BDO , what this community has been looking for?

It may not seem that I have been on this site for long, but in truth I have been on this site for years. I didn't have an account on this site for the majority of my time on here, simply because I lurked, and did not see a reason to make an account (I barely use this one as it is).

I never played any of the real old school games that people seem to love to recall such as EQ, Asherons Call, DAOC, Ultima, etc. My earliest MMORPG was runescape, whether that is old school or not will be left up to you.

For years I have listened to this community specifically point out things that they loved about the old style of games that they use to play. THe list below will describe features that BDO shares with the things people on this forum seem to love about old school MMO's.

World Bosses - The community manager confirmed that the US version of black desert will have more open world bosses (four of which are already in the game) that will take 30-40 players to take down.

Open World Dungeons/Raids - This is basically dungeons without instancing , though i heard these are more prominent in the recent update that the KR version had.

No Instancing - From what I understand this game has virtually no instancing that I am aware of. If it does, it is so minuscule that i have yet to hear of it.

Grinding - This one hits home for me, killing mobs for experience rather than quests being the main source of experience.

Community - I am assuming people will learn of each other as their is no cross server interaction that I am aware of. (No LFG/autogrouping)

Epic is Epic - I heard of a world boss that came out with a Valencia update that drops the strongest weapon for each class. The percentage of the weapon drops are quite low.

There are more things I could go on about but I think I have given a decent example of what I mean. My question is (ofr those players that reminisce over old school games) : Is this the game you have been waiting for? Why, or why not?

Man I agree, its one of the old style throw back MMOs, and i have been playing the ones you mentioned and more. But your post is going to get flamed to hell soon so dont take it seriously because people now dont know what the hell they want, and when they do get it they say i wish it was something else, its sad really because they miss out on the opportunity to play some good games looking for something perfect instead of playing it for what it is and enjoy it.

Would be true if the game had a trinity, support and CC classes, great group interdependence, and non-action combat. Other than that, sure.

Black Desert is the game I have been waiting years for.

When I first heard that this would be a game where you could grind to level that is what got my attention. When I found out it would have sandbox features in an open seamless world with open pvp and territory control I was sold.

Lineage 3 is still the game I am waiting on but just like ArcheAge this is another step in the right direction.

Asheron's Call had none of those

How is the in game cash shop now? The last I heard, about a month ago it turned pay-to-win. I stopped paying attention then.

I was sceptical about combat also....but its fun. Really fun. How this will work in groups or if its even a need for groups in pve except for world bosses, I dont know. It FEELS good.

That doesn't bother me much. I am genuinely just curious as to what people on here think. Whether they decide to flame or not is up to them. I appreciate the warning though, haha

I'm a big believer in everyone should enjoy whatever games they like. Having said that I will express my skepticism hat this is an original post, smells more like PR postings by Pearl Abyss.  If not well, play it if you enjoy it.

The game sounds great on paper. The cut scenes killed it for me though, reminds me of a imported Asian movie  with bad voice overs. Killed the immersion for me.

In a genre overflowing with themepark dominated mmog it is certainly good to see a bit more open world game.. it is still somewhat themepark by design but more open world than most. There is some oldschool feel to some of the features, but just as many complete opposites.

One thing that is holding me back is there is still a pretty high focus on pvp as endgame, and those openworld dungeons/raids/bosses are mostly talk at this point, but in the future when we see how much non pvp endgame there is, I might be persuaded.

The other thing is the combat. After playing the beta weekend I just weren't sold. Also I have not seen any info about how much coop between classes there will be. Coop combat mechanics is very important for me, and I know it can't be heal-tank-support, but there needs to be some advanced role system in place. If it is like gw2 every man (big boobed girl) for themselves, then that is a major minus for me.

What _could_ make me play it is that there is a good deal I didn't learn during the beta and people say there is deeper gameplay under the facade. And what other game is there really ? if you can't stand another hour of railroaded story driven mmogs. More likely I will give it a few years to mature and see what kind of game it actually is once the fog has cleared.

Anyways, from thinking BD would be another shallow asian themepark ending in a pvp gankfest, I can see it could be more than that.. but I am still not entirely convinced though :D

Your name and avatar killed my immersion on this mmo site.

The cash shop is not p2w, in fact the NA/EU version has quite significant changes that pretty much cut off any avenue for whales to p2w.

I'm not superfond of action combat, but I spent less than half my ingame time fighting stuff. The rest of the time I was trying out the other things the game offers. I'm a seldom poster but I made my first one around 2007, and I love reminiscing about old games. Does that count?

Lol no, not even close. Grouping actually was needed back then, BDO is a soloers wet dream, and a boring one at that.

It's not what I'm looking for, threads like this, "Best class for small group ganks" with all the enthusiastic replies, tell me to take this game off my list of hopefuls.  I'm sure both they and I will be happier for my decision.

I actually enjoy a lot of the other mechanics the game has. The ones that would push this game over the top are the ones i mentioned it lacks. To me, the most important aspect  of any MMO is how group mechanics work as well as how classes depend on each other within the PVE environment. This aspect is extremely lacking. I do like everything else though.

This is very good to hear, thank you! I'll start doing some more research into it.

The great thing about BDO- at least the Korean/japanese version- is that it caters to both people looking to gank and to players who prefer either group based pvp or pve. If you want to gank you have to be prepared for the consequences, its not like DF/mortal online etc.

Yeah, this is the only thing that personally scares me a little bit. I was decent at Tera's action combat but not so great with Blade & Soul's. The combos and stuff were a bit confusing, but I hope I can become decent at BDO's because I like the concept of the game in an overall sense.

While I agree that many here seem to be very excited for this game, BDO isn't going to be my thing.  The shift to action combat has been a major turn off to the entire genre for me.  Some games are OK while others, I simply don't like.  DCUO, for example, I enjoyed, but was never good enough at it to be competitive in a PvP environment.  B&S and Tera, I absolutely hated and just can't get past the combat far enough to enjoy the game.  Given the strong emphasis on PvP in BDO, I suspect I'll dislike it too.  I'll give it a shot after all the launch hype dies down, but I have pretty low expectations for it, personally.

To answer your question OP... I think BDO is taking the step in a direction that the genre needs. It's not the perfect game by any stretch but I hope that other developers will follow this direction.

Nah. Because BDO is a mix of old and new. And the loudest elements on this site want a clone of the old games they had back in the day. Anything new will get rejected.

My SWTOR referral link for those wanting to give the game a try. (Newbies get a welcome package while returning players get a few account upgrades to help with their preferred status.)

I am cynical, jaded, and skeptical about all MMOs coming out now. However, from all the videos I've been watching about this game, it looks pretty damn cool and I at least have to give it a try.

Stuff I'm concerned about: Fkn hate the gender locking, but if the game's good I can overlook it. I don't care about the the cash shop *as it is now.* If there really are consequences for ganking, that's a good thing.

About OWPVP: I hated Mortal Online because it was extremely difficult for a new player to get started solo. When I start out in a game, I don't join a guild right off (if my old guild is not playing) because I don't know if I'm going to stick around.

Darkfall (original) was alright. You could have fun and find a niche as a solo player, in a small clan, or in a larger clan or alliance. It just depended on what you wanted. There was some senseless ganking, but that's a part of pvp. You could still establish yourself solo until you got to know people and decide who you wanted to clan up with.

I think BDO will let you mature your character on your own and when you get the lay of the land, you can pick the people you want to guild with once you know your server and who plays at your time, etc. That's what it seems like anyway from what I've read and seen.
