Guess what a Titan is worth in EVE Online ? You can buy a car with it in the real world (e-bay is your friend)
And yes, i was one of the people that helped build the first Titan and yes, we gave it to one of our friends. Who promptly lost it. CCP made a monument out of it which i still visit sometimes.
Some people steal Titans. Sell them for real world cash.
When you pledge for a capital ship in SC you are doing something for your organisation. It will be a home. A base of operations. A place were 25 people or more will interact.
No matter what anyone says, it is 38 studios all over again. No one with any management experience at the top and way too many people working on the project. A pure recipe for disaster. Who cares what Derek Smart says, the studio is in serious trouble. The chances of them delivering the final product are slim and none. The money will run out first.
If you threw money at this POS move on, it is gone and you will never see the game you wanted.

Wait Rhode Island tax payers just handed them 75 million?
/it's a joke. I have to point that out cuz apparently some people in this thread don't have a sense of humor.
I consider the Column an interesting piece of writing, although a very subjective one. Here is my (also subjective) opinion about it.
Lets speak about the ships first. Yes, one cannot fly a Caterpillar yet. It is a multi-crew ship. Multi-crew capability will be implemented in the upcoming Arena Commander 2.0 version. Other ships (Constellation, Retaliator) have been chosen to be the first multi-crew ships in the pipeline (as shown in the GamesCom 2015 Multi-Crew ship presentation in Germany).
Furthermore to our knowledge the Caterpillar does not feature in the Squadron 42 solo campaign. All ships used in SQ42 are ranked in the ship pipeline before all other ships because they are needed earlier.
The owner of the Caterpillar got a replacement ship (most likely a Hornet - a single-seater flyable ship for years now) for playtesting just as i got such a ship as a Constellation owner. I also cannot fly my Constellation yet, but i understand and accept the reasons why. Its not like the Caterpillar owner was not able to participate in the Alpha playtesting. With REC in game currency earned via playtesting he could have tried out dozens of other ships and ship variants.
Lets talk about Erin Roberts second. I agree with the author of the column that Erin is a capable leader (as i posted in another thread on the SC forum on mmorpg.com). I personally think that the real potential lies in the combination of Chris + Erin Roberts. Experienced project management in combination with inspired creative vision. And its in my opinion NOT only Chris who is the visionary and NOT only Erin who is the administrator. That why i am also NOT of the opinion that Chris has to go. But yes, as some other reader has put it, from time to time one brother has to hit the other brother with a newspaper over the head when someone is getting carried away in minute details.
Have there been dead ends in the development of certain aspects of SC ? Certainly - like in every other game that is not an exact copy of the previous game like "Assassins Call of Auto 23". Sometimes one has to try new things - sometimes it works out, sometimes not. If it did not work out, you try another approach. Thats normal business, not mismanagement. Its like giants of the gaming industry a la Sid Meier said - you try, you test, you change ... until it works. That takes some time. But if you stick to it ... at some point it works.
Many of the remarks of the author of the column with respect to information he supposedly heard from insiders is hard to verify and because of that i can only treat it as unsubstantiated rumours. None of the people mentioned as having been fired or quit have publically accused CIG. Some people that left had good reasons - like "Wingman" Peterson who saw the chance to be his own boss and create his own artistic vision in the wake of the successful space game revival. And who is still VERY much a supporter of SC.
The author of the column does not like the SC business model. That much is clear. He proposes a different model, concentrating on some parts. I disagree. It is the integrated design concept that IMHO makes Star Citizen unique and special. All the modules working together like cogwheels to produce a masterpiece. Getting all modules working takes time. In my personal opinion as a backer i say "Take all the time needed to create a genre milestone." Better than Wing Commander. Better than Freelancer.
The author also seems to believe early Kickstarter backers are entitled to special treatment. But i suggest to take a step back and get some perspective. Kickstarter brought in 34.397 backers and 2.134.374 $. We are now at 765.777 paying backers with at least one ship and almost 91 million bucks. Is it so hard to feel generous and allow the other 731.380 backers that joined AFTER Kickstarter to also get some of the benefits of supporting this project (like Lifetime insurance) ? In my personal opinion - more power to each and every one of these other 765.776 guys and gals! Be happy with some backer perks, no matter when you joined or how much money you spent - we are all in this together and hope to participate in creating something unique and special.
Should we button up, get ready to cut everything non-essential and get Star Citizen out in time for the X-Mas season ? HELL NO ! In my opinion CIG should take as much time as needed to create a milestone, a masterpiece. Yes, that may take some time and time is precious for the instant gratification crowd. They will manage.
There’s a path forward. It’s risky and they may take some time to get to the finish
line, but I personally think they’ll manage. And at least I am proud to be a part of that project, whatever the outcome.

