Is This Game for Me Thread

nate1980nate1980 Member UncommonPosts: 2,074
I didn't see any threads like this out there already, so I'll create one for myself, and people can feel free to use the same one in order to list their gaming preferences so that more knowledgable BDO players can educate us on a game buying decision.

So whether it be DAoC, SWG, CoH, WoW, or any other game out there, I've always been the type that could be described as an adventurer. I prefer adventuring with like-minded people, but I'm fine doing it solo too. What I mean by adventuring, is basically what some people may call exploration and combating all the nasty things that threaten ordinary citizens of the world. I'm not a crafter, a trader, a business owner or what have you. I'm also not a griefer or a spastic PvPer that gets off on the thrill of killing other people. I really do enjoy the leveling up process with great character customization. Assigning attribute points, skill points, and choosing which skills I want to learn is what I love about RPG's, along with the adventuring.

Considering the above, I open the floor to the more knowledgeable BDO players out there and to whoever else may be on the fence about this game.

People in their honeymoon are to busy enjoying the game, they will not post either..

the game is unique in thats more a sandbox then anyone other game released in a decade.. There is so many possible ways to play the game, the depth of many systems is incredible...

-there are people mindlessly grinding to get to max xp level..
    - others are spending time to create a trade emperium
    - i am traveling around the world in search of knowledge uncovering stories and lore as i do so..
    - and then there is the crafter... The crafting system is totally different from any other game..
    - i cant comment much on how pvp will change this, but i am not affraid of a challenge and will make sure to travel with friends

If you are looking for the traditional themepark MMO, you will only find snipsets of it here,  its a freshand orriginal game that borrowed quite a lot of things from older pre wow games as well as some things from outside the MMO gamescene..

you will only know if you like this game from playing it yourself, i would say atleast a month or so to find out about the huge endgame content thats everything except instanced dungeons and raids is all about, there are many systems that keep you involved to the game at higher levels, but you need to find out for yourself if they are your thing

Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)

My guess is the biggest bad guys in this game are the other players you interact with more than anything else

In a heavily PVP orientated game, thats kind of the inevitable corollary. :p

lock your character at 45 and you will never see PvP, still enjoying all the challeneges and systems the game has to offer...

But in general comments like this make me sick... this game is mostly about PvE, as witotuh the huge PvE part, noboddy will thrive in PvP..  You just cant just do PvP, thats not an option.... thats something many do not realise.

No Reason to feel sick it was just a friendly jab at bolts who's always asking for a PvE server in EVE.

Don't get me wrong I am playing that game and I love it but I would have to say by what I am reading, this game is not for you.

There's a few reason why I am stating this and they are: this game you need to be a crafter and you need to be able trade and understand trading. This game also have some people stuck on stupid because they can't figure out the way the node system works at all. A player also must discover things like food (because in order for a player to build his stam and strength up you need to eat food and run alot). There's a lot of hidden things in this game that would not agree with your playstyle. For example you have be be able to sit through and understand the conversations you have with NPCs in order to gain friendship from the to unlock new quest. Sometimes in order to pass their conversations you have to fail their conversations. This is an example of some indepth sandbox style.

Now you can always come to the game and level up but I don't see you getting that far into this game if you don't take the finer things it has to offer. Here's one more example: in order for you to build your strength up in this game you have to get this pack and walk really really really freaking slow (which in turn builds your strength).

Ayah you people all tempt me lah. Okaylah I give in I will lock my character at 45 and buy it. Been reading so much about it plus Iselin's little horse post kinda made me really yearn for a game like this. Sounds like a real world you can immerse yourself in. Hope the combat is not too hard to learn. BOOO!

Haha combat is about the easiest thing in this game. It took me forever to learn how to do the node thing. I had to go online over and over during beta testing. And lets not get started on the fact that your pets and mounts also level and you have to feed them too. Oh and by the way if you get a mount remember: mobs can kill it. Fun times!

Combat,  depending on the  class you play, can be very hard to master. For instance,it will take you some time before you know all the Valkyrie skills and combos, and when to use them.
Well I am playing a Warrior (unless my pic is not showing on this site) but it's freaking easy however I do have to admit all I choose is tanking moves. All I ever use is shield stuff, not too big on the whole slash slash crap. I think when it comes down to me pvping I am going to annoy the crap out of players for stunning them so damn much.

