As someone who has worked in national security for 14 years now, I'll stick with Windows 7.
The issues I have with 10 will be ironed out by third party developers eventually, but I value my privacy more than Windows 10 offers.
You can manually lock down Win10 to be more secure than Win7.
You cannot. In fact there are several background processes running that are constantly sending information back to MS, and if you attempt shut them down, then your computer will reboot. The OS will cease to function if you attempt to disable them.
Considering MS took money from homeland security to give them warrant-less access to our personal and private computers, will be a cold day in hell before I ever let windows 10 anywhere near my home. I am still pro constitution and anti nazi police state.
WOW - way to smoke that paranoia cig. They DID NOT take any money, where did it say that? MS has been fighting HMS tooth and nail. Hence they were the first to offer anonymous web surfing system in their browsers.
Do you know what even you are saying? You don't, obviously. Look at MS's record on fighting giving information to the government before you really spout garbage.
Any info, they collect has to do with your PC and it's hardware not anything else (and you can turn it off). As far as it is concerned, you already have a footprint if you use the internet.
Do you have an Android or iPhone? They can trace you faster with that then you can with Win 10.

I've disabled stuff in privacy settings, then checked back months later to find out that it had somehow been re-enabled without my permission. So I hope it's understandable that I'm somewhat skeptical of the "you can disable that" claims.
you never know what will be switched back without your knowledge. For example. a patch may reset somethings. It would be naive to think they don't to this.

I think Android - on mobile phones - is probably the most popular OS for running Steam - unless people are simply downloading the app and never using it, always possible.
On PC though Win10 - no real surprise. And as the deadline for the free upgrade nears it makes sense that the % increases especially as all but critical support for Win7 has been announced.
Like others I have installed it on multiple computers - no trouble. One item of hardware had been an issue on Win8.1 - the Intel driver was supposed to work but was dodgy; Win10 initially didn't recognise the hardware either but accepted the driver and last I checked it now seems to be embedded within it.
Yes there are background processes that if ended will halt the os - just as there are in Win7 and Win8. And yes the Win10 updates are mandatory - the majority of which are security updates. And knowing how "pathetic" some people are out there when it comes to such things about time to is all I can say. The more that can be done to stop the propagation of viruses the better.
And - irony of ironies - if you run Steam in "online" mode you are sending info "backwards and forward" to Steam !!!!!!!!

exactly when you mod a games files and they patch it sends a copy of the updated file from their servers to your computer so naturally your modding is stripped away and you have to do it all over again. This is paranoia to me. Every major update to windows is going to make you have to re-mod your settings if they change even one line of code in the same files you changed. There is terrorism being traced by smartphones not computers and plenty of insane sites up to date that are anon. I highly doubt MS or the government would give a crap what your pc has on it or information it sends if you are not on some watch list.
Intel's dominance is really evident in laptops. You can use years old Celeron Laptop processors and game about as well as AMD APUs near the top of their lines. It's kind of ridiculous how far ahead Intel is.
Once you move to Core iSeries CPUs, they just blow AMD away.
Anyone on a budget should not touch any of the low cost AMD Desktops/Laptops OEMs are selling, and should go for mid-range Nvidia GPUs over AMD if they're trying to save money.
The extra 1-200 is worth it as the machine will be usable for 2-3 years longer than an "equivalent" (but cheaper) AMD configuration.

Microsoft has, in the past - even the recent past - been known to masquerade non-security updates as security updates. They embedded "Get Windows 10" (GWX) in a security package in the past. There have been times when security updates have changed settings unrelated to security in other parts of the OS and caused issues.
Additionally, Microsoft has a database of Device Drivers on their servers that they send out through Windows Update. It's extremely problematic to troubleshoot issues dealing with you installing a driver from i.e. AMD and then Windows Update downloading an older version from Microsoft's cache, breaking your driver install (and CCC/AMD Control Panel). I had this issue when I updated to Windows 10. The only way to stop it is to get a tool from Microsoft (not in the OS) to opt out of that driver update.
There are probably hoards of machines out there with broken driver installs thanks to Windows Update.
Another thing is that the Updater Runs whenever it chooses and often your machine will reboot without giving you a chance to do anything about it, or anything to prevent it.
I don't think Windows 10 itself is that bad, apart from how much stuff is tied to a Microsoft Account Log-in, but there are legit issues with the way they do Windows update on the platform. It has turned legit features (driver database) into full-out griefs and productivity drains (installing old drivers over newer drivers, causing regressions and reinstitution bugs that were previously "fixed" on your machine).
That being said, I have been moving to Macs in the past couple of years. There's more desktop software development and indie action going on on that platform, and I don't game much on PCs anymore, anyways.
Notice my OS install date. Not sure I would put a lot of credence to the steam survey.

