 hours in a game when the alternative is something like Netflix Dare Devil ... which is much more enjoyable than many games to me. And we are not even get to the part that having a 3 hour date with my wife .. outweighs 3 hours on ANY game.

lol ... she is always looking over my shoulder even if it is not literal. I actually cut 4 hours of work-time to go to shopping and dinner with her on SAT. So if work cannot beat her, games has no hope to do so.

Uhh....  Grandpa. Texting is messaging someone. Like chatting. Also known as communicating. I don't think you understand the word social.

    My thread so my tangents!

Interesting point on 'have we gone too far?'
I don't think so. Despite the hyperbole in the forum,  most games aren't P2w 10 sec max level.

It shows what PvP games are really all about, and no, it's not about more realism and immersion. It's called being in the moment with the people around you... By communicating elsewhere, you are missing part of the event.  Wouldn't expect a young whipper snapper like yourself to understand...

So True. Here's a recent picture taken at some movie premiere. Notice only one person is actually "there".

Hey now, nothing beats watching all the exciting things that happen live right in front of you on a tiny pixelated screen you shove in front of your face.

So i can take pic or video so i can go back whenever i want and share with my friends OR just watch it?  I don't think you understand what socialise is.

To say we socialise less is factually wrong.

I don't know if you could call old WoW truly casual. It was a little grindy.

The highwarlord pvp grind in vanilla wow was the most hardcore I've seen.
    It literally required 24/7 play.

Yes, compared to today's MMORPG.   You had to run all over and sometimes grind mobs at certain points.  You could also realistically die from encounters.

Rofl, I knew many people even back in the everquest days that had kids and still played. They would afk for bit and come back. I know people that play MMO's with their kids. I get the point but you didn't explain how having kids has changed todays games other then saying it's all about money these days. More seems like you are whining you don't have enough time to play games like you want cause you have kids. I don't really feel the kid thing is as big of factor as the OP makes it out to be.
    Good lucks and have fun.

A professional MMO-Gamer knows sacrifice. To become the ultimate pro mmorpg player of top dps you must sacrifice education, work, family and girl/boyfriend/husband/wife. This is hard, but so is hardcore gaming! Most dont have the dedication that is required for such sacrifices that is required for perfection. Arghhhhhh....... I strived for it, met a girl..... You know how it goes...... Not much hardcore Anymore...............hehe.... Still life is better than ever. Bwahahahaha, still got epic gamer comments :)

They changed for the better...if you bitter old vets don't like it go find a new hobby...the crying is getting old.

You are in your 40s and 50s crying about how video games aren't the same when you were in your 20s and 30s?  How on earth do you feel this is normal behavior?

Whining about that things were better before than now is probably one of the most normal reactions in the lifespan of a human beeing. I cant think of anything less normal than not doing it :)

Umm no...a 5 year old crying about a video game could be normal behavior for him...

A 50 year old crying about a video game is NOT normal no matter how you want to spin it.

A normal 50 year old would be...well I guess I need to find a new hobby...or maybe step outside.

First, population growth is at an increase since the time you first introduced yourself to games and MMOs alike.
Second, you are taking static numbers and putting them up on a timeline for comparison, this works for basic stats and maths. BUT, you are talking about an analysis that a simple survey of consensus will not cover, lol.
Third, your constant disapproval of everyone's opinions because they lack a source is laughable at best.
Fourth, the world's a lot bigger than just your screen.

So opinions aren't formed from facts? Or are opinions so deviated from facts/sources that it brings nothing to a discussion? Sorry, I didn't realise we were all creatures born from a cave.

Opinions are simply thoughts on a subject, they have nothing to do with facts. But yes, we're all born from biological caves, that's basically what the womb is.
