For many, Fallout 4 will be what they hope to replace Skyrim with. For others, it’ll be what they hope builds upon the sheer awesomeness that was Fallout: New Vegas (though it was made by Obsidian).  For me, I was just hoping Fallout 4 could live up to the immense hype that Bethesda themselves have created. Does it?

Sounds pretty good! I don't think I'll pick it up right away though.

So not as good as Witcher 3?
"As good" is hard to quantify. Less polished, but arguably better in some respects. Where Witcher 3 is tops at story-telling, Fallout 4 does the open world sandboxy thing far better in my eyes.

I'd imagine that "as good" or "better" will ultimately be determined by which game setting you prefer the most. I lean toward the "post apocalyptic" more than the traditional medieval settings, because I'm very much a sci-fi fan, and the sword-and-board epics are becoming a little tired by now...

@BillMurphy Thanks! Can't wait to dig into this one soon. Maybe since you had a preview copy, those bugs you talk about have been ironed out, or will be shortly.

I actually think I am one of the few people who could not really get into The Witcher 3. I loved the first one but the second and third one just....eh. Not sure what it is
I can't get into W3 either. I seem to spend a lot of time wandering around trying to find quests that are my level as everything I get is way above me (only in the second zone and as soon as I got there, I'm stuffed for content). I can waste half an hour wandering and dying to mobs, and am probably too low level for the second zone, but then I shouldn't have been able to get there or the quests should ahve leveled me up for it. Either way, I want to get into it but if F4 is as good as I'm hoping, then W3 won't see me again.

Oh, and I must admit that I don't like seeing a review of a game before it's even released as you don't know what changes/fixes have been applied in time for the release, and, in my view, the reviewer cannot possibly have experienced enough to give it a fair crack. I have a feeling it's going to be better than the review suggests.

I was thinking along these same lines yesterday as I was playing witcher 3.

Witcher 3 is great but it is a bit lackluster on the exploring side. Oh sure you discover "events" but as yet I really haven't discoverd any ruins or caves that are worth exploring.

It's sort of like Dragon Age Inquisition in that regard except that it's a lot better than dragon age inquisioin as what you discover is a bit more interesting.

Reviewers have had the game for a couple of weeks. More than enough time to really get into the meat of it.

As to seeing reviews before it releases (for most of us anyway... NZ and Australia actually started playing it before the review embargo was lifted) it's 6 of one, half a dozen of the other. If the reviews come out after, they get criticized for not providing timely info to help with buying decisions... shrug.

W3 really shines in the maturity of what the stories have to say. It's pretty unique in that they seem written for intelligent adults unlike most other games. But yes, with respect to open world exploration, it's not in the same league as Fallout.

Glad you liked it, I refuse to read anything else other than your scores and a few buzzwords from how you scored, but I think it's safe to say you're pretty confident in scoring this game 8.8, I'm looking forward to immersing myself for those hundreds of hours you mentioned in my open world sandboxy game

Will pick this up as soon as i have upgraded my comp... an ild i3 and a 550Ti will not cut the check this time. Sadly that forced me to cancel my Pip-Boy edition... Had to put those money towards a new comp. Still hyped as heck =)

This have been a good conversation

This might have more to do with playstyle and what you expect from the game.

For me and others like me, finding areas that are challenging or even too high is a plus as we usually like to try it anyway and if we can't do it we work so that we can overcome that particular challenge. In short we expect that parts of the world are going to be too hard and it's part of the experience for us. I find this a plus in Witcher 3.

Whereas other players want all encounters to be within a reasonable range. Elder Scrolls games, for the most part allow for this in one way or another.

Fallout (3-4) is open world sandbox RPG with story added.
Witcher 3 is story RPG with open world added.

I think that we will need to wait many years to see a game that tops Witcher 3 in terms of story or even graphics. But its open world sandbox is Bethesda forte. And it will always be what people are looking for in those games.

II understand there is no formal definition of what a sandbox game and a theme-park game is, however, How does open world translate to sandboxy? Oblivion?, FONV? Skyrim? These games aren't sandboxy in anyway that I understand a sandbox to be (Minecraft). The stories are as on rails as they come. Even then, the open world is really an illusion created by multiple distinct but shorter story that are loosely tied together, if at all, that you can drop and pick up when you want.....even then, there are limits. Within each story, you can follow the content on rails, or you can move on to one of the other stories on rails. I was just playing Skyrim yesterday, I had the quest to go talk to the Jarl of Whiterun to trap a dragon. I haven't done that, because I know that I either need to call the truce in the war or complete the war ark. This is not optional. So, I decided to drop the main quest and pick up in the civil war and complete that. Only I can't complete that because the Emperor's cousin is getting married, so I now have to Stop the Civil War Ark, to advance the Dark Brotherhood Ark so that I can get back to the Civil War Ark so that I can get back to the Dragonborn Ark. As I have said before....What If I don't want to be a Werewolf to complete the Companions Ark? What If I think Empire and Ulfric are equally bad for Skyrim and want a different "High King"? You don't have a choice there. Even the main story will stop for dfferent arks atcertain points. The sandboxiest extent Skyrim gets is choosing which predefined wing you want to add to your Hearthfires manor. I can only assume that FO4 will have a similar story structure. And given so, How is this sandboxy?

Witcher 3 story and atmosphere were really great, but the combat was clunky as hell.  Gameplay is pretty big for me.

Fallout 3 had the perfect combination of both in my opinion.  Hopefully this one is similar.
