The cheaper VR the experience it's not true VR to get a idea how really VR the experience if they games or the program well made for it is just leaps ahead.
I think I'm going to hold out until the HTC Vive (SteamVR) announces their release price before making any half grand decisions.
its not a bad plan. I think the big challenge coming up in the future is standard. If i have a Vive can I play oculus games? and vice versa and same for other devices that will likely come
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.
For VR to take off there has to be a 'killer app', I have not heard anyone who has a clear idea of what that might be.
But the thing is VR isn't just for gaming. There are a lot of different uses for it. Far beyond the scope of visitors to an MMORPG forum board. I think that's important to remember.
LOL ... and the killer app is? Just saying it is not just for gaming does not answer that question.

for now the killer app is EVE: Valkrie but it might end up being ADR1FT and one might argue its Elite Dangerous however that said the deployment of this device is different from the deployment of consoles which typically depend on the game for the interests. for VR its VR itself that is the main focus of interest.
My question for you is how can we know what the killer app is for a new device unless Microsoft or Sony tells us its a killer app? if we havent played it
I am 99% confident that within a year you will get a clear answer to that question
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.
Now you're just spouting random whiteknight stuff. Please, comparing consoles where millions are produced to Rift's limited initial production is ridiculous. It's Riftdiculous even.
I already posted a link showing how many games both PS4 and XB1 launched with. There were more than six. Where is your link to the "176" game list for Rift? Outside of early adopters people aren't going to buy the thing for 176 unannounced titles.
I already showed with the Ouya reference why hundreds of games no one wants to play is a non-starter. I never said Rift has no games. I said there are no games people are clamoring for. I have asked for a list of games that will draw in the masses and I got to non-starters.
My point is they need to get past niche appeal or it will never see widespread adoption. Right now the price is too high for that. That is why they need a killer app.
all of that because I missed the count my a few numbers? 6 vs 176
16 vs 176
really a difference? really? seriously?
nevermind that pre-order for Oculus sold out in a few hours. Has consoles EVER done that?

I am 99% confident too, and that clear answer will be there is no 'killer app'.
As for EVE: Valkyrie, flight sims have been around for a long time. So have 'space' based ones suggesting that this VR incarnation is the 'killer app' is ridiculous, Valkyrie may sell well but I expect that a lot of players will not be using VR to play it.
Someone should make a table graph listing all the known games that will be supported by the Rift and Vive separately, and also have a tally that marks what games in the list are built from the ground up specifically for VR.
nevermind that pre-order for Oculus sold out in a few hours. Has consoles EVER done that?
Well that all depends how you look at it, if they only had 5 units to sell... well duh! But if you're talking 5 million units sold in a few hours, that's another thing.

I don't have this info, or I would.
There are games that are out like Elite Dangerous VR but not killer games that would make people run out get a VR headset. Other then gaming I think it would be very useful.
I'm going to wait on the feedback for Playstation VR. Reports on pricing have stated it will be around the same price as the PS4. Sony also have some interesting games coming out for it.
Edit: embedding went wrong
For the price of the Oculus you can get a PS4 and 6 games.
An accessory should not cost $600.
I payed something like that for my nice 27" screen 2 years ago...You could of course use a small screen for $125 with crappy resolution but I needed a new screen I thought it was worth it for a large screen with good resolution since Im a gamer and watch series on it as well.
You might not think an accessory should cost $600 but it is worth it at least for some of us. The million dollar question is how good the Occulus really is and how long it holds up before it breaks. If it is good and last for 3 years or more I don't see a problem, I spend sums like that on a new GFX card every 3 years anyways.
Now, there are other cool stuff you could get for the money (like this) but if I get to choose between VR for my PC or a PS4 with 6 games I rather go for VR. You are free to prioritize in a different way.

I dont agree with that Elite Dangerous is a very very very good game.
Want to know what I think? I think what you are thinking as 'people will run out and get' really is 'hasnt been PR hyped out the wazzo both offically and covertly'
basically 'generating desire via marketing' yes..there isnt a lot of that around VR games. namely because the big companies that typically do market the ____ out of everything are not in the VR space

I think a HUGE part of all this confidence issue is behind marketing.
Many gamers (mostly the younger ones) interpert what they see as hype as actual gamer interest but what they dont know is that much of that hype is paid for. Thus when Microsoft effectively TELLS the koolaid drinkers that people want this game then they want it.
I say this because people keep saying no killer app but Elite Dangerous now that I think on it is pretty much better than most AAA games without VR, let alone VR so if you want a killer app there it is. You just will not have Microsoft telling you that it is

back on topic somewhat I think you would be pooping your pants if instead of Oculus it was sony morpheus
I think VR will fail across the board. 3D glasses failed and they were far cheaper and far less intrusive.
Really not the same experience in any way, shape, or form. If the 3D glasses made you feel as if you were there in the movie with a 360 degree experience I guaran-f'ing-tee you it would not have failed.
If gaming VR fails it will be because of the price that makes it inaccessible to a majority of gamers. I can afford it and I refuse to pay $600 for one piece of a gaming machine. Would not even pay that much for a gpu or cpu, certainly not paying that much for a peripheral.

Irrelevant. No doubt for some of you it is worth $1000, $5000, $10,000. That doesn't mean the price is right. Hell, there are gamers paying tens of thousands on ships for Star Citizen, it is worth it to them too. Doesn't mean it is a good value.

Brenics ~ Just to point out I do believe Chris Roberts is going down as the man who cheated backers and took down crowdfunding for gaming.
VR may be used for:
- May be used for Virtual Travel, but do you really think that is in the 'every home must have one' category? Or is it just a low level possibility.
- Patient Care, really? How is VR so much better than Skype or just a visit from a Health Care professional?
- Classrooms? Oh come on now.
and on and on, at best the applications are incrementally better than current methods at worst they are just plain silly. So come on who do you really think will be the first million VR headsets and what for?
