imageGDC 2016 - Hands On Preview of Brad McQuaid's Magnum Opus

Pantheon had its first showing to the media at GDC today and we were lucky enough to be there right away to check things out. The game is coming along nicely and really heralds back to the classic MMOs we love with a fantastic push into the future of how MMO are made. We got to watch a solid demo as well as see some of the new features that will impact characters and their interaction with the environment.

    I have high hopes for this one, just hope this game does not have slow & clunky combat. Old style MMORPG'S are fine, but leave out the horrible bits plz ;)

    Nice article! It was really refreshing to see Visionary Realms keep their promise to make a game for old school gamer's have been begging for. My only fear is players not doing the research on this game and will bad mouth it not being a WoW clone or something completely different from the current mmo's.

    The murder.Death.Kill. seems fine and old school as some would say. What I want to see is where the development is on things not associated with combat. I wanna see the crafting and such.
    What MMO has no crafting....?

    It is one of the standard features.

    Depends on whether the crafting system will be good.
    By "good" you actually mean "I like", do you? They are not the same tho...

    No. I mean will it be collect X items and push a button or will it be a minigame type thing or a hybrid or what? Just a simple inquiry. Some people just like to craft. If I do not like the system in place who cares? I am just curious what it will be like. Fair question. I did pay money to Pantheon and I do support it.

    Ok, so you mean "I like"...well, that does not make the system "good".

    Liked what I saw for the most part. Little concerned the fact the people who made the game died so much and they had an exp loss on the death penalty. Seems to harsh for low level as most convenience abilities are not in there at low level, like res, teleport and corpse summons. IMO this will drive off to many players and stop people from taking risks to learn the game. I think there is enough challenges in the game as is, exp loss on the death penalty needs to be rethought.

    Good luck with that hope, the old school crowd who wants this game loves that combat style. Expect slow combat in this one.

    Way to generalize. People who enjoy action combat don't "play for a month then quit" and people were game-hopping before action combat became popular in 2012. So get off your high horse right now. You clearly don't enjoy action combat and that's fine, but those of us that do are just as devoted to our games as those that enjoy other things.

    I agree with you that people like different styles and that has no influence on how long they play a said game. I also see where he is coming from. Being an old school mmo lends itself to a tabtarget format more so than an action one. that being said, I think we can see even in pre alpha that it is firmly in the tab target camp. Which, personally, I prefer and would think many of a game like this fan's would enjoy more than an action format. Maybe I am wrong though.



    I agree that it looks tab target but action combat does not define a game's style. You can make an old school style game with action combat. There's no reason why not. TERA is a good example of a game that is firmly in the action combat camp but feels and plays much more like a tab target game in a lot of ways than other action combat games. So like anything else, it just depends on how a game and it's combat is designed. But the style of combat doesn't dictate a game's overall design. Only the developers do.

    It is kind of comforting that every new bit of info on this game just reinforce the feeling that i will be staying as far from this game as i can. That tells me they have a solid vision and is sticking to it. I admit the world is gorgeous but i had my fill of "classic" MMO´s back in the UO days. Way to many avenues for people to be posterior primates and that always brings out the best in people.

    But i am glad that people who like more retro-style mmo´s will have a home, and it looks to be a well crafted one.

    This reads like a sponsored post. The environment looked great but that combat was just so slow. Nowadays we have the tech to support more intuitive combat.

    Intuitive: means having the ability to understand or know something without any direct evidence or reasoning process.

    This game is for people who like a reasoning process in their combat. Thought over twitch.
