As far as a new AAA MMO to play, then sure. Based off of my observations of posters here and where/how they post it seems the majority of the people here will play just about any new MMO that looks half-way decent. There are even a small handful, really actually only one that I know of, that has moved to 3-4 MMOs over the past 3-4 years (which is about as long as he has been a member here) and has claimed each and everyone of them to be the best on the market. Yup, even he is here too now lol.
By no means do I mean anything negative towards BDO or the people that are enjoying it. I think we are just accustomed to having so many MMOs thrown at us over these last few years that we are used to playing our fill in one MMO then moving on to the next new shiny as soon as it's out. BDO is the current new shiny. It looks very impressive and if I liked grinders I would be playing it too. However, I tried to play them during Lineage 2 beta several years ago and just couldn't get into that style of game. I know I'm not the only one who doesn't play these types of MMOs either so I would say the answer is, no this is not what this community as a whole wanted but there are definitely a lot that do.

Yeah, I think that this game is going to be more niche. I just hope it does well enough to sustain a healthy population. A low population will kill any good MMO for me personally.

That shouldn't be a problem. There's only 2 servers at release, so it's very unlikely either of them will become a "dead server".

It's not what I'm looking for, threads like this, "Best class for small group ganks" with all the enthusiastic replies, tell me to take this game off my list of hopefuls. I'm sure both they and I will be happier for my decision.
I don't eat seafood. For a variety of good reasons as far as I am concerned, and I won't even try it though most of my opinions were formed from experiences 40 to 50 years ago.
I am probably missing out. Same for you perhaps when it comes to trying new MMORPGs.
What could it really hurt to give this a try, you might surprise yourself even.
Besides its not nearly as nasty as eating something that breaths and swallows its own waste. (I don't swim in oceans either, ugh, giant toilet bowls.)

Would be true if the game had a trinity, support and CC classes, great group interdependence, and non-action combat. Other than that, sure.
Asheron's Call had none of those
Yes but AC was back in the days when people grouped in MMOs because that's what you did. So the lack of grouping mechanics did not matter.
grouping in AC at launch was just to be able to chat with friends. It wasn't necessary for killing stuff, there weren't elite type group mobs added til later. There was no global chat though.
Lol no, not even close. Grouping actually was needed back then, BDO is a soloers wet dream, and a boring one at that.
Grouping is needed in BDO also but its not a progression wall compared to most mmo's.
Velika: City of Wheels: Among the mortal races, the humans were the only one that never built cities or great empires; a curse laid upon them by their creator, Gidd, forced them to wander as nomads for twenty centuries...
All I can say is that I've been on these forums here since 2003... I've seen so many games pass that I dismissed during their beta I can't even count them anymore.
But once BDO is launched, I'll have 3 active "classical"(*) MMORPGs in my "actually played games" list: WoW. GW2. And BDO. WoW since Nov. 23., 2004 (beta before). GW2 since August 25., 2012 (also beta before).
When I find good games, I stay. That doesn't mean it's the only game I will ever play, neither does it mean that I won't try new games either. I rarely pre-order games once I've tried the beta, because well... most are just bad, or rather, not good enough for me. I first tried BDO in CB1 and wasn't impressed at all, and it was my fault, because I didn't give the game enough of a chance and I was busy with other things back then too. Thanks to the advice of fellow poster @Distopia , I gave it a second try and this time I did more than just combat and leveling, and I was overwhelmed with the amount of activities available to you in this game. I felt like I was back in UO where I logged in and was like "so... what to do today? so many choices!".
Then, I pre-ordered the Explorer package, which I finally upgraded to Conqueror.
Note that everything isn't positive in this game for me. The three major negative points to me are: - I'd have preferred a skill based character development like UO and AC1. - The "gender/race" locked classes are annoying. - Some art is a bit too "Asian" for my personal taste.
Still the good by far overwhelms the bad, and it's for now the only AAA quality game worth playing in this specific style, fixing the huge flaws that Archeage had (housing, character level dependency, etc...). So I'll end with my favorite theme park (WoW), my favorite dynamic world (GW2) and hopefully my favorite sandboxy game (DBO). So yeah, personally, this game is possibly what I've been looking for. Not perfect, but good enough for me to get an entertainment time back from it proportional to the money I have invested.
(*) I also play "The Crew" and "Shroud of the Avatar", but the first isn't a classical MMO (playing cars...) and the second isn't a MMO even though an excellent RPG.
Good write up, your reasoning for playing is solid, does sound like the title contains many elements I too would enjoy and like you stated, as long as the good outweighs the bad, it's worth trying.
I'm going to hold off for now though, a personal quirk of mine is to give a new game only one shot to grab me, and I suspect I might have stuck with more of them (such as AA or ESO) had I only joined the at least 6 months post launch.
Heck my two favorite MMOS, DAOC and EVE had been released for 6 months for the former and 3 years for the latter and I've stuck both the most.
WOW was the only MMO to grab me from launch until I left 2 years later unhappy with the changes BC brought. I did return for Catacombs but it was very clear the game continued to move in a direction I didn't care for.
So same here, I'll let the dust settle for a bit and then check it out.
If you are so inclined do share your post launch experiences say 3 or 4 months in, I tend to rely on poster's opinions like yourself and DMKano even to give me a clearer picture of how a title "really" plays. (both of you leave out the messy hyperbole in your evaluations)

