Found this article: "B2P won't work"

VolgoreVolgore Member EpicPosts: 3,872
I just stumbled upon this article on the internets, nto sure if it has been posted yet. Maybe somebody is interested to check on another opinion as to why B2P is supposedly not going to work for BDO:

http://mmos.com/editorials/black-deserts-buy-to-play-model-wont-work

While this guy has a point, i personally cross fingers that it will work out nonetheless.

No problem for me.  I don't mind throwing down $30 for a newly released game in the west and  that clearly has a great deal of thought and effort put into it.  I would have more of a problem if it was the usual $60.

I just realized it actually is buy to play. I almost fell out of my chair laughing. Then I thought ok so will this be the fastest buy to play transition to free to play game ever?

It's from Oct 2015.... it's essentially saying people aren't going to buy it... and based on a small percentage of western players who already played in RU or Korean servers, hardly a realistic measure for the actual western audience.

Isn't that the typical response to an interloper saying negative things about a subject in that subject's own forum? ...right or wrong?

'Sandbox MMO' is a PTSD trigger word for anyone who has the experience to know that anonymous players invariably use a 'sandbox' in the same manner a housecat does.

No game is more fun than the one you can't play, and no game is more boring than one which you've become familiar.

Stopped reading when he said the game does not have the hype.

  • H0urg1assH0urg1ass Member EpicPosts: 2,380
This is absurd.  This article couldn't be more wrong.  BDO is currently the only MMO title on the horizon and it's hyped hard.

Not only that, but B2P is not dead at all.  If it was, then Activision wouldn't be selling millions of copies of each and every CoD game that releases, or Assassin's Creed, Far Cry, Saint's Row, GTA... blah bluh blah blah.. wrong wrong wrong.

Not only that, but NA/EU folks aren't playing on the Russian and Asian servers because they want to play there with no one who speaks their language.  Most of them are just using that open market to find the best way to dominate on the NA/EU servers when it goes live here.  Of course most of those people are going to buy the game and swap servers when it goes live.

Sounds to me more like it's some guy who wanted it to be F2P at launch and is attempting to use the power of the press to incur change.

Now, that being said, do I think it will launch B2P and go F2P a little down the road?  Of course it will.  That's a no brainer.  You bilk the early adopters for that quick influx of cash and after sales tail off, you swap to F2P to get everyone else exposed to your cash shop.  It's economics 101.

Who really cares if it is? either way in the long run the cash-shop is going to be the main revenue stream. Just as it would be for any "B2P" title.

I think what he is basically saying is that Daum is cutting themselves short on possible income but i do not agree at all,it is simply a different model.I also do not believe very many Western players are staying on foreign servers.

There is a big difference,on F2P servers you have a different cash shop "obviously".As i already stated Daum likely plans on selling you updates that koreans already have access to,so don't worry Daum is not done grinding money out of you.

Comparing to GW2 is a big no no,GW2 is not as good as people think,it is severely lacking all over the game. You have a zone "smallish" in GW2 and it is at least imo pretty empty,a few npc's cycling  on/off quests.Graphics and entire game of GW2 was not that intensive,it is basically a lot of brush/trees to make a zone look busier than it is.Point being BDO is a bigger more diverse game.

Now in combat there are similarities but that does not dictate a pricing model.I feel imo the model of b2p is correct only i am not happy about cash shops ever.It all comes down to total money this model brings in,if B2p does not bring in enough then i would suspect f2p and since their cash shop prices are so high,i am guessing they NEED to see more money OR they simply over rate the game's popularity.

How many B2P games (no sub) have gone F2P?

Now if the article was about why a subscription might not work ....

For what it's worth, the guy who wrote that article is the same guy who founded MMOHut.com, which has always had a pretty strong focus on F2P games, so it doesn't really surprise me that he's against Daum's decision to go B2P.

I hear this comment a lot. What's your point? So what if it's f2p in a year? Right now it's $30. If you want to play for free, then wait a year.

That's like saying a $60 game is going to be $30 on sale next year. You want to play it on release, pony up the $60. If you don't mind waiting a year or two then you can play it cheaper. I do that a lot. I bought Borderlands 2 for less than $20, including a ton of DLC, a couple of years after it's release. Obvious insight is obvious.

Or look at the Witcher series which everyone lauds.  I got it for 30 bucks for all three games when it was on sale at Steam before Christmas.  It was worth it.  But buying any of those games when they first came out at the higher price point would have also satisfied me as to their value.  Wait if you can stand it or pay more to play when it is still bright and shiny, your choice.

I doubt it, people are willing to believe that a paid access stops botting and cheating and gold sellers and they are willing to pay entrance fee for an f2p game, so why would the publisher be stupid enough to cut a source of stable income?

Well it definitely helps more than it hurts.  If they actually ban people.  And for $30 how can you go wrong?

Don't you go and bring logic and reason into this thread, Mardukk!
EVERYONE knows that B2P games have a gazillion bots at launch! Those goldfarmers are apparently insane enough that they can afford to spend thousands of dollars to get banned right away. Even worse, they KEEP doing it, because their money is never runs dry, and they can just keep buying copies.

...Or so would some people on these forums have us believe anyway. :pleased:

Actually, they should be grateful it's B2P.  They are having a hard enough time with a B2P launch.  If it was F2P, it would be worse.

The article is about subscription not working...

thats because all you fools still dont get it... The only fair way to go for MMOs is subscription with no cash shop at all...

box prices for game and anuall expansions, and subs for playing the game, would have been the only fair way...

Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)

The article lost me at "Why on Earth should they switch to the Western servers when it's going to cost them money?"

A bunch of freeloaders complaining that they have to buy a game. The reason good mmos are dying as fast as the bad mmos.

yep, that is unless you dig spending cash on items and services that will have you spending far more than a $15 sub would. there are very few decent and totally free games out there with no strings attached, most of them private servers.

I think we can all agree that it will transition to f2p. So most people will just wait until its free before they play. Those who are the most interested in the game will be willing to play but those who aren't too into it will just wait.

"A bunch of freeloaders complaining" - see this is why an f2p game can become b2p with same aggressive cash shop as f2p in western region. You want to feel superior with your wallet so much that you don't mind if a free game is suddenly charging you money. Good business for publishers. People like you also the reason why cash shop came into existence too, remember that.