Just a couple points of clarification.
I actually love crowdfunding in general and make a point to cover as many crowdfunded games as possible, so that's not what I have a problem with. I also love the idea of modular development and covered it quite a lot during the original campaign. But what I don't like, and you're correct, is continuing to monetize on hype through new ships when you haven't delivered on the ones you promised first. And yes, you and I both can walk around our Constellations, but you can't walk around a Caterpillar, because it's not in the hanger yet. Sure, you could fly something else, but you can't fly the ship you bought or even see it in the hangar. I don't think that's fair to the people who bought those ships, sorry if you disagree with that.
Secondly, yes I do believe the early Kickstart backers are entitled to special treatment. Not just because they were on board before the hype-train got under way, but because they were told they'd have special treatment. It's not an arbitrary "we were here first" thing. We were told that Golden Ticket holders would get perks, and that initial campaign backers would also get specific perks. Exclusive access to LTI and specific ships were part of that.
Lastly, folks leaving. I never quoted anyone or said they told me anything. I pointed out that there has been massive turnover in CIG that included nearly all their senior people, which is a fact. I also pointed out that they didn't leave to work on their own project, and they didn't. You may note that I've covered Wingman's game, as well. He most definitely did not leave SC to start it. We met in a coffee shop several weeks later to discuss his idea for a new game, which became DU. Neither Day, nor Mayberry left for another project, which is also a fact. So a very significant number of senior folks leave the project, and few leaving to go to a current project. If you've ever done any program/project management, you know that sort of turn over is a very clear sign of a problem. Not necessarily what the problem is, but a problem exists.
The article is an opinion piece. Based on the above facts, my opinion is that there's a problem here. Having met and knowing a lot of the folks involved, I have an opinion on the best way to solve it. That's all. Maybe I am wrong, but it doesn't make the concern illegitimate. Then, you didn't exactly make rabid attacks, so I'm guessing you just disagree. Not because you're an idea(edit) idiot, but because you have a differing opinion. That's awesome in my book.
In his posts he states he clearly wants to force CR to somehow give up his shares of the company.(won't happen) He also states how he's done this before and has experience in forceful takeovers. I think you're trying to convince yourself that he doesn't want to take it over. He clearly does though. He has an entire blog about it. Let's agree to disagree.
No. You are just wrong. You should try to read what he said objectively and in the context of what was been discussed, without your clear bias. That's the only thing that is clear here.
So I'm wrong, yet DS himself posted in this thread, what his intentions are. Are you blind, or just ignorant? We already got it straight from the horses mouth, you don't need to speak for him.
Can we stop with the fact-less articles. This is not the type of content I would expect from mmorpg.om to be apart of.
You need to have the courage of your convictions. If the article's author is incorrect, nothing will come of it. No need to shut down opinions you don't agree with.
The fate of the game is in CR's hands, it's up to him to deliver or not.
Besides, I enjoyed the article, and clearly my preferences outweigh yours.

