AoC was a great game up until you left the first city, then the bugs and lack of voice over and badly designed quest and more more more made it go down hill.

My most disappointing is i cant really decent, they are WAY TOO MUCH games that have disappointed upon release. Game companies just rushing releases to cash grab and move on to next project or dlc. gg

SWTOR I was all hyped up at launch, for the story lines. I love Star Wars, i loved KOTOR. This was going to be a new KOTOR, but online. There is not much interesting story in it. It's all: go there, do that. It's the most on-rails game i've ever played. Got bored with it before reaching level cap.

Haven't had very high expectations for any mmo besides wow and gw2 so i've not really been dissapointed in any.

The biggest dissapointment for me would be Spore.

Wow .. it ruined the industry

MMO- Archeage, for all the usual reasons.  Or maybe Star Trek and/or Star Wars, because I like both the IPs but not the games.

Other- Kind of a hard question.  I have bought a lot of bad games.  It probably would be some random Nintendo game when all I had to go on before buying was the box.

    MMO and/or Otherwise?

For an MMO for me it would be Age of Conan -- Such a great IP. Just not what I expected. People talk about the game 1-20 like it was a much better game than when you left Tortage. Yet I was not impressed even there. It just did not live up to the legendary status the IP has.

For a non MMO game -- Spore -- The game was presented like it would be one of the deepest games ever. Creating life and finding ways to allow for that life to grow and expand, learning to communicate with other alien life. All amid a sometimes hostile world. The idea was better than the execution. It was buggy, the DRM was a mess and the game just got boring after only a few minutes, or less. Really let down by that one.

    Vanguard: Saga of Heroes.

Expected much from a fmr EQ dev team.

    The launch was beyond horrible.
    The game even more.

Guess they were already said: Spore, AoC and Hellgate: London.

Let's play Fallen Earth (blind, 300 episodes)

Let's play Guild Wars 2 (blind, 45 episodes)

There have been a few disappointments:

    ArcheAge
    Warhammer Online
    Age of Conan
    Mortal Online
    SWTOR
    Xsyon

Diablo 3 (at first, but I think they've made a pretty good game of it now)

But the number 1 disappointment of all time for me is Earthrise:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RQCNmKAvEJc&ebc=ANyPxKpV7hgWmwW22s2Q6F3eqh-ilWMpnTEfCxAYmK2m_5MI0f3R2kshvBgpqscU-M3pq46x0_IxU8Uvz6ytLktulo08cTHrmQ

I didn't get a refund and the game was buggy as hell and often unplayable, so that's why it's the worst.

All the other games I listed above, I at least had some fun before I realized they were not up to par. I thought Earthrise was going to be sci fi Darkfall.

It's funny, a lot of the games listed I really liked.  At least for a while.

I level capped a couple in SWTOR.  Yeah, some of the questing was boring, but I loved the ship combat, the cinematics, and some of the fights.  And, I was in a big active guild and that fixes a lot of woes for most games.

Age of Conan was fine.  Until you got to level 60, and there was no real content beyond that except dailies.  That would have been fine, except the level cap was EIGHTY!  Talk about the grind... I level capped one, but just could not get myself to do it again.

    ***************************

My biggest disappointment was definitely Hellgate:London.  I was an early alpha tester in that game, and was involved in a lot of the early development.  It had so much promise... but there was so much broken in it.  When they said we were moving to early beta, a lot of us testers thought they were joking.  The game was barely out of pre-alpha; there was a lot to fix, and a lot of content that flat out was not working!

We soldiered on, reporting bugs and making suggestions.  They finally got all of the catastrophic stuff fixed and all of the content working, although it was still really, really buggy.  In my mind the game was finally out of pre-alpha.

And then they announced they were releasing in a month!

    What?

Once again, we thought they were joking....

Even against the tester's recommendations, they released that buggy slop of a game to the public.  And it went as expected.

This game was my most disappointing because it had SO MUCH DAMN POTENTIAL.  It could have been huge, and all it would have taken was another 4-6 months in the oven.

The world is going to the dogs, which is just how I planned it!

Clearly it is [newest game everyone seems excited about]!  B)

Kidding aside, a few people mentioned Dark & Light. I had completely forgotten about that one, but I recall I was really looking forward to what was being promised at the time.

Also, while not a "game release" per se, I was pretty underwhelmed by the Icarna. I really think EvE is a great game, and the promise of what could be with that expansion was something cool to think about. I haven't played in a while, so maybe one of the newer expansions has iterated on it, but for something so long discussed, it seemed incomplete and just....underwhelming..I don't have a better word for it...