I have this same problem, for whatever reason it took multiple looks for me to uncover something exciting and worth learning. BDO takes some patience, and generally speaking, players short of patience stand out like a sore thumb in regards to this title.
For many, this will be a long-term MMO, and they will stay with it for some time (at least until something better comes). I dont think there are really many in the "works" right now to challenge it, except maybe Camelot Unchained or possibly Crowfall, but both are still pretty far off.
It has many of the elements players are looking for as described earlier, a good mix of old school mechanics and gameplay, updated with a modern take and graphics.
In the end though, I personally feel like the cash shop and OWPVP will keep it from being anything other than a smaller niche game. Launch will be huge, because there are no competing MMOs right now, but once the newness wears down, or something else is close to alpha/beta/launch, people will still start leaving. Its inevitable these days.
I see this one lasting longer than Archeage, but will fall into the same niche of players in the end. Doesnt mean it isnt a great game, which I think it is. It just caters to a certain crowd, which unfortunately, is not the majority of MMO players. Plan to get about 6 months of great gaming, and if you get closer to 9 months, you did well. Everyone should have at least tried it, and you are only shooting yourself in the foot if you didnt give this one a go. It wont be for everyone, but for some, it will be the game they have been waiting for.

I am hopeful that they will ad more PvE content to make it more enjoyable to the PvE-centric gamer as the game evolves. There is also the chance that they will loosen the PvP-centric end game, as many games do, once they come to the realization that the PvE crowd is worthy of more end-game attention. It's worth noting that unlike single player games, MMORPGs are an ever-evolving dynamic. MMORPG game play tends to evolve according it's player base needs. There is a great foundation of PvE game play in BDO to make it worth fighting for, for the PvE player. I would suggest sticking with it if one is of the belief that it has enough good qualities to override its few negatives. Giving up on it prematurely will not help realize it's true potential.
I watched a short video on this game I am really struggling to understand its appeal. First an foremost at least to me (which clearly dosent make it a requirement) an 'open world' needs to not have classes. That is often times in of itself a deal breaker for me. Then there is gender locking? what is a group of 20 players standing around going to look like? not that I give a damn about that but using that as an example. 3rd person is always a killer for me but sometimes like Xyson I can overlook it.
yeah I dont get it.
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.

If the only thing you know about this game is a "short video", you definitely won't get it. No more than you'd get the depth of WoW in a similarly "short video". Ask for a key (there are several with the founder packs, sorry mine are already all given away) and try it yourself. That's the ONLY way to be sure.
Me thinks he is being facetious. It takes no struggle to understand BDO's appeal. While obviously not appealing to all, it's game play appeal is obvious to anyone viewing it with an objective frame of mind. I can narrow it down to the following few short words ... a veritable buffet of progression and achievement based game play.
