"...Chris and I (Warren Spector) co-produced the game (WC). Where his talent dropped out, mine started, and vice versa. We did a task breakdown, and I ended up updating, adjusting and tracking scheduling, and preparing all the documentation."

This commentary pretty much points out Roberts' weaknesses in production management.

Given that the revenue model is pulling in crowd funding, they have to continually present a shiny, fanciful image that is 'just over the hill.'   Nowadays CIG puts out a weekly friday video presenting - something - .  Important, interesting, fluff or dross, it has to go out.  Thus we have all that built up blather.

Just over the hill!  Next year we'll have the Beta, problems fixed, MVP, something!  But it's still most likely to be a ship jpeg for sale.

You might possibly be able to excuse som eof the earlier stuff maybe even stuff as recent as 2016, but anything from 2018 to present (and there are quite afew in that list) is really inexcusable. But theyre broke and need money even with the 'private investors' and selling part of the company (which is worth just about zero if they dont release anything) so they continue to say what they need to to keep the money fowing.
Yeah the 90 days top just keeps on piling indeed lol

Delaying a video-game is something usual in the industry, the bigger and more complex the games is the hard it is to predict anything. The only constant thing in game development is change, constant change due the experimentation and iteration nature of developing things for the first time. If it was easy other studios with more experience, dev's and money would have done it by now. :D

You always bring Warren Spector quotes to downplay Chris Roberts merits while ignoring that he considers him one of the most talented people in the business lol

Not only they are a a very similar rare breed of old-school developers still working in the game industry. But they share similar paths, namely getting out of the industry for a while and recently coming back to work on their dream projects.

Both are back into making their favourite games on modern tech and dealing with the problems that go along with it.

If you weren't so laser focused in scrutinizing Chris Roberts you'd understand that every developer would struggle taking on a project like StarCitizen/Squadron42. After all developers are only human, every single one of them as their talent's and flaws to go along with.

Notice that Spector (like most oldschool dev's) System Shock 3 is also struggling. It changed art style mid development along with game engine (from unity to unreal) erasing great part of the work done in the last years. For that, It's been delayed several times, it's old publisher ran out of money and they had to layoff a bunch of people ending up being bought by our Chinese friends from Tencent.
You know what that means right, Goodbye artistic freedom.

But hey, it doesn't realy matter right to you since you're not emotionally invested in System Shock 3 (because it's being developed behind closed doors like most games exactly to avoid unnecessary dramas and obsessions from gamers who don't know better).

You know a game is special when even the people who don't like it maintain such level of obsession about it years after years... no wonder the funding keeps skyrocketing every year! :D

And no, people just enjoy watching wrecks. Its human nature. You see a car is about to crash and you can't help but to watch. Has nothing to do with this game being special, but if it helps you sleep at night...

Yeah I just got Kotaku to join me in making excuses. B)

And I even made a deal with Ubisoft to delay BeyondGood&Evil2 2019 Beta test: https://www.gamespot.com/articles/beyond-good-and-evil-2-beta-launching-by-end-of-ne/1100-6459872/

Cyberpunk was also delayed 3 times because of me. Bethesdas on it too as Starfield is no where to be seen.

Also made a pact with the other Crowdfunded MMO's for the sake of excuses. Sorry to all the backers, my fault!

    Ignorance is bliss! :D

You're the one blindly hating on delayed games even ignoring the facts presented clearly at you lol

Because: you know no better and don't care, are bored, are bitter and delusioned that you can't find new mmo's to enjoy and feel excited about while others are having fun. All of the above.

If you lost faith in video-games that's your own problem to solve, meanwhile other gamers are doing just fine enjoying and supporting the games they like, you should try the same. B)

Dec. 11, 2015, you like to ignore that fact. Instead you clinge to the hilarious "delays happen argument". Yes they do, but 5 years and no release date in sight is a little more than a delay. But you drank to cool-aide.

And nah, very much looking forward to Dual Universe but nice try. Have fun waiting 5 or more years before you get to get raped by whales who bought better ships than you!

Tell that to Blizzard, Ubisoft, Bethesda, NaughtyDog, Rockstar and every other big studio who took longer than 5 years to develop a game :D

All of them B) , in projects developed behind doors that had internal estimated release dates that the public never heard off! Along with all the ones we know about. Blizzard with Titan, BeyondGood&Evil2 with Ubisoft, ElderScrolls with Bethesda, CDProject Red with Cyberpunk, Rockstar with RedDeadRedemption and so on.

The main difference is that none of those studios doing ambitious games had to go through the crowdfunded route and pitch their project to the whole world because they had no studio, dev's or money to make the game they wanted.

Just take a look at the estimate timelines of every Crowdfunded MMO and you'll notice big discrepancies between what was stated and reality, that is because the main goal of a kickstart is to get the ball rolling! The estimated release dates are part of the marketing of getting investors, and it's exactly the same thing publishers/investors deal with when listening to game pitches than then end up taking longer than "estimated".

