I'd rather it be a fun game that I enjoy playing that seeing it fail.

That being said, it needs to release before I'd put money at it. It ~looks~ like it would be a fun game, but I'm not paying money for a pre-release product, nor do I feel particularly comfortable supporting a product with multiple hundred+ dollar buy in options.

And so far it looks like the plan is working .... this month CIG got between 4-5 M$ through crowdfunding.
With a 3 year average of 2,6 M$ per month.

Plans do not pay for your bills...
    Correct.

A 3 year average of 2,6 M$ per month pays the bills.

Like someone else said in another thread they say they have 1 million backers but that hasn't been proven that it's 1 million individuals or people buying multi accounts.
1.033.651 fans of which are 779.839 paying accounts.

779.839 does not translate into 779.839 individuals, that is a given.

I can only give a personal subjective estimate from the Star Citizen backers that i know (which is a few dozen) ... 2/3 have only one account, 1/3 have multiple accounts ... so my guestimate is:

more than half a million individual persons in this crowdfunding campaign.

if SC fails doubt crowdfunding change that much. however the amount of big budget games on crowdfunding sites will be even less. not talking about the likes of Original Sin. those are nothing in budget compared to some big titles. but if SC succeeds chances are we see more big budget titles getting crowdfunded.

then again big budget gaming is slowly dying anyway. these greedy companies keep adding microtransaction to their single player game, cut content and sell as dlc or w/e, lock content and offer as pre-order bonus etc and at some point, most of us will bite once or twice at least. worst of all? it's when developers/publishers screw SP for MP.

    my top MMOs: UO,DAOC,WoW,GW2

most of my posts are just my opinions they are not facts,it is the same for you too.

I have given 6+ alternative funding scenarios in another thread already ... and thats just what i as an amateur could think of. Not that there is any indication that the funding dries up today or tomorrow ... to the contrary.

If this game fails it will take crowd funding with it.

I wonder if they know the exact number of people who have bought multi accounts or if they have a system that just counts the amount of accounts bought.

It would be nice and less deceiving to people who are showing interest in the game if they showed the true number of individuals.

I just have a feeling they aren't being as honest to the backers as some may think.

If memory serves right the usual time those high profile people spent at CIG was 1 year plus. Hardly what i would call "bailed almost immediately".

'Basic Math' tells me that Day's time might skew that average a bit.  Wouldn't you agree?

What thread? Sorry I'm on my phone so looking it up is more of a pain.

I'm not saying it will dry up today or tomorrow but I was agreeing with a previous poster that you don't design your budget around "eventually we will get the money we need"

I would love to see scam citizen be concluded by whacky story about how the guy went off and purchased his own island and created an empire/kingdom.

    I would not.

    Let me see:

    Alex Mayberry .... 1 year 2 months
    James Pugh ...... 1 year 7 months
    Chris Olivia .......  1 year 10 months
    etc.

Not really unusual in the gaming industry.

Again .... Hardly what i would call "bailed almost immediately".....

But feel free to post the names and times of the people that "bailed almost immediately".....
lets say in their trial period (1 month) ... no...lets make that 3 months .... hell, lets make it 6 months ...

Every disappointing game needs a good nickname, if it happens to this one "Scam Citizen" is perfect.

I suspect no matter what they launch there will always be a counter culture to the game.

Actually I would say almost every Indie Dev right now is doing exactly this, planning their design based on predictions of future income from early launches to fund the rest of the games development.

SC has the advantage of being able to predict and count on increasing amounts of money on into the future.

Hmm...sort of like how a good ponzi scheme works now that I think about it.

    >>>A Ponzi scheme is a fraudulent investment operation where the operator, an individual or organization, pays returns to its investors from new capital paid to the operators by new investors, rather than from profit earned by the operator.>>>

Too bad that none of the people participating in SC get any capital paid out by the operators. Which means ... no ... its not a Ponzi Scheme.

Space game genre has had quite a boost in the last years and I don't find the inevitable failure of star citizen will change that prospect. Smaller kickstarters have been and continue to be successful without star citizen.

When speaking if it can be good to see something fail, its an overwhelming yes from me. Publishers constantly try to overreach with the way they sell products, Day 1 DLC, P2W cash shops or just releasing buggy products. If every game that included content in their day 1 dlc would fail we wouldn't have to deal with that shit. If publishers earned more without p2w cash shops there won't be those kinds of cash shops. If publishers lose millions of dollars by releasing buggy products they will spend the extra six months to release a proper version.

What Chris Roberts has done with Star Citizen is something I don't want to continue in other products. I don't want to see more developers selling ships for hundreds or thousands of dollars. I don't want developers to risk customer money and constantly asking for more funds to make the game happen. I want developers to be honest about their development times instead of giving promise after promise after promise on the release date while introducing more ships to buy.

If they hadn't gone batshit crazy with all the money they gathered we would probably have a released game by now.

The game has only been in development just under 3 years. if it was released by now, it probably would have been the most lackluster game on the market and people would have parroted the same shit they've been saying for the past few years "omg this game is half done, nothing changes" or "it needs another year or two in the oven, these devs always rushing shit".

regardless it was the backers who asked for the scope of the game to change so it pretty obvious the date of release would have to change to. Think if people are going to complain they need to keep in mind that fact as well.

So again, the backers asked the scope of the game to change to a much bigger one.

but I agree with the ship selling,  I don't like it, but people can do what they want wit their money tbh

So much incorrect information in this post.

SC has been in development for 4 years, not 3.

The backers never asked for the scope of the game to be changed.  In fact CR said that stretch goals would not effect the release date of the game.

Nope again, backers didn't ask for the scope of the game to change.

One thing everyone should remember about crowdfunding is that it is something people commonly turn to when they cannot secure funding from traditional, savvier sources, such as VC investors and banks.
