Yeah, yeah, you've been saying that loudly for over a year now.
How long has it been now since the first allegation that "the money is all gone" ?
Seems like SC is always going to collapse "next month", lol
Well if people werent subbing for 'news' or still buying ships it might have.
We wont know until the pyramid collapses. I am sure right up until Madoff was cuffed and stuffed people were saying the same things about him. Thats how cons work, and ones that are as substantially funded as this one have very long shelf lives.
Is it really a con? I dont know, on some level for sure, especially if once (if) it gets delivered it is nothing close to resembling the game he has been touting for years.
But from anecdotal evidence if they had more they would be showing it off. They never miss a chance to 'prove' something, and when they stop 'proving it' (through fake videos or sliced together cut scenes) it tells to me (someone with a brain) that they dont have much. The sheer fact they admitted they arent going to do the Star Marine now says a ton. And it serves a few purposes, first it buys them some 'good will' with the guys who they really dont need to pay off because they admit something that is negative and the white knights can spin it, it allows them to move on past it and stop answering questions about it. (thus not having to lie about it when this all eventually gets investigated). And it was a segue into other admissions of things they arent going to be able to do.
That is really what has been going on recently, what they HAVEN'T been able to do, rather than what they have been able to do. Again not sure how anyone can spin that as positive other than the spin zone guuys who say...at least theyre admitting it, (BUT) its still not as bad as the critics are claiming (which no one knows)
Making a completely unplayable tech demo first released almost two years ago semi playable and adding a few ships to it isnt real progress IMO, but thats what the white knights continue to hang their hats on..."we went from 2.0 to 2.2". Big frigging whoop. They cancelled a half dozen things and raised 20 million in that time. Not a very good trade off.
LOL @ where this thread has gone...how long before the inevitable lock?
Yeah unfortunatly I see this thread getting locked. The fanbois would just love that too. Letting this bombshell title sink to the back pages of the forums.
Let me try and get this back on topic:
Rob confirmed there is truth to the Escape Artist article. That must be a real stinger for SC fans who attacked the article, which we now know as being true as confirmed by an employee in an interview.
Despite the fact that I was NOT the source of the article, I have gone on the public record as saying that accounts told to me, were 100% the same as told to The Escapist. In fact, they even got more info than I was privy to at the time.
Aside from that, one of the early bona fide investors (not a JPEG backer) did his own research after the article hit, due to having contacts at the studios, got the results and PROMPTLY asked them for their financials, comments about the veracity of the statements etc.
They never gave him any of that.
In the end, he got his investment bank involved and got RSI/CIG to return ALL of his money. Had they resisted (like they do with refunds), THAT would have been the law suit (and SEC involvement) which would have cracked this whole thing wide open. Sadly he is a guy who saw an investment opportunity and doesn't want any drama, nor to be responsible for the collapse of the project, because I assure you, the minute ANY aspect of this farce goes into the legal system, they're fucked. That's why - aside from NOT having ANY grounds for that - they're not suing anyone.
Game developers are just human beings who happen to make games for a living. If you want to hold us up to higher standards of conduct, then go ahead ...but don't be surprised if we don't uphold them.

SO..what exactly should we expect to happen? IF their situation is so volatile and ready to burst, why has no one stepped in as of yet? What's keeping the man at bay so to speak?

Money, ignorance, stupidity.
I suspect the reason for 15 studios spread around the world is to keep everything compartmentalized so that only a few (probably 3 people total) knows whats going on, and maybe for plausible deniability no single person even knows everything that is going on.
All the people know who are working on it is they are doing something and theyre getting paid. Whether that is actually progressing the game they cant answer, they more than likely think it does since that is the goal of most projects. But I am sure they couldnt answer it with 100% security in their answer.
Again the best cons all have some semblance of truth and legitimacy to them...until they dont. Again con may be a misnomer but I dont think so, but the best anyone can argue about it is semantics on either side. Because I have read plenty of people who said if all they got now was the tech demo they wouldnt consider it a fraud or a con, despite the extreme dichotomy of what hat thing cost and how much was raised.
Somehow, I don't think a spiral of self-loathing, expressed as perpetually malign spreading of obvious falsehoods against that which you wanted to achieve, but never could, is a wise way to represent yourself.

