I played the 7day free trial of neocron. The community was awesome. The weapons and crafting was very cool. The first day I was on 2 high level guys welcomed me to game by asking for my weapon. They then took it blueprinted it and modded it for me. So here I was a super newb with this bad ass beginner gun with a laser sight. This game is excellent, but I can't devote my time to more than one mmorpg. Not to mention the publicity for this game was horrible. I had never heard of it till I downloaded it for the free trial.
I can think of some reasons why more people dont play.
I was hyped about Neocron before beta, and participated (although not actively) in the message boards. I never got into closed beta, and by the time I cam back to the community, it was like 5 days before the end of beta, so it didnt make sense to join.
I have the retail version. Its sitting here by my desk. I have yet to play it, because I dont have a credit card, and no one i know will lend me theirs. But thats my problem.
Neocron is a European based game. It was made in Europe, the servers are in Europe, and Im guessin most of the marketing was done In Europe. I cant remember seeing one advertisement for NC over here in the US. The only place I saw any thing about it was online, and maybe the occasional PCgame mag article. I was suprised that they even sold it near me. When I go back, all ofthe copies are still on the shelf that were there since the first day of retail. I dont know what went wrong, bt maybe when they switch publishers, they can get a second chance to do more advertising.
ON the other hand, It must be kind of nice to be on servers that arent over-crowded, or to tell friends about this game that they have never heard of, only for them to find out how great it is (or is upposed to be, as Ive never played it)
I think if they do more advertisin, and offer more methods for payment (paybycash is a real hassle), then I can see more people joining. It wouldnt hurt for them to start a US based server either.....
its quite simple why people dont play the game its full of pvp gankers who play everday to harass kill steal from new players in their 10 day trial
why did i take my LE out quite simple how can you play a trial without seeing how the average players react to a low level player they can kill
well i got my answer the low level hunting area's are filled with high level characters who kill new players with impunity. the wastelands are locked down by occupying clans or clan depending on your server making travel and access to limited content player controlled by the pk crowd.
I'm not talking about getting killed a few times a day while trying to level or make money. I'm talking about shoot first ask questions later pk'ers killng you continually in seperate area's of the map while trying to retrieve your goods you lost when killed the first time. yes i know you can use genrep and pay 5k to get your goods back hate to break it to the high level characters who forgot how valuable 5k is to the new player.
with a player base filled with immature griefers who have no set standards to which they adhere no recuitment policies other than do you like to kill people? many of the clans and of course powerful ones are nothing but roving mobs of kill on sight players whose only purpose is to run off all the new players during their trial and then complain on the official neocron forums about how they need more competition than shooting your average joe new player with their hand of god triple modded rare super weapon in two shots.
mmo's can only offer so much its the player base that gives an mmo community and draws in new players wether the game is based on pvp or not any game needs acceptable rules of conduct or all falls into chaos and then the pk'ers sit around and wonder why the game isnt as popular

