A bunch of freeloaders complaining that they have to buy a game. The reason good mmos are dying as fast as the bad mmos.
"A bunch of freeloaders complaining" - see this is why an f2p game can become b2p with same aggressive cash shop as f2p in western region. You want to feel superior with your wallet so much that you don't mind if a free game is suddenly charging you money. Good business for publishers. People like you also the reason why cash shop came into existence too, remember that.
Im not talking about Black Desert, im talking about the idea in general. People nowadays expect mmos to be free to play. A balanced model works better than anything else. Subscription wont work anymore because they also add cash shops to those games too. But free to play has the biggest risks of wasting money and the lowest quality on top of it.
While I don't necessarily agree with the article, seems that there is alot of misconceptions in this thread:
1. People comparing this to single player games like AC: You don't know what you are talking about. MMO's and single player games don't work the same way. 2. People saying this won't be as ''bad'' as GW2 and therefore will work: BDO will be lucky if they get 1/3 of GW2's sales which highly unlikely. Regardless of what you think of GW2 as a game, BDO with how it has been promoted and how excited people are about it, will never come close of the commercial success GW2 had at release. 3. People claiming this is really hyped: it is hyped compared to the competition. However, this is by no means hyped compared to really hyped games like SWTOR and GW2 at release. It is not even remotly close.
Now, I am not saying that BDO is in any way bad or will flop. I believe the game will get decent sales and will transition into a free to play game after a while. However, I don't agree with the people arguing how this is such a huge release because it is not. It is a good game imo. A couple of really nice and innovative systems and a fancy sandbox model. It will have a niche audience though and won't be quite as big as people are projecting. That's what I believe at least.

I don't expect games to be f2p. In fact the business model i prefer is b2p with optional cash shop and optional sub, take note of the word "optional" here. But in case of BDO, it is a f2p game in 3 region with aggressive cash shop but in NA/Eu it is b2p with aggressive cash shop, i can't get along with this, it is nothing more than milking morons who want a fucking "i paid so i am better" e-pin.

It'll take many years before the mentality of "it's crap but it's free" will go away. many good MMOs will die in the process. This is the consequence of F2P.
Good mmo don't die because of f2p, if a "good" game dies because of a crappy game that is free then that game was not good to begin with.

Im not happy with how they are doing it either. I will limit myself to buying inventory space as i do in every mmo, and the occasional pet or discounted skin. Typical B2P cash shop stuff. Everything else im not interested. IMO GW2 did a much better job at balancing the cash shop and B2P model. But i still believe the quality/quantity of the game (BDO) is well worth the $30-50 they are asking for, considering the free versions are P2W, our version removed the P2W elements and made them obtainable in game without paying, like a normal game does.
For what it's worth, the guy who wrote that article is the same guy who founded MMOHut.com, which has always had a pretty strong focus on F2P games, so it doesn't really surprise me that he's against Daum's decision to go B2P.
Omer Altay was the owner creator of MMOHuts.com the second largest F2P review site. He made his cash when he sold. The thing that was not sold was his personality. The money maker of the entire site. Without his name, voice, and personality there was no product to be sold. Remotay is a F2P God / oracle. I'm not revealing any secrets when I say I'm not a fan of the F2P model, but I respect no F2P commenter more than Omer Altay.
He is no "Captain Obvious." If Omer is writing about it, then there were questions that needed a voice of authority to answer or speak up.

Cash shop is not aggressive and is not necessary. It is also not that over priced compared to many other cash shops that exist. (WoW charges people 10 dollars for a helmet and 25 - 30 for a mount while being a sub + box price game... The cash shop has no items that give you an ultimate edge, it's not pay2win in the least design wise and is entirely unnecessary at all.. Weight stuff and inventory expansion is available in world without spending a dime (spending just speeds up the process) and nothing in the shop other than the costumes where people complain about a 10% exp buff and some luck stuff is even remotely questionable (the costumes aren't that questionable even as people seem to act like this is some other MMORPG where levels are a big thing, levels don't give you a hugeeeeeeeeee stat bonus at all in BDO and won't help you all that much vs gear enchanting)
"Not only that, but NA/EU folks aren't playing on the Russian and Asian servers because they want to play there with no one who speaks their language."
Try playing more games on EU servers, I sometimes have a hard time spotting the English post lol.

Keep deluding yourself thinking "cash shop not necessary", you will get to the point soon where you will like to tear them apart, i am not saying any more than that.