That's why crowdfunded games exist, because they cater to niches that have been neglected because they are seen as too risky for little reward (no profit).

That's why it's a pity that those many gamers who complain about the lack of innovation and the wow clones in the mmorpg world are the first ones to attacking indie dev's putting the effort into making something new because they miss some estimated deadlines from years ago lol

No wonder mmorpg world is so dire and dev's need to develop in secrecy, randoms just can't handle seeing the sausage get made!

How many release dates have they set for the projects hteyre doing? A dozen at least. How many of them have released?...that would be zero. How many have had release dates updated in just he past calendar year?

They not only delayed SQ 42 after how many promises it would be released on time "this time", they delayed the frigging road map. You seriously cant make it up. And that road map isnt even THE road map but an outline of a possible road map that may or may not need to be re-roadmapped.

As for the other nonsense about taking more than 5 years, its been at least 8 and more than likely closer to 10 since they started working on it, but at least 8 years of semi serious work, and if you want to talk about redoing the engine or they didnt have a very big team or all that other garbage remember in the end they still arent using THEIR engone or one they spent how many millions redoing? Theyre using AMAZONs which I said whe it happened was a frigging miracle, but all that really did was make it appear like they had a prayer of putting something out. How many years have they been working with the Lumberyard engine? And dont forget to count the secret year (the one they got sued for) when you do that tabulation, I think THATS been 3 years already and maybe even 4.

So they have had 350 or so million given tot hem, they had their engine built for them and what do they have? Remember when every dollar given to Roberts was like 5 dollars to a 'regular' developer. SO they have had over 1.5 BILLION in 'value' given to them AND they had an engine basically gifted to them for nothing.

But just use the reality of the numbers, what you see is what you get, 3.10 or whatever theyre on is what they have they are working on a day to day basis at this point. Less money comes in less gets done, unless they can string their employees along with promises (and no pay check) like they string along the backers.

I will say it here and now.... a year form now SQ 42 wont be released nor will there be a beta of any kind either,  and there will be just more excuses as to why.

Yeah crowdfunded companys need to comunicate in different ways than traditional companies working in secret. The complexities of doing ambitious games are way bigger when you're a new studio growing from scratch who also acts as a publisher.

Doesn't matter how you get your funding or when you announce your game when it comes to development issues. They will happen nonetheless, what changes is your perception of it and since most dont have a broad understanding of the subject they cry wolf lol

Get with the times folks. Google has most of the info if you spend as much time hating as you did reading about game development in general you would be able to contribute more than salty tears.  :D

But please tell us @jmla@jmlane223 , how can you be very much looking forward Dual Universe (hint, me too) when you seem to despise games that take longer than 5 years in Development, you do know they started back in 2014 don't you, you don know they planned to release back in 2018 don't you?

How will you deal with Dual Universe whales that have downed making death-stars construction to the core when you're so afraid of conflict :D

How foolish are we feeling now that a little glimpse of light shed into that deep cave of yours?

You are a bad troll. Star Citizen has been in development since 2011 at latest, was initially set to release in 2014.

Star Citizen you can buy expensive and massive ships, dual universe you make them.

Now what you do,  passing by every Star Citizen thread shitposting your heart out because you're somewhat too jaded and bored with gaming that you've become obsessed with a video-game for some odd reason lol

You'll be happy to find out that Dual Universe, which was kickstarted with the help of  Chris Roberts and Star Citizen backers, was also in concept back in 2011 and just hit Beta!
    You should play it! B)

Someone said "Chris Robert's merits" lmao

I have NEVER considered a single thing he has done to be any good at all.

As to right this minute,SC is NOT in a viable product mode because i don't want to even remotely play it.

As long as the developer isn't a complete douche i will play their games if they are any good or as the title states and a good title i might add "VIABLE" products.
Not only is SC miles away from what i consider to be viable,it has grossly misspent the funds given to them by using them to fund the cash shop sales of ships.

You can tell me i am wrong but i am not,the whole purpose of this crowd funding was to build and FINISH the game is it not?It was NOT a crowd funded venture asking for money to fund a cash shop.Chris did not come out and say "i need money to start my cash shop of selling ships",he has NEVER stated that,so he is misrepresenting/fraud his game/business and mishandling the funds.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

Just a note to all:  You can check out all the vaporous excuses used by the diehard SC fans.  Compare them to the present excuses.  Shake your head in wonderment.

Its true, the same excuses used in 2016 are offered up today, only difference is in who the knights are.

Just like CoE.   The best argument is to simply take what was said and compare it to reality a year or two later.

Like I said before, it's amazing how the same two people show up endlessly on every single SC thread to defend the game.  Most of us drop in once in a while to offer our views.  They're here constantly.  I see two probable options here:  1)  they're highly obsessive fanatics with a tremendous amount of free time or 2) they're paid by CIG.  My gut tells me it's the second.

Really, option 2 is probably the best case for them personally.

I stopped doing that because reality always makes me sad.