Wow you should had it tough! I have only been PK'ed a handful of times since I started Neocron. I play on Pluto and never had a problem with player killing. I levelled for a while in sewers, cellars and the militray base with no major issues, and I removed my LE when I got to about level 15 or so, when I joined a clan. One word of advice is to find a nice quiet sewer to level in (if you take your LE out - which you don't need to do until you want to join a clan) there are plenty of sewers and cellars to visit.
Once you join a clan the game opens up. You have other people to level with, team up and you will be able to defend yourselves, travel to different areas of the world and generally enjoy Neocron.
Neocron is based on PvP, so if you do not want to be killed by other players then this may not be the right game for you. But its the perfect mix of RPG and FPS there is....
When I started this post, I was playing on Pluto and was still relatively new to the game. I didn't understand why the server population was so low. I still can't understand why no one seems to be playing this game, but I can explain why I quit.
1) Ganking. This is by far the most frustrating aspect of NC and the main reason I left. I'm not talking about regular PvP, I'm talking about killing lowbies for the hell of it. A typical example is this: one time I was outside the Military Base fighting a Launcher Cyclops. I was probably around 35 at the time. I was winning, but was at about 40% health. In the midst of the battle, a 65 PE comes up FROM BEHIND and ganks me with his Ray of God. I was in a fight, preoccupied with the mob, at less than half health, a good 25-30 levels below this guy, and he STILL attacked me from behind. This type of behavior was rampant and the gankers never got punished through bad reps or whatever.
2) Low population. I played on Pluto, too, and the most I ever saw on the server was 250 or so. I joined 3 clans, all of which fell apart right after I joined because there was no one to recruit. Also, since there were so few players, the people with bad reps were never ostracized because they were needed to repair or construct or implant or whatever, so LeetD00D47 might be a notorious ganker, but no one would do anything about it because he could also construct slotted weapons, for example.
3) Lack of diversity. All the sewers were basically the same and the wastelands were mostly empty wide open spaces. I tried a couple of dungeons, but they required groups, which I never could get because no one was playing (see #2)
4) Constant client crashes. Every time I played, my client crashed. Every time. Sometimes it was while zoning, sometimes it was out of the blue, but I never ever played a session that my client didn't crash at least once.
I don't want to sound like I'm dogging KK, because I think there is a lot of good in NC, but these are the reasons I left. If BDOY rectifies these problems and draws more people to the game, I think NC will be a great MMOG. I also think they need to cut the number of factions in half and make things like StockX and Rokkwear actually work like they're supposed to. I'm actually watching for BDOY and hoping it will be a boon to Neocron.
Regardless, I'll never go back. There are too many good, stable, polished MMOGs out there to have to put up with the issues I described.
I think the main problems why more people aren't playing the game.
1. Advertisment. CDV really screwed the pooch IMHO. They were responsible for the advertisement and product placement and they got no where with it.
2. Installation problems. If the game is hard to install then the player is going to give up before they even begin. AFAIK the installer is better then it was. Corrupted build was posted up on the net when they had download release (again CDV).
3. Learning Curve. They added MC5 to help new players to the game and it was a bit of a disaster. They have improved it a lot (more cash to leave, better training for new players).
Now anyone complaining about Ganking. Simple solution. Leave your LE in. There are no negative effects from the LE and you loose nothing when you die. You can level in peace until you are ready to fight. The game is combat centric. It means you have to fight some time or later. Keeping in the LE helps build skills and get used to the game at your pace and build friends to protect you.
You should not be joining a clan so soon in the game. 99% of the time the clan in question will not be on to protect you and wearing a clan tag means you get all thier baggage (eg. clan member kills someone, you get killed for them doing it).
Once you get to a good enough level it is easy to get items.
the people with bad reps were never ostracized because they were needed to repair or construct or implant or whatever, so LeetD00D47 might be a notorious ganker, but no one would do anything about it because he could also construct slotted weapons, for example.
This has never been the case on Pluto. Most of the long term players have second or more accounts. People who are dishonest don't get service, just ask "Megaman" (famous pk'er). Pluto is a bit strange then other servers. With the one player rule a lot of players know each other so they may fight out while hunting but are pretty decent about it afterwards.
3) Lack of diversity. All the sewers were basically the same and the wastelands were mostly empty wide open spaces.
The sewer systems are huge. Pepper park sewer systems have bosses at the end of them. The main city sewer system is huge and easy to get lost in. It is a shame it is only for low-mid level runners. As for the wastelands are empty? Far from it. It might of been 8 or 9 months ago but nearly every zone now has some kind of mid to extremly high level mob in it.
4) Constant client crashes. Every time I played, my client crashed.
This is a problem for some. Earlier at the start crashes were often and many. Nowdays most people crash rarely. However some people crash a hell of a lot of times. KK are looking into it but those people who crash rarely hand in thier error logs the program generates so they can track the crash.