Mine was Archeage and Vanguard. I was in both betas and enjoyed myself a lot. When both were released the opening week was a disaster. Vanguard was full of bugs having me lose 5 levels on a character, zoning bugs etc. Archeage, well.. blah.

    All time?

Battlecruiser 3000 AD and Masters of Orion 3.

Both of those games were infamous for their crappiness.

    Dishonorable mention: Simcity 3000.

    Mass Effect 3

Mass Effect 2 was one of my favorite games of all time. It was a better shooter than Mass Effect 3 and a better-designed RPG than Mass Effect 1. When the third game came around and drug its franchise through the mud, I was stunned. The cast of teammate characters was at its worst. The story injected fanfiction into its eyeballs like heroin. The ending was only the cherry on top of this game's plethora of problems.

    Kingdoms of Amalur

In some ways, this little-RPG-that-could was fantastic. No other RPG has ever had better combat. Few RPGs have a more compelling approach to classes. The setting was vibrant and colorful. Unfortunately, this game failed in every other way. Difficulty was non-existent, trivializing the excellent combat. The story was both uninspired and poorly executed - exactly what one would expect from R.A. Salvatore. The character models were eerie, even unintentionally creepy and bared more than a passing resemblance to Troll dolls. The game was unfortunately overly linear. Most of the side quests lacked compelling stories. Bosses were mostly uninteresting. The game's great potential was just missed all around.

    Star Wars: Battlefront EA

To be fair to this one, my expectations weren't terribly high for this one. EA fucks things like a porn star in heat. Still, Star Wars: Battlefronts 1 & 2 were among the best shooters of all time. What we got wasn't just a bad Battlefronts game - it wasn't one at all. Replacing class-based strategical shooting with casual gunplay that would make Call of Duty blush was bad. Removing a campaign while releasing a shoddy multiplayer with limited content and borderline non-existent customization was worse.

    The Secret World

This unique modern horror MMO has a fantastic story, unique quests, great characters, and a very customizable class system. Unfortunately, it fails in every other conceivable way. Poor combat, obnoxious mob design, and some of the worst PvP in the genre do not make for a solid product.

    Guild Wars 2

This is the only game on my list that I actually enjoy despite its significant faults. A game can be both good and a disappointment at the same time, however. When one promises everything one loved about Guild Wars 1, that should make the end product bear at least a passing similarity to the original game. What we got was a game that had slipshod PvP, non-functional WvW, and a mere fraction of the original's class & skill depth. It is fortunate that the game has enough strong points to draw in a fanbase on its own merits.

Guild Wars 2 without a doubt. Terrible lvling experience, terrible dungeons, terrible pvp. Didnt enjoy a single element of this game.

actually the elder scrolls will NOT work as mmo. quite simple. we don't have the engines to run that yet.
and maybe, just maybe, you guys should read up on games better :pleased:

seriously, imo the main prob nowadays is that everyone reads their wishes into upcomming games, and completely ignores all news and given facts.

/Warning!  SWTOR rant ahead!  Proceed with caution if you have sensitive feelings towards this game!

I detest this game with every ounce of my available hatred pool dedicated to video games.  I hate it so much that ET for Atari looks like Morrowind by comparison.  If I was big daddy DIRNSA himself, I would use my available resources fry every server that hosts this utter piece of garbage.  Then I would Watergate any backup copies.

I could make an entire youtube channel dedicated to the ridiculous and stupid parts of this game and I wouldn't run out of material to make weekly videos for a year.

We need a new Star Wars MMO that's not utter crap, but unfortunately we won't get one as long as this crime against humanity is still active.

    /end rant
I could not agree more.  All of your points are spot on in this post.

If you want a new idea, go read an old book.

An easy question to answer, for me:

    MMO: Final Fantasy XIV (1.0)

    Other: Batman Arkham Knight

  • DeepfallDeepfall Member UncommonPosts: 51
    1) Dark and Light
    2) EarthRise
    3) SWG: NGE
    4) FFXIV 1.0

yep, especially if you concider what made duke nukem great.
    a fully supported coop mode.

it was quite a good game but from duke, it was about best or fail.

Given what I played... top 3 off the top of my head I've experienced personally MMO wise (going with the site)

    Guild Wars 2

I actually never bought into the hype for the game. For me, I figured it would be a decent exeprience for the cost and preoccupy some time on the side given its B2P nature. Playing it, it was easily the worst AAA MMo for me I played. While I've played other MMos that were 'meh' at best, it just was the first that left me after 2 hours bored and wanting to quit... which for someone who grinds hardcore on launch for 12+ hours typically it is really sad.

