I think he's saying Aussies are crazy! I wouldn't take that Razor.

To the rest of the crowd: I got 4:1 odds on Razor, who wants some action?

In no Holy text (Koran, torah, Holy Bible or otherwise) does it tell the exact date of the end of the world....for the exception of Mayan ancient holy texts and their calendar which states December 23, 2012 (that is an entirley different thread altogether)

The ones who attempts to make a date is always wrong and are not considered scholarly among theological circles. In fact, you stated thousands have attempted to come up with a date when in fact only about 30 have done so and failed.

The most recent being Charles Russell who claim the end of the world will happen in 1914.

No one in Christian circles spouts off a date for that would be absurd. Christ even stated not even he would know the time...

However, one thing is certain. Every religious circle has some form of another of three things (meaning there are three things that EVERY faith shares eiher in holy text or in other readings)

    1. The Flood
    2. A Savior(s) of sorts
    3. End of the world

I would not nessarily call people who believe in such a form of the future as weak minded. Many people believe an asteroid will destroy us or even aliens....why not our own hands? In Christian teaching, Armageddon is NOT the end of the world....according to Christian teachings, God will come down to judge right before we are about to blow ourselves into oblivion. Is it correct? I believe it is...but who knows? That's where faith kicks in...and not weak mindedness

    Also...not to brag....but I will ::::02::

I have a Ph.D in Roman Antiquities and Ancient Church Theology (60 credits), a Masters of Divinity in Pastoral Counseling (120 credits....longest Master Degree in Graduate Education), and a Bachelor's of Science in Theology and Apologetics (120 credits).

In all of those I have taken well over 60 credits in Philosophy and 32 credits in Ancient languages (Greek, Latin, Hebrew, Aramaic, certain local nomadic arabian dialects, and German and French...not ancient but required for my Ph.D entry level examination)

So out of all of that I can safely assume that I am not Weak-Minded and yes I hold the Book of Revelation to be true.

That's what I believe and Im not forcing on anyone...just simply stating that there are intelligent, non-followers of conformistism, and bright people who believe in something that you just may find nutty

People who have to create conspiracy and hate threads to further a cause lacks in intellectual comprehension of diversity.

If hes saying 3 hours is too much time to waste reading this superstitious conjecture then I agree 100%. However I really enjoy a good debate on religion and I prefer to come at it from an informed perspective, rather than adopt the same attitude as 99% of people, which is to have a strong opinion on something based on what their parents told them or what they suppose from watching TV. I prefer to research the things I dont beleive in and expose myself to as much information that is contrary to my point of view as possible.

If hes saying that 3 hours is not enough time to study Gog and Magog and that it is an insult to a complex topic that some people devote thier lives to. I also strongly agree. However I have to work, play and feed my family. I dont have the luxury of living a monastic existence where I could spend all day every day hunched over a book swaying back and forth and chanting uninteligibly(sp), in order to form a complete perspective regarding this fiction.

Id just like to know which it is.

I follow your posts on this stuff and Im aware of your depth of study. It dwarfs mine.

The dates thing is one I used to make a point... you agree its been an issue... so do I. Making dates serves to do nothing but undermine the already shakey credibility of the arguments based around end of days teachings.

The date as far as Christianity is concerned is actually pretty well stated as you would know.

Rev 20:6-10 Blessed and holy is he who shares in the first resurrection! Over such the second death has no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and they shall reign with him a thousand years.

And when the thousand years are ended, Satan will be loosed from his prison,

and will come out to deceive the nations which are at the four corners of the earth, that is, Gog and Magog, to gather them for battle; their number is like the sand of the sea.

And they marched up over the broad earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city; but fire came down from heaven and consumed them,

and the devil who had deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulphur where the beast and the false prophet were, and they will be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

    Ref : http://www.iras.ucalgary.ca/~volk/sylvia/GogAndMagog.htm

The only point of conjecture is when the "thousand years" starts and finishes. Of course making that clear would not suit christianity as it would allow a measure and a test of the veracity of these predictions. The faith is of course not silly enough to allow that to happen.

I use the term "weak minded" more as a description than an insult. "Many people who take all this in use it as an excuse to stop thinking. They just write all the complex questions of  life off to "gods will" and it saves them having to consider things any further. Another description might be "comfortably minded", in other words they are comfortable with the assumption that its all being handled by someone else and they can just get back to watching days of our lives and arguing with people like me without having a clue about thier own belief structure.