Two problems with that:
1) Your LE takes up a head implant slot, which puts you at a disadvantage as far as adding stats. I needed all 4 slots to get certain skills up to levels where I could use certain weapons or other things.
2) You cannot be in a clan and use the LE, unless some things have changed. I don't mind soloing, but I like to be part of a clan or guild. The LE prevents that.
Also, you supposedly get less experience with the LE, but I never really could tell a huge difference.
1) Your LE takes up a head implant slot, which puts you at a disadvantage as far as adding stats.
You are not supposed to wear the LE forever, it is supposed to get you to a level where you are more at ease at fighting (for some it's straight away, for others it is near capping).
2) You cannot be in a clan and use the LE, unless some things have changed.
That is true. The game is PvP based and as such clans play a huge part on the world. An LE clan serves no purpose except as a cop-out.
Also, you supposedly get less experience with the LE, but I never really could tell a huge difference.
They have long since removed that. There is no XP/Cash loss using an LE. Also you fail to mention that you loose nothing when you die, you can't be attacked with the LE. These make a huge difference for levelling to a point where you are strong enough to fight.
Heck, if you don't bother with imps (which you shouldn't until your higher level anyway) then you can kill self for cheap genrepping.
Like I said the game isn't for everyone. If you don't like combat then this game isn't really for you.
I might actually start again then, the LE chip and its description was and is on my top 5 most stupid things in a mmorpg ever. It was described as a way for cityadmin to keep track of their citiziens and they very much wanted eveyone to wear one, but at the same time penalizing you for having it. Seeing how NC has fared this huge mega flaw in logic might be the cause. Like Levis making a pair o jeans that took 10% of your cash in your wallet and at the same time squezing your gonads so hard it made you impotent, (hey, why arent anyone wearing our jeans?)
NC beta was undoubtedly the most fun I had in mmorpg like ever, as "maker of stuf" (later on live on Pluto), I was a CST with a good reputation and no pushover combat wise either.
The craft system was/is very good and I could prolly play the game never leaving plaza and still having fun, now if the LE chip do not penalize me anymore on them rare occasions I need to travel I just might give it a shot again.

as you can see its people have their own views. i personally waiting for BDOY to come out and ill be back, the stat system is the best ive seen in any game and there was allot of player firction which led to some good RP from parties.
the only thing that lets it down is the marketing dept, there isnt one, so its stayed cult.
I'm on the trial right now and I have to say, it really is a fun game. I did crash to desktop once and I think I had maybe 2 sync errors in the space of about 3 hours but other than that it's really kewl.
If more people would just stick around a bit others would see the population rising and maybe stay. This game is definitely a refreshing change from the boring leveling of L2 or DAOC or something like that. I am sick of click and wait games. Combat style has always been really important to me since it makes up the largest chunk of time you will spend in the game. Since combat is actually fun in neocron, leveling isn't a chore.
Anyhow, I find there are a lot of features in this game that make it pretty nifty. I don't know if I'll be able to solo my way up to getting into a clan and finding some real action but we'll see I guess. There were 100+ people on when I played so they must be doing something somewhere.
I say go back, give it a shot, you might be surprised
Originally posted by TigerRei This is coming from someone NOT affiliated with KK or a person who has been banned repeatedly from their forums. Hopefully this can be a third party review. Neocron started off as a great game for me, but I dislike it now. Not for all the reasons stated by SigmaHex. However, some of the things Nidhogg posted werent entirely true either. I'll elaborate. The "Crash Hole" as Sig so lovingly puts it, wasnt that buggy for me. However, I agree with him on the issue that a lot of new players tend to spend a long time there trying to kill enough to leave. When I first joined and got sent here, it took me forever to figure out what to do. Then I couldnt find the generep. I wandered around everywhere, died a few times, till I found it. Then what? Oh, I dont have enough money? Crap. Well there I go, wandering around again. The grass makes it nearly impossible to see anything on the ground. And even if you could find one, chances are there's someone already attacking it. Sure you can be a mean person and killsteal, but I'm not mean. The first time, I spent over an hour in this boring place trying to find a way to get out. Now...the PKing issue is horrible. For me it's to the point of making the game unenjoyable. For those not into PvP, you have to spend all your time in Via Rosso or the Plaza, or an empty level 1 sewer, to stay safe from the PKers. Go anywhere else, and you get PKed by people wanting loot, or PKed by people who dont like you, or PKed by people who find out you're not in their clan, or PKed by people who didnt like the clan you just joined, or PKed for bending over on a Thursday. No matter what, people love to PK in this game, and it's frustrating. Rather than going on about it, I'll finish with a few comments. First, I participated in Neocron from Beta 3 to retail, so I didnt just spend a few days on it. Secondly, I never been into the Wastelands. Never could survive the PKers to get that far.
NC is a PVP oriented game. Everything in the game is desinged to bring ppl together either in cooperation as a clan, for example, for the ultimate purpose of PvP and confrontation between clans/factions. PvP is the ultimate purpose of NC. So if you dont like fighting you might wanna find another game