I can't imagine playing games at 1gb. Even my 2gb card was feeling not good enough. I had a GTX 660 2gb and Witcher 3 I could barely play on low settings. Granted that card ALSO had bad video ram, so there is that. But still, I can't ever go back to 2gb...4gb is sooooo much better, more stable and allows intensive modding for games that allow it (like Skyrim). I'd never want a 1gb video card, ever lol
My Skyrim, Fallout 4, Starbound and WoW + other game mods at MODDB:
Yeah surprised by that here. For instance to play the Witcher III with decent settings you gonna need at least 2gb. Same for GTA.
I managed to run both @1920x1080 on my back up pc featuring a hefty o/c'ed Asus GTX 460 768MB and a fast SSD.
GTA run quite smoothly with most settings on medium. In TW3 i had to put almost everything to low in order to maintain ~30fps but still the game looked good.

At 1920x1080 anything above 2GB is overkill. For example, The Witcher 3 at said resolution with everything on high - ultra except HairWorks utilizes about 1.6 GB of VRam.

Stopping support doesn't mean you can't continue using it for gaming. Eventually, many years down the road perhaps, but you can still play most games on Windows XP for all that matters.
As we speak there are people creating alternatives to DirectX, and those alternatives aren't very far off. If and when they become viable, playing games from any OS may not be as far off as you think.

There is little incentive for game developers to support anything but DX11 and 12 moving forwards. Windows 10 is a free upgrade for anything running Windows 7 or later, and the benefits of going to DX12 are far greater than going from DX9 to 10 or even 11.
Hardly any legitimate reasons to stay on Windows 7 have been given in this thread. It's been mostly FUD, like Microsoft taking money from HS to give access to personal data. That's patently untrue, and Microsoft is one of the richest companies in the world. They don't need donations from the US Government for anything.
Those donations would have to be in the tune of tens of billions of dollars to make a company like Microsoft, Apple, or Google even give thought to it, and the government is simply not buying information for that price. They will hack your servers before they paid up that kind of dough for it.
Additionally, Windows 10 can be used without a Microsoft Account. No one is forcing you to use Apps and services that were not available or integrated into older OSes like 7.
It's amazing how the FUD has shifted gears now that Microsoft has eliminated "not worth the upgrade cost" as the default retort for people who stay on old exploitable OSes. Windows XP is only supported for certain entities (Governments, etc.). The patches they get (pay for), you aren't going to get. Windows 7 is going to be there quite soon and will be a great playground for hackers and exploiters as a result.
I doubt anyone here can afford what it costs to get support for those Older OSes that go into sunset mode from Microsoft.

I'd say those reasons remain to be seen. At this point, I'd say the shader tech introduced with dx10 to be of greater importance at this point. Maybe DX12 will pan out with its greater support for multithreading or whatever, but lets just bare in mind it took nearly a decade for this to happen with CPUs in gaming. Even when it is finally utilized, there is really no telling how significant of an impact it will have.

Short answer no. Some do a good job when first used but Windows Update defaults settings and sometimes adds new ones that need to disabled. You can regard this transmission of data as innocuous but it will still get transmitted to Microsoft. This also includes the passwords you use to connect to wireless networks.

the questinable features are actually ENABLED by the user during the installation in the first place.
most people are plain and simple too lazy to read. windows 10 (on full controlled install) has some pages where it asks you which features shall be enabled. i am not spied in ANY bloody way, and i use it since the "beta" started.

When I installed Windows 10, I disabled a bunch of things in privacy settings. Inspired by this thread, I went to check on my privacy settings. Most of them had been re-enabled.
Admittedly, I don't have a perfect memory of exactly what I disabled months ago. But a whole bunch of things were enabled that there's no way I would have left enabled before.
Not surprised since Intel CPUs and NVIDIA GPUs have been dominant for many years.
W10, on the other hand, looks like its getting better that more people are using it. I went back to 7 a while ago. Still not sold on their privacy and auto update things. Have they addressed that? W10 itself was fine, some of MS decisions were not.
I agree. Just built my new system last Oct and love it! i5 6600K GTX 980ti Win 7 64bit

Just because Windows no longer supports an OS doesn't mean you can't use it. Pretty sure you could play most games today on XP just fine.
I run on 7 with updates off because MS tends to break OS's (seemingly on purpose) with updates after they have a new one out.
As long as there aren't any fundamental changes (like games being made in a DX version your OS doesn't support), you can use old OS's perfectly fine for a really long time.
When I installed Windows 10, I disabled a bunch of things in privacy settings. Inspired by this thread, I went to check on my privacy settings. Most of them had been re-enabled.

The number of things that you need to disable is a bit daunting, and updates, which you have no control over, often re-enable things you've disabled. There is a program that will check for you, obviously not from Microsoft, that can 'immunise' your system. Its called Spybot Search and Destroy anti beacon, just make sure you get the one from their website and not an imitation, used it on the wifes laptop, and it keeps it 'beacon free', or at least reduces it signficantly. Tbh, when you read through the list of 'features' that are in Win10, it sort of reads like a scary story you frighten the kids with, and makes you wonder if connecting your PC to the internet is all that good of an idea. In some ways it reminds me a lot of Xbox's Kinnect, which Microsoft later dropped from the Xbox package as it was detrimental to Xbox sales, whether all this 'data gathering' in Win 10 will go the same way, we can only hope. O.o
a bit surprised actually at how many MS fans there still around in the gaming market as evidenced by their being more MS specific posts then my VR posts