Playing it yourself is always the best option, but the investment isn't worth the risk for me, thus relying on my 14 years of MMO experience + having played most western MMORPG's, I can properly deduce if a game is for me or not by reading other peoples impressions and reviews. Simply put, not much has been spoken about adventuring and most talk is about trading and taming horses. Two things I don't care about. I'm a strictly go out and explore and fight stuff kind of guy. For example, I loved group grinding in the open world and dungeons in DAOC in order to level up and build unique characters.

If a world is beautiful enough, then I'll want to explore it. If mobs are challenging enough, then I won't get bored fighting them. End game PvP is okay for me, but the entire journey has to be worth doing or else it's not worth the money, even if it is only part of a days pay.

Exploration has to be about more than a pretty world, at least for me.

You have to find stuff that justifies your time, including unique lore, quests, NPCs, items, dungeons, and so on.

Maybe i am misreading this, but the implication is that unless you are above level 45, then PVP'ers cannot attack you, is this correct?

Not just the hard to master thing - some classes feel downright weird :)

A big part of my enjoyment of this game is that I found a class that feels much like the classic MMOs I've been playing for decades. The wizard and witch gameplay seems familiar to me with a lot of very natural follow-up combos like a stunning thunderbolt followed by large area lightning AOE, a fireball followed by a fireball explosion, etc. Add to that the mana leach, self heal, magic bubble shield, mini teleport dodge and the only rez in the game... all very familiar. A typical wizard with a dash of healer.

In the CB2 I tried Bezerker, Sorceress and Tamer and I find their play style confusing... as in I know it's going to take me a long time to get the hang of it, confusing. Haven't tried warrior/valkyrie or the archer yet but they look like they could also be more western-traditional (Paladin, Hunter.)  The Blader also looks like it could be a helluva lot of fun. Can't wait to try that one when we get it in NA/EU.

I think you under-estimate my patience. I'm the guy who reads every quest in a game and loves NPC faction aspects in games. Especially when there is a cost/benefit to choosing factions. I also enjoy realism in a game, so survival aspects are appealing. I just don't like crafting and tradeskills. I'm the sort that in SWG, I earned my way as an adventurer. I sold what I found, and interacted with tradesman/women that had the equipment I needed to tackle tougher challenges. I made a lot of friends and connections in the crafting community, I just didn't craft myself.

To equate this in a real life scenario, picture yourself as a historic adventurer. Eating, establishing connections with the locals, building your skills through realistic means, exploring, dealing with hostiles, selling your services to locals as you pass through, conquering challenges you come across are all things you expect. If you spend your life mastering the art of combat and exploring foreign lands, you're not going to be a crafter, hire workers, manage trade routes and etc. Pack mules, horse taming, and crafting is mostly what I hear spoken about this game. If I wanted to run a business or master a trade, then I'd work more overtime, because I already do that.

Tons... weapons and gear, crystals to slot into your weapons to give them special stats, rare stones you need to use to upgrade weapons and armor to a higher tier, common and rare materials for crafting, housing items and decorations some of which give you buffs, silver, stackable mob specific junk, other stuff that looks like the previous junk but if you right click on it it'll tell you which NPCs wants it for trade for special items or other rewards, rare trade goods that sell well at trade NPCs (as long as you've invested contribution points to link the area where you got the drop to that NPC trader)... much more.

Do I find these items through exploration or by grinding/farming?

What I'm asking is if I can expect to find a hidden cave with a journal or some kind of unique item - or something that's actually really rare that?

Because that's the kind of thing that inspires me to explore.

If you think PvE on a warrior is easy you're either doing it wrong or you're a wunderkind. To effectively gather up 10+ mobs and stun lock and aoe them down without taking damage is quite challenging. Yes you can go at a slower pace and/or chug health pots like mad, but you will earn less money/xp that way.

I will say combat is easy when to comes to straight up killing a mob. But to really maximize your grinding is a challenge.

Depends what you define as "unique item".

If you mean rare items, you can find many of those, which can be turned in for a good profit at a trade merchant or turned into outfits and other stuff.
I even got wearable items from fishing.
About fishing, depending on where you fish, you can catch different things, and also waters have variable richness and you'll want to find spots that have plenty of fish.
Caves, NPCs, quests, you have those everywhere, many hidden in remote places.
Since the game also has "Assassin's Creed" like movement features, with climbing and jumping, you have to use that to explore hidden spots.
Two days ago I assembled a treasure map ending in a hidden cave.
Hmm, that sounds interesting - thanks.

I'm looking for a reason to give it another chance - and this could be a good one.