The facts are simple and have been known for some time now. BC3K was a financial success. To the extent that I had NO problems releasing it for FREE after Take Two paid me a boat load of money at the time, to settle and walk.
And RIGHT THERE in their SEC filing for when they went public, is BC3K listed as one of their TOP EARNERS. So yes, MY FIRST GAME, had a hand in the Take Two company you know today.
I know quite a lot of indie devs who would LOVE to "fail" like that; while yet sticking around decades later doing exactly the same thing that got them started.
not sure I follow a single word there. what is BC3k?
Which part don't you follow?
FYI BC3K is an abbreviation for Battlecruiser 3000AD (my first game which was released back in 1996 while still in Beta, by its then publisher, Take Two Interactive)

This one?
Battlecruiser 3000AD (also known as BC3K on Usenet) is a science fiction computer game, noted for its long, troubled development history.
Smart and Take-Two advertised that Battlecruiser 3000AD used a neural network to perform artificial intelligence tasks in the game. However, this claim has been criticised as highly improbable by other games designers. In one article in a computer games magazine, Keith Zabalaoui, former NASA programmer and one of the designers of the Close Combat series of strategy games, was quoted as saying, "I have a hard time believing it's in there... the concept of training [neural nets] to do the complex tasks required in a game is inconceivable. It's mumbo jumbo. I guarantee you that if there's a neural net that does anything in [BC3K] this man would be in the Computer Science Hall of fame."[17]
Upon its initial release of Battlecruiser 3000AD, the game[18] contained many bugs that made it unstable,[2][19][20] according to a GameSpy.com reviewer, who asserted that "Smart consistently overrates his own products and his own abilities."
In 2003 Gamespy named it the 19th most overrated game of all time due to the hype Derek produced with his extremely ambitious game play promises that he would ultimately be unable to fulfill.[27]
I know you generalize a lot... yeah sure "all of us"...
So you want to play the good father who teaches us how the world really is/how to troll/do things right? But the truth is that the world doesn't resolve around you even if you would like it that way.

All of that could be true, at least to varying degrees of probability. I'm just not sure why someone would use such a method to defraud so many people, right in the public eye. I mean all promises, failures, wrong doing, etc.. would be rather plain to see in the end. Surely there are less public ways to run a massive scam.

Maybe we should start a new KS to get funds to have a debate between DS and CR. I know i would pay for that. I bet DS would be all for it. :-D
what does Battlecruiser 3000AD have to do with this game?
It's simple really, he destroyed the one by trying to create it, the other he wants to destroy because he can't create it.
CR created Battlecruiser 3000AD?
I did not know that, anyway, hasnt SC been late for everthing, hasnt SC been spending more time marketing then producing? what other kind of evidence do you need that this is clearly a wait and see product.

We all know that linking to another site without specifics is "smart" talk for yet another "I have no actual proof".
Obviously you didn't check the link, it lists 15, most of which are linked for further information. I think on that argument at least, he managed to answer it fairly definitively, if you can dispute that those companies aren't as stated, then, that would also be interesting. Othwerise i think you will just have to admit you lost that particular argument.
I didn't ask for a list of 15 names affiliated with Cloud Imperium.
I asked what companies had been created through use of SC funds that have no relation to SC development.