By the way. It's funny that you persist in your campaign to lie to people about the number of people/backers.
Specially when you say this: " We are now at 765.777 paying backers" disregarding the fact of some whales buying packages and giving them away for free to other people, since this whole ponzi-like scheme started earlier 2013.
In his defense, he's not precisely lying. Sure, those numbers could be wrong. I'm pretty sure @Erillion knows there are some folks with multiple accounts ( I happened to be one of them until about a month ago ). But you have to have some number for the conversation, and that's as good as any.
I also don't want to say anyone lied about anything. That's not really a fair statement. Things change and new priorities force you to change things. I don't really have a huge problem with that. I just don't think CIG has been as fair to original backers as they should have, and original backers aren't bad people for being a little upset. They're perfectly justified in being irritated at the game having a dramatic change of scope and in feeling like they've been a little taken advantage of. It is very possible for both sides of that point to be true.

1) It's not WAY past the date they said it would be released. They only announced feature freeze earlier this year. The earliest date I saw quoted for the release of SC in the current state was 2016 which came from a SC Wiki (can't look it up right now), but it did have a source attached to it.
The original release date given during its kickstarter was: "Star Citizen will launch in November 2014 for backers, and for the public in 2015." While the kickstarter is no longer available the original release date can be found at the end of this article that discusses the very first delay of the game (the dogfighting module) back in 2013.
I dont know how things work in your reality but in mine, 11 months late with no end in site is way past due.

What people usually say to defend Star Citizen due to that fact it's late is usually is the game is going to be a lot bigger than they previously planned and games often have delayed release, i am sure you will probably get the same response if you get a reply.

Let us make
recommendations to ensure that NASA officials deal in a world of
reality in understanding technological weaknesses and imperfections
well enough to be actively trying to eliminate them. They must live
in reality in comparing the costs and utility of the Shuttle to other
methods of entering space. And they must be realistic in making
contracts, in estimating costs, and the difficulty of the projects.
Only realistic flight schedules should be proposed, schedules that
have a reasonable chance of being met. If in this way the government
would not support them, then so be it. NASA owes it to the citizens
from whom it asks support to be frank, honest, and informative, so
that these citizens can make the wisest decisions for the use of
their limited resources.

Quick check though, are you denying either of those 2 things are true?
Do you not believe the game has grown in scope from it's original vision?
Do you not believe games frequently miss their scheduled deadlines?

I am not sure how things work in your reality, but in mine i would have looked at the official SC homepage and forums once in a while and saw that the community specifically asked for enlarging the scope of the game. And they put their wallets where their mouths are and donated another 89 M$. Furthermore while looking i would have seen the updates on the timeline, changing dates to the 2016/2017 period instead of the initially estimated 2014/2015 for a much smaller initial project. Finally i would have understood that the original Kickstarter timeline was obsolete already by the end of 2012 and quoting it in 2015 would be futile.

It largely depends on the causation of delays, there is some legal grey area regarding the changing of the TOS vs contract law. The defence most backers agreed to works for TOS?EULA does not for contract law. That part has them at loggerheads with no clear precedent as yet.

be simpler than you thought.

They have used a social media campaign so elaborate, a lot of you got suckered into it
GG
Two people agreed to that post. lol
Why would the whole gaming industry want the game to fail i do not know.
The motive would be, because if and when SC becomes a finished game, it will have completely bypassed the standard hierarchy for making a game of it's size. If everyone figures out that all you need to do is have a name, some credible history in the business, and crowdfunding, in order to bypass those big money publishers, everyone would start doing it.
That may be good for the little man, in this case CIG, but it takes potential business from companies like NcSoft, and EA. There are quite a few people I know who work for said big companies, and there's a reason why "crowdfunded" is a hush term among them. I don't blame them for it, it hurts their bottom line, but it's good for gaming overall.
I am not sure how things work in your reality, but in mine i would have looked at the official SC homepage and forums once in a while and saw that the community specifically asked for enlarging the scope of the game. I would point out that very early in the campaign, I specifically asked CR about that very thing. His response to me was that they were "growing wide, as well as deep." He went on to say that the feature-creep concern everyone had was unjustified. That was right before he announced they weren't making their deadline for the DFM because of "netcode."
