Just going to throw out there that Sony's VR unit comes with an additional box that hooks into your PS4. I don't know if it's additional power supply or if it actually contains components that might boost performance or handle the headsets performance separately from the PS4.

This is why it's really a wait and see game right now. Occulus, Sony, and HTC/Valve should all launch this year and once the dust settles it should be easy for the consumer to find the right device for them.

To those saying VR is not going to succeed you're just flat out wrong this time around. My guess would be you haven't tried it either because even in it's most rudimentary form atm it is amazing. Look at the companies getting behind VR at this point. Even the hospital I work at is looking at how to use it in treatment

In regards to the gimmick of a device to hook your cellphone into...The Samsung Gear VR is a pretty great device for $100 that I already had the phone to operate. I watch Netflix and other movies/TV daily. There's no discomfort as some other posters suggested, it does not feel gimmicky or cheap, and my cellphone runs fine and lasts tons of time even with using it for VR on a daily basis.

The only complaint I have is that I get motion sickness when I am not in control of the movement via an input device. I don't believe that relates to the device because I have seen others use it in those circumstances without issue and I'm prone to motion sickness IRL or in any game with motion blur on.

You are the one comparing PSVR to OR, im talking about the number of people who can properly both on their respective platform.

I specifically said those 3 games because they do run like that.
The majority so far are locked at 30fps for whatever reason, maybe because the PS4 is not old enough and going to 60fps later in its lifespan will be consider an improvement in the games through out its life span (my assumption here)
no SONY IS THE ONE WHO IS COMPARING PSVR TO OR CV1  .....oh that makes me rage!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think although I dont know that the vast majority of all so called gaming PCs which far execed 36 million can run the OR dk1 which is 1080p

you should know that is just a marketing stunt.

There you go again with the 36 million units sold. Lets hope VR is successful and we will see in 5 years from now where that 36 million end up and the PSVR running on all of them making it more accessible to people, while the OR still requires beast machines to run, making its adoption slower.

Just to be clear, Im not on anyone's side here, i wont be using PSVR or OC, for other reasons. I hope both succeed with their own audience.
its a very good marketing stunt when people here were posting the exact same observation before Sony even did and plenty of times after they did as well. Its already embedded into the Sony Fans DNA and its pretty much the main motovation as to why I created this thread to begin with.

the adoption rate of OR I believe will be much higher than Sonys for multiple reasons and to be honest the only reason why people think otherwise is because of how Sony is comparing their VR to the rest which is in a dishonest way.

reasons adoption will be higher for OR
    1. before even being retail there are already 176 games and 100 planned. Sony has what? 10? 13? 20?
    2. VR is used for more than games and those other uses are growing far more than people think.
    3. The install base is higher when comparing to DK1 which is being more honest and by the end of the year the install base of CV1 will be growing considerably because PC costs are going to drop this year

Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.

With the Playstation VR can I just play a non-VR game with the headset - the game displayed on like a movie theater size screen or with me in a different 3D environment while playing the game on a 2D screen (similar to the Netflix VR app)? Or is it limited solely to VR titles? I think this will be the big factor in whether we see PS users adopt the hardware.

With the Gear VR I can already stream my PS4 to my PC and then to the Gear VR (really my cellphone) and I've played Bloodborne that way several times quite enjoyably even though it's not a VR game.

my understanding is when it comes to games its like the OR in which you are playing games that are designed to have VR as an option. with that said, to be honest playing a game like one would watch a movie in a Netflix app would be painful on many levels

Personally the only pain I've experienced is the setup process: 1 app to remote play PS4 on PC, 1 app to stream from PC to phone with VR output, hooking up the headset, etc. Actually playing the game is just fine. However, I only did it to see if I could and at this point it's not worth all those steps as it's more of a novelty than anything else.

I mean in theory you could have a virtual social space with many displays with groups of people around them playing games and able to interact. Or you could get together in a virtual space and do couch co-op similar to how I can watch movies in a virtual movie theater the same way right now. Your whole party could potentially be in a "room" together. This would build on PS3's Playstation Home idea that didn't get very much traction.

VR games in and of themselves are awesome but I think there are lots of other potential uses even in the gaming space.

I just realized that you are probably an OC backer and PC only gamer so all your opinions are biased towards "OC+PC > god, everything else = shit". It is pointless for me to argue with such bias. I'll just move on.

setting up any VR is a pain and that is what I consider its main achilles heel

regardless, what I mean is that when you are gaming on a monitor your vision of items outside of the monitor is a distraction its something technology wants to resolve, when in a game you dont want to see your coffee cup, your dirty desk etc etc. This is a problem with movies too but at least in my mind people arent trying to 'live in the movie' but games are different. In games there comes a point of absorption where everything that is not in the game starts to blend out and the more technology can help keep those items (like your coffee cup) out of the game without disrupting you desire to drink said coffee is an advancement.

So playing a game in VR as one would a netflix app is just replacing the coffee cup with something else your mind wants to factor out anyway.

having said that, if Sony did create such an app I get the feeling the folks at Oculus could create the same app before the end of the work day.
