because VR is an actual retail device you can buy now.
What you showed is a tech demo of a concept product similar to how the first Microsoft Surface product was presented and never went anywhere retail
Surface never went anywhere? IT WENT EVERYWHERE! The problem with the table version they were displaying and was used to demo table top D&D is that it cost $34,000. But we have the tablets, phones, and IoT devices that use this technology. There are some companies that have used the larger versions in their retail displays and on TV.

Microsoft Surface went nowhere.
The technology that worked that you are refering to works completely different.

Correction - VR Is a device you can "pre-order" now.
and what does that make Hololense?
just a pipedream filled with concepts that dont work in real life?
Sorry but again you need correction. Hololens DO exist as a working prototype. You can find several review online form people who have tried them
there was a 'working prototype' of Microsoft Surface as well.
I am not sure I understand why you guys think this is such a secure thing they are making here. It really bizzare coming from a group who doubts the near future success of a product that is about to hit retail, continues to sell out, does have retail that sells out, has tons of major companies behind it throwing money it like candy but no...this prototype is clearly the boom. No massive missing holes in this thing.
Besides, i dont watch sports so I have not a Fing clue why I would want to use this stupid useless pair of google glass when what I want to do is to walk into a different world, not one in which my dirty ass wall and unclear coffee cup is still on the table

Actually you can get your hands on VR not simply preorder it. You just can't get an Occulus. The Gear VR is pretty cool device if you already have a Samsung phone or tablet to pair it with. I can even stream my PC/PS4 to the device with no input lag.
Anyway, hate all you want, but VR is here to stay this time. I work for a major hospital and were already testing ways to use it in treatment.
The reason I find VR so compelling is because I dont want to go to the damn bar to watch a football game with or without OR. Hololense at this time doesnt not demonstrate to me personally anything I want to use
I dont want to go to the bar I dont want to see my messy coffee table with a minecraft map on it. and my dirty carpet in the background. I dont want to chase around an avatar around my small living space reminding me that I need to clean the dishes.

It was just my random reflection on how microsoft keeps pushing sports. They dont plan very well for future trends
I dunno. In 5-10 years, football will still be football and still have a consistent fan base. In 5 years, it's harder to predict where DoTA or [insert other popular thing here] will be. Maybe the devs will have done something to alienate the fan base by then (as an example). Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that one pass time is better then the other, just that sports seem like more of a 'safe bet' to me.
In the end, sports are something people can relate to and are good to demonstrate a practical application of the technology. Thinking more about it, everything I've seen about the MS device has focused on practical application, so maybe MS is trying to avoid the perception of overlap with Occulus as a gaming platform.
Ultimately though, are these really in the same category? The MS stuff seems to be about augmented reality and using your surroundings to present information (the wall, tables, and such in the video that was linked). I think of it along the lines of Google Glass though it may have reasonable differences. Occulus, while it seems like it could do the same, seems largely focused on replacing your surroundings with an immersive experience (such as Valkyrie). I think there is a reasonable market for both devices to be successful.
....I really want to play Valkyrie though...

I think one of the best use cases for VR is the "Exploded Blueprints" applications. If they could do an exploded blueprint for every car and small engine part on the planet, then there will be a VR setup in every machine shop too.
AR is where the market will be, NOT VR. For so many obvious reasons... The 1st being day to day application in the lives of the masses.
But if you're a VR clown that goes lalalalalalala while plugging yours ears, have at it.
Not saying that VR can't have a small niche & that in the future it will never be a thing... But we're still far from it.
IF and this is a very key points IF, AR can work the way these protoypes are suggesting it can then yes AR overall will be a larger product however not as much in games.
HOWEVER....
its NOT true that VR will be a 'small nitch'. as a point of reference, when factoring out Microsoft's floor space the majority of floorspace at GDC last year was dedicated to VR. That is not 'small'
and yes speaking for myself there is nothing about AR that interests me from a gaming standpoint. I would like to have it for my motorcycle helmet but not for games
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.

More info on this, please; my brother is a med student and we've had conversations about it, but I'd be interested in seeing your perspective.

Your earlier claim that "What you showed is a tech demo of a concept product similar to how the first Microsoft Surface product was presented and never went anywhere retail" is just plain wrong.