Ehm, I'm not talking about how you earned money through broken software and broken promises.
I'm talking about the game being a complete failure in terms of what you promised it would be - and how it was barely holding together even years post release.
I dont know if you saw the video but Chris has a hard time even PLAYING his own game. Chris is the "idea" guy. I dont know if you understand what CEO's do but the CEO of a hospital does not contribute a "significant" amount of time to the patients. In fact, he doesnt devote any time to actual patients.
The core of the physics engine/flight model, for one.
I also think you are wrong about this. According to Star Citizen videos, Pete Mackay is the flight model game designer and John Pritchett is the physics programmer. If as you say Chris did all this significant work then why have these two guys on staff and doing the video when we all know Chris loves to be in the videos.
Bottom line is you have NO proof or evidence to support your claim that Chris has done a "significant" part of the coding. You just have your opinion that you so desperately want to be right. Its actually kind of sad how you struggle against the facts and revert to name calling.
I know for a fact that this is false. From what I know - from people who were there and still there - Chris's "contributions" in terms of gamedev, is like comparing a script kiddie to the guy who writes the operating system.
NOTE: Anyone who watched his impromptu attempt to play his own game, have all the answers they need to this question.
Just ignore him. It's their usual I-want-to-believe revisionist bullshit.
I'm definitely not going to say Roberts had any part of writing actual code for SC, but "inside information" doesn't mean much from the guy who said that "super computers" were being used for SC onstage demos, and who also said that CryEngine could somehow utilize "16" cpu cores.
By the way Derek, when is LOD official launch? You said the game was done back in October. Also, would you mind letting us know who the next "target for truth" is going to be after Roberts? I want to start doing my homework now.
You know I have a quick question. Derek Smart whom many of the SC anti-fans champion, has an unfinished, and much maligned game on Steam Early Access right now. In another thread many of you same posters joined in to crucify Adrian Banniga for accepting kickstarter [sorry brainfart] Steam Early Access money for what became an unfinished and much maligned game. While I know Smart founded the game on private investment money, now that the game is on sale on Steam Early Access, I fail to see a difference between either games as both people are accepting money for unfinished products that are in a pretty rough state. If one is considered fraud and theft, why not the other.
And keep in mind I don't consider what either is doing to be fraud or theft as no one is holding a gun to anybodies head and making them buy into either game. I'm just confused at the disparity why one developer is championed while the other is demonized.
Thoughts?
1) You don't know jack shit about my business.
2) I have never - ever - taken "private investment money" at my company, for any game. LOD is no different. I own my company and my games 100%, and continue to fund them 100% by me and from sales of prior works. That's what being in business for almost THREE DECADES gets you.
3) The "much maligned" game you're talking about, is more of a game NOW than Star Shitizen will ever be. Plus, like ALL my games, it WILL be finished and DELIVERED exactly as promised; regardless of who likes it or doesn't.
4) The game being in Early Access is not about money or it would be cheaper to get in. Get your facts right. And nobody asked anyone to buy it. And I'm certainly not selling JPEG of ships (which may or may not end up as designed and paid for by backers).
5) Comparing the current state of LOD to SC is more obnoxious thing that I keep reading. This despite the fact that while SC is still a tech demo, LOD currently has over 90% of it's features completed; and working. But since YOU guys brought it up, enjoy. This is LOD as it is TODAY, RIGHT NOW.
It always warms my heart when you say Star Citizen, cultists lose their collective minds and say "Derek Smart" or "Line Of Defense". As if comparing an indie effort to a $110M "game", built by a team that was over 500 at one point, is somehow worthy of discussion.
Your nothing but a Shyster and that comes from your own words.
No, I can't agree with a lot of that. For one, you can't just strip people of shares in the company they created. It's not IPO, so there's no legal method that I know of for doing something like that. I also would never be okay with taking portions of a company away from someone who built it. Agree with him or not, Chris made SC what it is. If it's successful, with or without him, he needs to benefit as the progenitor of the project.
Actually you're wrong. It can be done. It's legal. And I've done it.
What you do is you offer them a deal and either buy their shares for a small amount based on what the company is valued at the time, or the give it up in exchange for non-prosecution of any uncovered wrong-doing.
And this has nothing to do with people who created a company keeping their shares. It's about the survival of the company and a plan toward a clean slate.
It happens ALL the time. Founders leave without any part of the company. And in most cases, if they refuse to take such deals, that's when very bad things happen.
All true yet the whiteknights can't see it. Any logical person should see the problems with CR's business practices.
Personally I believe IF Roberts was on the up and up he would be right in the middle of this arguing and showing how SC isn't a scam.

No dev in their right mind would get involved in these kinds of conversations, up and up or not. Far too many would view it as unprofessional, those who actually want to sell games stay far away from things like this. IF the environment was similar to CU I could see that being a possibility, but as it is? Nah
I'll give DS this... he doesn't care about such things nor perceptions of him that result from it. That's admirable to some extent, not exactly good for his gaming portfolio though..
