gamers used to be an innovative crowd. I dont think they are anymore, maybe developers and the industry itself can be but gamers are no longer innovators or early adopters.
because of my age somewhere around 100% of my facebook friends are not gamers. but they are talking about VR
I can't say I have any interest in VR either this year or in future years. I just don't find what it offers to be of any interest. I don't even like playing in first person in games we have already so the idea of taking that idea even further with something like VR is the exact opposite of what I want. I enjoy my third person view in games and I'll continue to play games that way.
I am going to wait several years before I get my VR kit.
I do not care that much about the price which is currently quite high. For me, it is more about lack of quality games I could use it for. Also, the tech is still new and I expect its significant improvement in the upcoming years.
I think your second point is a good one. games though..oh my god....so many, so many good ones too.
but I can blame anyone for wanting to wait at least 12 months after offical release before thinking about it.

I'll buy one (prob OcRift) the minute something I really want to play shows up. Admittedly, I almost bust a nut when I heard that they had a CCG coming, I was picturing a realization of a Yugioh type game. But then I saw what it was (dragon front) and my heart sank - complete garbage.
As for watching TV/movies - that's something I did with my mobile phone for a bit, but it's so inconvenient at this point in time. If I download a movie from Google play, it streams from the play store (I'm guessing to to check authorization) so I can't view it in VR. So I'm left with downloading or ripping a DVD/Blu-ray and both of those take time. At that point, I have to weigh the benefit of watching in VR vs just putting one on my 60" plasma. So far the TV wins every time. Not only do I not have to wear a headset, but I can snuggle my dog and have snacks. If I try to have snacks with my dog around while wearing a headset, what happens is that the dog gets the snacks unless I'm sitting at a table. So I can't chill on the couch without that little hippie getting his nose all up in my face (well mouth, cause snack breath is delicious and doggie approved).

I'm not surprised, consider the track record of disappointment in the gaming industry, vr is an expensive buy in too, it just doesn't lend itself to the hype a trully reputable peice of hardware should have. The possibilities are endless, but let's just see how far it's come.

it LITERALLY cost the EXACT same price as the monitor I bought 2 years ago.

VR gaming doesn't hold much magic for me. Its not just the hardware concept that bothers me however. As shallow and gimmicky as the game industry has become, while many think VR could be a new height for amazing games, I'm willing to bet most of them will just be more half assed crappy ones, at more cost to the end gamer.
I have to say the new Pornhub VR looks interesting. I'd like to see that in action ... uh ... for research purposes of course.
I do think there is now a good chance that VR will be more popular outside of gaming then in gaming.
With that said, Elite Dangerous in VR is very awesome. The DK2 needs a bit more resolution which the CV does so yeah...mega hype for me

chances for VR really take off, games for it, waht it will really mean to a player experience, if is the same shit just with some tv glued on your head people will hardly care, only thing for now I can see the VR working well enough is simulators in with you sit and drive/pilot it, anything more action oriented will lack the feeling the VR was supose to give.
also people who is really willing to spend 700-800 on a tv head set for somethign who we are not sure how many games will ahve support to it?
gamers are not the most inovative, they are just the ones who bought consoles or pcs becasue of a certain game, I remember when I was a kid the main reason I wanted a Snes was becasue of the top gear, anything else I did get for that console was a plus, what I really wanted was that game, same with any other console I get my hands on was because I wanted a game in that console, so if you have a lacking of games for such device it will not sell, also remember on all that extras normally was sold, if VR will be like that power glove only time will tell, but we need games for it if it want to have a chance.
It's too expensive. I can find a lot of things to do with $600-800 that don't involve me sitting in my living room with a headset on.
You don´t say. =P
Then again i say the same thing about people who buy elite champagne or just have to go the "fancy" clubs... We all have different views on what makes something worth. But you are right in assuming that this wave is purely for early adopters and tech-heads. It might say consumer product but in the same way a bottle of cristal is a consumer product. =P
I don't even like wearing a headset for teamspeak. Can't stand it.
I'm in the same boat. In addition to headsets driving me up a wall, I also can't stand the 3D glasses, even the light ones - and I'm in the unfortunate group that has to wear glasses, so to me it's an even bigger pain. I have 0 interest in wearing all of that VR gear.
Can we all just skip this phase of the tech evolution and go straight to holos? Or how about some better/more evolved peripherals?
I am but honestly $500+ for a VR Headset which they made a quick change from V1 to V2 I think they will go to V3 pretty fast no point in buying at this point until final release.

A game, or a movie, or TV show, a play, a concert, or even a book - these things can all pull you in and drown out the "real" world...
If they are good.
Don't need to wear a headset, or 3D glasses, or motion controls, or photo realistic 4K 120FPS anything.
All just a gimmick, just a show. To "dazzle" you into believing what you are seeing/experiencing is better than it actually is.
That EVE:Valkyrie game or whatever? Still not going to be as good as Tie-Fighter.
It's all just a gimmick.