For me it wasnt the PvP element itself that drove me away from the game, it was the fact that most players used this (and the relative lack of PvP control) to just kill anyone and everyone - I can fully understand wanting to kill your enemies, but I cant understand why people get a kick out of killing people of such a radically different level that they have no chance to fight back (because there are no controls against such action) - and I got real tired of the "I'm a psycho killer" argument real quick (but hey, not so Psycho as to have friends and clan mates who you _dont_ attack on sight - so not really psycho at all then!
I also couldnt hack the fact that Neocrons enemies could freely walk through the city (I understand this will change in DOY) and this mostly added to the above problem (it was those enemies most likely to kill you) and the lame reasons for those players choosing to hang in the city ("thats where the tradeskillers are" - well DUH! you _choose_ to be an enemy, it did tell you it wouldnt be easier
So I quit until DOY arrives, I'll probably give it another try then, but tbh I'm not a great fan of PvP (certainly not when its so uncontrolled and potentially unfair/unbalanced) so unless I can play without PvP 'griefing' my playstyle I probably wont be sticking around
Which would be a shame because the storeline really gripped me, even if most of the players didnt get a stuff about it (beyond the fact that X hates Y and which means we can kill them)
I thought the game was good after playing the offline demo, only thing is the games graphics got me nausiated, i cant play certain games or i get nausiated and throw up,sort of like seizures or something. LOL.

if it was due to the character sway, you can turn that off, though forget how, im sure if you do play as on ofical forum someone there will know,
What they need to do is combine all the accounts onto one new server beginning the territories etc from scratch. There are so few players now that its hard for a noob to level.
I played for about a year but quit about a year ago and now i am back but although when people are on they are very helpful there are rarely enough people on.
When i was on last people gathered together and there was so many people that most of them had to mute local chat.
Now this same gathering area, which was the main 'marketplace' is now empty completely, apart from me yelling at everyone who passes to see if they have the tradeskill i need at the time

your not on pluto are you, that server has the worst population of all the servers, saturn and uranus has better pops figures.

You are not supposed to wear the LE forever, it is supposed to get you to a level where you are more at ease at fighting (for some it's straight away, for others it is near capping).
That is true. The game is PvP based and as such clans play a huge part on the world. An LE clan serves no purpose except as a cop-out.
If you don't like combat then this game isn't really for you.
they removed the LE penalties you say?

Any clans need a fresh newb to toss around? LOL
Kz.
Hey Kaez, i also really like Neocron and in my opinion its really no problem to find a clan.
I play on Jupiter(German) and here you can find a nice clan in no time, there is always a nice clan with a warm spot for everyone
Just ask around or use your Hometerm to search for a clan with your Faction.
LOL.
this is true.
Now this same gathering area, which was the main 'marketplace' is now empty completely, apart from me yelling at everyone who passes to see if they have the tradeskill i need at the time
MUAHAHAHAHAHA
MUAHAHAHAHAHA
i presume your talking about plaza 1, you might want to check out plaza 2 normally more people hanging there these days as the CA guards in P1 open fire on anti city runners
your not on pluto are you, that server has the worst population of all the servers, saturn and uranus has better pops figures.