The combat in the game was bad, I still to this day don't understand how anyone finds the combat to be good. I don't think its the worst ever, but its mediocre at best if you get beyond the slippery nature of the controls and lack of impact. It lacked much depth that meant most classes involved very few button presses and little thought behind it. It's storyline went anywhere from 'pretty entertaining' to cringe-worthy horrible. The leveling process was painfully boring, with hearts in particular being an example of how to devolve quests into a worst state (which funny enough wow copied in WOD and was quickly hated there as well by most). Graphically I thought it was fine, but the combat in particular ruined it beyond being saved for me no matter how hard I tried to get use to it.

    Wildstar

In truth, I actually love this game. While its questing was lack luster at times and the leveling experience was 'meh' it still had good bits and the combat system was amazing. The difficulty it had I felt was great to see in general. It really had a lot going for it with its potential. The issue comes though when the devs heard the cry for 'old school' mmo difficulty... and for some reason they felt that tedium was something people enjoyed.

The games entire focus on being difficult was a bane to the game. Even simple dungeons were difficult to get through for most groups. Its difficulty curve went from a 1 to an 11 with little as far as ease to help players pick up and get better at the game. They went far to hardcore on difficulty without giving a progressively more difficult curve of content for people to work through and learn. They put far to much tedius work to do anything in the game, an element of 'old school' people didn't enjoy. They tried to hard to copy the old formula without advancing it. Adding in the fact the raids were locked behind a very very very lengthy and time consuming attunement, it practically killed off the chance for the game to get any traction. Its a shame too because the game itself was amazing and if it had taken away a lot of the tedious things and had a gradual difficulty curve, I'm almost certain the game would of done vastly better.

    WoW: Warlords of Draenor

I'll admit it, right off the bat the idea for the expansion seemed incredibly stupid. The whole 'alterante timeline' idea is one of the most bankrupt ideas to toss into any storyline. Messing with time isn't always bad, but its a very picky affair. Despite this, i played the beta and actually fond it fun. The leveling was incredible! Getting to end game however... it was quickly apparent it wasn't going to be such a grand time.

The game's launch itself was a bit rocky though at least stabilized eventually acting as the worst wow launch since TBC (though fortunately it was better at least then that by a decent margine). Blizzard was pretty much in 100% greed mode giving their players absolutely jack all worth of content. Raids were the only thing they gave players and expected them to do Appexis grind as a 'activity' that had somehow made daily quests taht some people found to be boring to be a great joy in comparison. The world felt no sense of progression as they didn't bother to do much of anything but push the raids out, giving the least amount of content they could. While the raids themselves were overall good (granted no where near the best) it was still quite limited compared to past expansions.

They didn't give the players anything, the only thing really given to the general playerbase was 1 zone (a zone meant for launch but pushed back, then repurposed) that had MORE appexis dailies that players loathed! it was an utter *** show. Worst off the expansion was even MORE expensive, with blizzard pushing it to last only 1 year to pump expansions faster while nickle and diming the playerbase giving jack shit worth of  content.  They gave mounts that were simple recolors for most of the expansion rewarding players with jack shit while pumping out new cash shop mounts constantly to nickel and dime players with the cool mounts that SHOULD of been in the game. It really was a disgusting show of greed. The expansion itself pretty much cemented away any chance WoW has of being big ever again as it successfully killed the nostalgia from most people and the trust to blizzard fully.

It felt like some giant test trying to see how much they can get away with ripping people off before they got an outcry in response. Given the fact their sub numbers had fallen drastically to the point of being bellow the peek of Vanilla (and likely to record lows given we knew the numbers after they realized they had to hide them) I'd say their experiment is something very costly. Wow was going to be in general decline, with an occasional spike of players here and there, but this expansion is one of the best examples of how to ruin the nostalgia of a game.

For me was Black Desert Online - The pop up system drive me crazy .I have a pretty solid PC and still on High End mode i still see things near me change shape and light. I know this is a small thing for some but for me is immersion killer. In the rest the game it's pretty good. Now people gonna say '' ..but it's a seamless world and etc etc bla bla bla '' .I don't care i don't like it's distracting me too much to enjoy the game for what it is.

I really had to say WoW on release. I was a big Warcraft fan, and I was already into City of Heroes. I was worried that I would liek 2 MMORPGs, and that I'd have to decide. CoH spoiled me in it's character creation, fun combat and purposeful missions from the start. I barely players WoW a day before dropping it. I'm not into the typical RPG quests system. It took the burning crusade with it's new races and more interesting starter zones to get me to play the game.