As for asteroids... well again science offers mathmatical possibilities of the liklehood of asteroids stiking the earth. It combines this with proven history of previous strikes to predict that a cataclysmic asteroid impact is actually a reasonable probability. Nothing mystical about that, no faith required.

    http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/solarsystem/asteroid_2030_001103.html

    http://www.jerrypournelle.com/reports/jerryp/hammer.html

What is the mathmatical probability of revelations coming to pass ? What basis is this probability founded on ?

What happens to Revalations if the asteroid gets us first ?

See they are the questions I like!

I get up in the morning, organise my family, goto work and then its time to start thinking big thoughts. I have done it all my life. I actually feel a bit sorry for people who dont think that thinking these big thoughts is important.

There is nothing more important than knowing the answers to these questions!

The thing I really dont like about religion is it natuarally surpresses peoples willingness to think these big thoughts. Big thoughts are not required when you substitute them with faith.

You are of course the exception that proves the rule!image

I would LOVE to hear one argument to change my views. In all my years of searching and researching, exposing myself to every religious argument I can find, I always HOPE that someone will convince me of the existence of something beyond the "real". I would love to beleive! So far I have heard or seen nothing.

I'll disagree with your point of view. In my experience I find people of faith to be much more philosphical then other segments of the community. One of my favorite activities is discussing religion and science with my good friend Jason, who's a doctor and devoted conservative jew.

As for Armegedon, I never viewed it as the end of the world, but as a continuation. Kinda like a rebooting of the world, lol.

Still, I'm hedging my bets on humanity creating its own disaster. Teflon anyone?

    Philosophical yes...

    Enquiring... rarely

You are hardly likely to see a conservative religious person sitting down to read Darwins works...

However its my firm belief that the inteligent person will have the bible and Darwin on their bookshelf next to each other.

It is my hope one day that humans will combine and embrace both religion and science, but in the words of ozzy "im just a dreamer". Im pretty sure that if some act of divine destruction doesnt get us, our own stupidity will, read my sig below for another good quote from Einstien.

I think it's the objective of your past self to make you cringe.

Actually we got a couple of billions years now before the universe is destroy. The sun would die out and the universe will be so cold that it will suck itself in a big black hole and disappear.

Sony just recently patented that mind-projection technology that they want to use on consoles. A hop, skip, and a jump, and let it get into SOE's hands who can send it through the internet, you'll have the end of the world. Granted, it's not the typical armaggedon where everyone is dead. But they're not alive.

I haven't read the entire thread so this may of been mentioned already. According to the Mayans, who while granted were just people, they were pretty damned smart people. The world is going to end December 21st 2012, which would be the day before my 30th birthday... I knew I'd never live to see 30, and I'm taking you all with me! ::::40::

I have been debating this with myself since I was 15. Like some you guys I have been searching for something to believe. A while back I found this article about an amazing boy who claims there will be huge disasters in 2009 and a bigger one in 2012. It is a good read here is the link.

    http://english.pravda.ru/science/19/94/377/12257_Martian.html

For some reason I didn't have a hard time believing this. Is it just me?

I can definately believe a child can come up with something like this, children are like sponges and soak up everything that they hear. If he heard lots of tales and stuff his mind tries to find a meaning and a connection to everything.

After this I definately dont believe that any of it has truthful meaning

"-Boris, tell us why do people get sick?

-Sickness comes from people's inability to live properly and be happy. You must wait for you cosmic half. One should never get involve and mess up other peoples" destinies."

I know why I caught a cold, and it definately wasn't from not being happy or not living properly. Was from a germ, or virus or whatever be it :P.

    are you serious??

The sun isnt the only star and its not a big one at all and by the time it colapses we will be living on other planets(humans havent even existed for a billion years and we got this far think about a few billion more years were we will be.)

colapsing stars couse black holes so the tempurature has nothing to do with black holes. Stars and galaxies aretoo widely spread out to pull verything into one black hole. Not all stars become black holes some turn into nebulas (i think their clled nebulas not sure) then join with more gas and dust to form new stars. Also scientists believe that the universe is still expanding since the big bang becouse it looks as though planets are further apart then they ever were and the big bang has been going for a few billion years and doesnt look like its going to stop, and it might stop expanding and never colapse again or it might collapse in more than a few billion years.
