The MMO genre can sometimes feel like a whimsical sea of shifting sands, but it’s not without its axioms. Open betas will almost always mean soft launches, game development benchmarks will take longer than expected, and Vanguard: Saga of Heroes will always be one of the best-conceived and poorly-executed MMORPGs ever made. Yet, sometimes the sands shift enough to reveal patterns for those who are good enough at predictions to get a glimpse of what awaits for MMOs, RPGS, and other games.

is in real life too. You want to hug him, and crush him because of it.

The future of the MMO is on consoles, not in Eastern imports or half-baked indies and last-ditch efforts in the West.
ESO and FFXIV will continue to be the best two PC MMOs, and millions will flock back to WoW for Legion, and promptly leave again after a month or two like always.
So, in short, nothing really changes.
Right, keep the hype machine going. Only to again find empty servers 4-6month after release -except for the hordes of bots.
"EverQuest Next Will Go into Closed Beta, Announce Launch Date"
That would be nice, but i doubt it. And i don't know anyone who still cares to be honest. But then, i also don't have any friends who could tell me about that.
"Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen Will Make Me Want to Play Vanguard"
Me too! But where there is McQuaid involved, there are a million ways to fail included.
"Shroud of the Avatar Will Test the Boundaries of Old School, High Concept MMO Design"
Bored multimillionaire spacetraveller asks people to fund his new game. They better hurry up, because everyone who still knows about Lord British, Ultima etc. will soon be too old to hold a mouse. The rest is buzz and nostalgia. Don't care.
"Guild Wars 2 Will Announce and Deliver Post-Heart of Thorns Living World Content"
That's a bold prediction! A successful game with active development will see more content!
You surely didn't buy the cheapest crystal ball there!
The Division is my most anticipated game for 2016. Destiny 2 is meh for me. (Too many squeakers).
But my enthusiasm for The Division is guarded after Ubi's wildly disappointing The Crew.
You were awfully nice about all this.
We need more nice on the internet.
I think people have to accept that the "traditional" AAA MMO is pretty dead in the west. By dead I do not mean that there are no games to play, there are a couple of big ones that are still well played and loved (ESO, WoW, SWTOR, GW2) and there will always be some movement from the East (FFXIV, BDO, etc.)
But by dead I mean that you will not see another big new AAA MMO from a Western developer.
The closest we will get is games in varying genres (including RPG and FPS especially) that are very MMO-like, that feature "always on" and semi-persistent worlds and many of the "traditional" MMO features, but that focus more on story and gameplay and competitive multiplayer etc. just like Destiny & The Division.
The Eastern markets seem far more accepting of B2P and F2P/Freemium etc. games, so you still see a LOT of new "AAA" MMOs coming out of the East like BDO, B&S, L3, DDO, etc.

He makes people laugh, in my book - that's nice <3

Aside from the GW2 line, which says nothing of substance and only seems to be there to mention the game, I don't see any rational or logical reason for any of this. It all just looks like wishful thinking and fanboy hype that this site is always pushing. There are no facts or research to back any of it up and it really just looks like a fluff piece for the sake of advertising games that need exposure.
/facepalm
Yes, it has been quiet. They have posted some concept art but that's about it.
Microsoft did release a list of games confirmed for 2016 and Sea Of Thieves is one of them.

No MMO's looking like anything i would like. A bleak year ahead for me on the MMO front i am afraid:)
No major publisher will announce nor release any new 'MMORPG'. There will be plenty of online only games or game modes, but nothing attempting to emulate the traditional 'MMORPG' (due to publishers realizing it's futile to gamble with tens of millions in such an entrenched and over-saturated genre).
ESO will likely be the GOTY for 2016 if it keeps up the current pace. As it keeps improving, its playerbase should also steadily increase.

Way to be a negative nancy. If all of these predictions are bad, do you have some of your own?
Edit: another one here. At the end of 2016 we will again be saying that 2017 will hopefully be a better year for mmorpgs.
Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen Will Make Me Want to Play Vanguard
Is Som Pourfarzaneh stating that Pantheon will be so bad, that playing Vanguard would be an improvement?
The Division and Destiny 2 will be the best "MMOs" of 2016.

Well you read my mind except for Destiny.I am so looking forward to playing Dishonored 2 and Division.
I look forward to hearing and seeing more from COE and i have a small but mild hope for Pantheon.
Garriots game i have zero hope for, when i see cash shop prices that over the top steep,i know the guy is just doing this to make money with no passion for the game.Although to be honest i have liked a few concepts in Garriot's game but i just don't like his presentation.
Maybe if i had a plate of wings and some pizza i might think differently about Garriot's game,he should pay me 2500 bucks to party with me.ill even design him a house for the game way better than anything they have in game.

Many people purchase Legion and sub for 1-3 months, before leaving WoW and going back to the forums for forum PvP with the rest of us miserable SoBs.
I'll continue playing Trove because it's oddly addicting and fun. While still complaining in the forums.
