I agree with ESO. It has become my favorite MMO hands down. The future looks bright as well. Thieves Guild, Dark Brotherhood, Vet/CP changes, PvP bounties for the Justice System.

The battle for best MMO between ESO, GW2, Wildstar, FFXIV and SWTOR. What a list.

The term Truncated or Cherry picked springs to mind, there is also the obvious exclusions to the list too, though i think someone decided to throw a joker into the pack with Wildstar!

I agree ESO should win best MMO of the year, really nothing else out there to compete with it. But it should also win the award for the most bug infested game of the year.

Agreed on ESO getting best MMO of the year! Its a fantastic game and I honestly believe it is the best MMORPG on the market! Nothing even comes close.

Its a good thing that the number of players in a game is not a measure of a games success. Eve Online managed win a number of these awards, despite only having 350k - 500k players. ESO is an equally niche game in that regard, and appears to have a similarly sized playerbase.

Try somewhere about 2 million players. They sold 2 million copies on console alone. As someone who has played the game since launch, the population on PC has never been higher. So many people logging in for this free weekend it's about to break the servers.

Meh, I don't know about that. I think they had somewhere in the neighbourhood of 1 million sales on each of the consoles, the last time I checked. Maybe someone's got a link to some definitive info, but I'd say that ESO numbers are certainly higher than EVE. Where are their subs? Who knows. Maybe that's 350-500k. Even so, that's not a niche. That's better than what should be expected.

Few of those games are never talked about so very odd choices.

Gw2 ..ahem well we figured that one lol.

TESO?Well i can see it's intrigue,i see the sales numbers but that picture says it all for me,NO COLOR everything in the background looks green/grey.I guess someone has to win the award, says to me that 2015 was/is not that great.I bought a few games in 2015 but mostly remakes and the two new games were both complete utter crap,H1Z1 "which i got a refund for" and Skyforge, neither worth playing even if free.

So yeah looks like the worst year for me in the history of buying and finding a game to enjoy. All of my enjoyable purchases were of older and remakes.
I still play and have way more interest playing Age of Empires than anything in 2015.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

Well umm it's not a matter of their staff trying it,it is more of "ok now it is a good game because we got some advertising out of it". however before we considered it crap because they didn't support our site.Just look at Crowfall....seriously most anticipated, lmao good one, nice try.

Not Hating on ESO as I even bought it but I don't find it that good as most on this thread make it sound. A game that was initially a sub game and went to buy to play to me is defenetly a fail game, period.

I agree with the ESO choice. I can't think of a single current mmo that doesn't have a laundry list of woes but ESO offers the most solid "modern" mmorpg elements of any of the current crop I can think of.

Not going into the huge list of issues I could speak of with the game, there is 2 major reasons why this game is becoming extremely solid:

    1. Potential: Everybody over uses this term but I mention it because Zenimax has delivered a couple of dlc's now and Orsinium alone reveals to me these guys are on the right track with their game. Vet levels are finally confirmed to be removed and key dlc's long promised on next up as well. The B2p transition was a long hard wait but it seems their fast development is back in gear. Potential appears to be a promising term because there is evidence to support it.

    2. B2p model still allows solid in game experience: I cannot stress enough how important this is. Swtor is completely ruined by their model for me. Lotro was as well along with Champions Online which are the 3 games that last took up most of my time. I feel I was forcefully ejected from those games by their f2p transition. ESO can be played without ever opening the cash shop. There is virtually no barrier to play without a sub if willing to purchase the dlc's of your choosing. Don't want the more pvp oriented Imperial City? Don't buy it. Want to take one character through the Orsinium story and not bother to do it again? Pay a one month's sub. The b2p model is flexible and not tied to progression. Loot enters the market without barriers (although limits craft choices in some ways but there is plenty of core craft content without dlc's).

What would ruin this game is a f2p transition so I hope they never go that route. Having to at least purchase the core game brings in players with a level of commitment that still provides some sense of community preservation. Social features tend to improve instead of decline despite the odd guild structure I am finding ESO to be a very strong RP destination and there are long standing market guilds still around that are very active.

If Zenimax continues the design philosophy of opening up their game away from the more linear progression they started out with I believe their game will continue as a very solid AAA mmo choice in a landscape where such games are on a decline.

    You stay sassy!

There is a difference between going F2P because you lack the numbers (Wildstar, SWTOR, Rift etc.), and going B2P/P2P hybrid because you want to release a game on the consoles.

If Microsoft would have dropped the Xbox Live sub requirement for ESO (Sony was already prepared to do it), ESO would have been still a subscription based MMO today. Hell it still is, however perfectly disguised. ZOS has made the best out of the given situation.

Yes they are removing vet levels, problem is they said that 2 years ago, or at least getting close to it. After this long you would expect the vet levels to already be gone. Also saying it is a solid game, all I can say once they fix a lot of the bugs and other issues (from beta) with the game then yes it will be solid. But 2 years, they should of already been gone.

Might want to include the games on this list and take out Eve and SWTOR.

Lots of people chose other and I'm thinking that EQ2 might have sucked a few of those. IDK what else deserved to be on the list.
Are you onto something or just on something?

Wildstar - Best combat and raids I have seen in an MMO yet. Add in the dynamic housing, the changes over the past year, and the vast amount of potential. If Carbine can play their cards right I see it being a huge contender in the future.
  • KopogeroKopogero Member UncommonPosts: 1,685
Truth is none of these games in the article will be around, more importantly anyone talking to in late 2016 and there is a good reason why.

Crowfall has a lot going for it. At least on pen and paper. So i can see how it can be most anticipated. But I would not be surprised if there was some favoritism in the mix with ESO.

I agree with most of the votes, except for calling Overwatch a MOBA and the GW2 getting MMORPG expansion of the year. I'm one of those who uninstalled after playing Heart of Thorns due to the game doing a complete 180 on me and having the nerve to charge a full game price as well. Other than that though, ESO is surprisingly a very good game I'm just needing to get through this pile of single player games that have blown the doors off the year for me in the last 2 months before I head back into it more. Fallout 4, Witcher 3, Star Wars Battlefront, Just Cause 3 and Far Cry 4 are what I'm playing at the moment(having a hard time deciding which to focus on more, lol) but this is a good thing, it gives me a breather from MMOs for awhile, lets me enjoy other game designs and gets me nice and ready for next year to come back to ESO and WoW: Legion.

Overwatch a MOBA though?  I really can't see why we're calling it that...

wouldn't chronicles of elryia most anticipated for 2016 or are they going off of someone elses hype level. Hype = anticipated? doesn't it?
