So this happened over at reddit and to say the least, it was hilarious! The trustworthy and somewhat naive StarCitizens got taken for a ride and scammed out of a couple of thousands worth of ships.

It would be a sad story if not for the comical events that have taken place and the irony considering these StarCitizens are also giving CIG their money for pictures and promises.

I let the StarCitizens explain what happend:

The Original Thread that started it all (Yes the user is called BettysBigTits which makes the whole thing even more hilarious ):

What respectable mum would call themselves BettyBigTits, that name alone would have me thinking but then again these people are giving some guy cash on hope.

    reddit...what do you expect....lol

BTW the title is rather misleading

Brenics ~ Just to point out I do believe Chris Roberts is going down as the man who cheated backers and took down crowdfunding for gaming.

How is it misleading? That is exactly what happened.

You call them naive but aren't those the kind of people we want as friends?  Someone who would help you out if you needed it?  It makes me cringe when people applaud scamming in any form.  20 years ago this would have caused an outrage but today it is funny.  I'm scared to think of what the internet will be like in another 20 years.

You know very well people will come in this thread expecting it to be another SC is a scam thread...lol thus it's misleading.

"Star Citizens scammed on reddit" would be more accurate.

Well i would agree with you if not for the fact that they gave their ships to an alleged mother with a posting history in erotic forums that calls herself BettysBigTits on an internet forum. I think you can be called "somewhat naive" if you do that.

If this was less obvious i would totally be on your side. I am not applauding scamming, i am sad and disturbed that there are so many people out there that fall for an obvious scam like this one.

It scares me more to think that these people are allowed to drive cars and go outside the house.

This isn't new at all, it happens in pretty much every MMO that has ever existed.

Men give "women" money and items, the more slutty she acts the more men will give her stuff.

Also this title is incredibly misleading, it gives the impression it's a scam from the game creator and not what it actually is.

What i take away from this ... all the people in that thread tried to be super helpful and friendly.
They patiently explained all things around this game.

There's helping you out when needed and then there's this. Red flags should have been going up all over the place for everyone involved.

I have been doing it all wrong i have been acting slutty on the appropriate websites and just been playing the game when i play my games lol, not that i would do anything like this i don't like scammers, i actually remember the first and only time i got scammed in the first online game i played  which was runes of magic, i traded the cash shop stuff i wanted to sell before i got the gold and obviously i never recieved the gold, oh well it only happened once but it was a lesson learnt.

It does not say: "StarCitizens scammed by CIG" so i don't see the problem at all.

If you assume that most people including yourself think it means they got scammed by CIG then that says a lot about CIG.

No it does not. See above.

PS: Just for you two guys i have changed the title. Happy now?

yes very true no lady would go with that name anywhere including internet...if people want to be kind and help others then they must make sure their money goes to people who really need it...considering there are true ladies out there who could use some help and the number of helpers is actually very low particularly in game industry it is critical to stop these trolls in my opinion.

Where's the outrage? Forgive the question, but after months of outrage over the perceived scam that SC is, why is there no outrage over people actually being scammed?

Not really. The general "feel" most seem to try to express is "CIG is scamming people" "Pay 2 Win Ships" with no real merit other than their opinions but want people to feel the same way they do.

So I can see how one would think the title is misleading with how much crap CIG has been getting lately on here.

As for the OP story, hilarious.

I don't think it's misleading. The title doesn't say who did the scamming, but I also don't see any implication of CIG doing the scamming here.

I would assume it's because getting scammed by BettyBigTits is funny and getting scammed by a large company isn't.

Plus if it was her son which it obviously wasn't because this son didn't exist then why couldn't he post on reddit to get the information himself, after all it would of been him playing the game not her, yes it's good that people like to help others i do that games if i am able too.

Yeah, it was pretty funny. I actually love things like this. I also think it's hilarious when people set up fake toy drives (or food drives), collect a bunch of toys and then return them for cash so they can go buy crack. It's really the only reason that I enjoy Christmas at all, lol.

This all doesn't make sense to me. Couldn't they have these so called ships have id's and just taken them away? To be honest sounds like pr  stunt, but I'm overly paranoid. Side note I find it insane amount money people are paying for a digital ship. To each their own. Good lucks, have fun.

Scamming is not cool, period.  If you laugh at a scam, there's probably something wrong with you.  That said, I feel like this one was pretty obvious and should have been avoided.

Yes, CIG could do that.  However, there are gaming companies like CCP (EVE Online) that do not hand out punishment for scamming. They are of the opinion that it is an educational experience. Future will tell how CIG will handle such things.

The average spending per account for Star Citizen is 90 $. Yes, some have spent much more than that - but who knows, maybe for them its a trivial amount. As you said ... to each their own.