I think it's sort of a toss up between it switching to F2P down the road, or bringing out small "expansions" that will also be B2P; probably the same price as launch. Either way, I think games should be judged based on how many players stick around and continue to endorse the game, after playing it. If people say it's good, more people will try it.
As far as if B2P was the right choice, I think it's fine. As long as they don't try to churn out "content expansions" which are just large patches already available in other regions, and charge another $30 each time.
Edit: If the expansions are actually meaningful though, I'd probably be okay with it.
Dunno if it was mentioned but all the other Regions implemented a IP Block yesterday so no one can play in Korea or Russia anymore BDO EU also has IP Blocks for those regions (and a lot of other country's), so the ppl allrdy playing in Korea or Russia are forced to switch (or use a VPN and risk to be banned since they implemented anti VPN measures as well)
If they go the GW2 route I am fine with that. B2P until maybe the first expansion then include the base game with the Xpac and charge another $20 or $30 USD and a couple of classes. Maybe a race or two. A huge landmass addition with maybe some open world dungeons in them.
There won't be payed xpacks or DLCs they confirmed that long ago and it wouldn't make sense in this game anyway. They release content in content patches only.
I just realized it actually is buy to play. I almost fell out of my chair laughing. Then I thought ok so will this be the fastest buy to play transition to free to play game ever?
Free to play by next week.
Probably their plan all along. Maybe setting a new trend of pretending to be B2P at launch for a little extra $$ then switching at the most opportune time.
An article that concludes the most obvious thing we've been saying for months - b2p was there to get money up front, then f2p conversion will follow in the future.
Everyone knows this, I hope.
@Torval said it well, "Obvious insight is obvious"
The market has shown in the past with titles such as AA or Neverwinter players will pay big money up front to gain early access or special items in game for F2P games.
For a very long time now its been "obvious" devs are moving away from a single monetization model and using hybrids.
IMO more and more are heading towards the "OMNI" payment model which could include a kickstarter, early access for alpha/beta, special editions, fees to avoid launch day queues, up front purchase costs (B2P/box fee), monthly patron/sub fees, services such as name or appearance changes, and of course, a cash shop of varying invasiveness.
The only one they seem to have overlooked is a fee to quit playing the game.

Am I the first to notice that the author of the article in question edited it yesterday and now admits he got it completely wrong as the launch has been "Super Successful" ?
I don't mind b2p games, but what I find weird about BDO is that it's f2p for some regions and b2p for others. And the b2p regions (NA/EU) are IP blocked against the rest of the world. You'd think it should be the other way round.
I just stumbled upon this article on the internets, nto sure if it has been posted yet. Maybe somebody is interested to check on another opinion as to why B2P is supposedly not going to work for BDO:
While this guy has a point, i personally cross fingers that it will work out nonetheless.
it's crazy how stupid u people are lol.
BDO works as F2P,B2P and sub model. the game is better then wow, tera, rift and more games. since bdo has better graphics, gameplay, story, generally better servers, and alot more and also BDO has no P2w element its pure cosmic from cash shop.
this game will not go f2p as there is no reason to. only reason its F2p in asia is due to the fact that they spend tons of money on gambling. just look at Maplestory europe, and Us almost only asian people playing it and they spend 1000$ a month on it

The cash shop is totally different in the NA/EU version, the p2w items have been taken out and you can't sell cash shop items in game, its a significant difference.
In fact, I think BDO may be one of or even the least p2w mmo currently on the market. Its cash shop is somewhat similar to ESO's in terms of "p2w", but it has no player to player trade which means you can't buy gold or get given items to become powerful. It is definitely one of the only mmos where every player has no choice but to work/play the game to progress.
I think BDO will be successful - to a point. The preorders and initial rush has proven it, I'm sure the company is getting a good return on what they spent to bring the game over to the west. It'll end up being a good financial investment.
Problem is, BDO looks like it'll fall into the same trap as literally every game before it. Longevity. There will come a point in time, when another MMORPG is on the block, and we'll all flood to that. Maybe that's just a lifecycle that we need to accept now, but compare how I felt while playing EQ/WoW/FF14, I'm already sniffing around for something to replace my fix. Before I wouldn't even have known other games existed.

Not to piss on your parade but did you take a look at how many other AAA MMOs are in active Development and coming out soon recently? I don't know which game we could jump on any time soon since this will be the last for a good while probably.
Everything coming out this year is a sequel, relaunch, remake, port, or
franchise game. None of the major AAA developers are taking a single
risk when it comes to products. The fact that games like The Division
are going to look like Destiny at launch, instead of the promised
"revolutions" is telling.
What happened? The last console generation went too long, and MMOs
have been killed by the success of World of Warcraft / the general
behavior in publishers in dumping all their money into themepark MMOs
that try to get the same revenue that WoW gets.
You're looking at crowdfunded and indie games if you want something
different. To be frank though, the games of the 90s and early 2000s that
were beloved also came from indie devs, almost none of the major
studio-published franchises and so-called AAA games of those eras are
remember or beloved.
AAA publishers react to markets, not create them. You won't see
decent MMOs again until a smaller developer invents the next successful
game, then the big developers will all try to clone it
