Black Desert does a lot for people that like to wander off, explore, etc. You might find a cave that's not on the map, with a chest in it... you might run into a wild horse, and if you have a rope and some sugar, that horse could be yours, if you can tame it. Maybe you want to build or buy a raft or fishing boat and just sail around, find islands, fish... or get a cart and trade between towns. As for grouping, there are guilds and not all of them are hardcore progression guilds. Finding someone on your schedule and your pace isn't impossible.
That sounds great and all..until I ran into gender locked classes...really?
Because if you're rushing other people you're generally nagging for others to go your speed. Rarely is there that one person or a group like slow down unless the game requires downtime which most don't.
So what? And dragging others' back is .. you are generally nagging for others to go your speed. The SAME thing.
Sure rushing is more popular. That just say more people prefer faster gameplay.
So you complain because your preference is not popular. No one is obliged to play your preference. Sure, you can air your opinion. But it is fair for me to also point out that it is just a preference, and it is not superior than those who want to rush.
You over simplify the difference. There is far more to it which is why different game play and even a difference audience is generated.
Slow and fast game play offer a difference experience because the game is built around those differences. Slow game play is a general term for the requirement of specific, strategic options not offered in fast game play. Crowd control, buffing and debuffing classes or what is often known as the "4th" pillar typically go away in fast spam attack games. They become little more than dps races and at best only support trinity. Classes are watered down and have so much cross over in ability that class, skill and group choice becomes meaningless.
Interrupts and highly strategic power choices become less important in fast game play. All classes begin to play the same way as well. Everyone is full of instant attacks and the only real difference between powers is their range ... often leaving either ranged or melee at a disadvantage because of the shortcomings of the system (just look at ESO or GW2).
Modern mmos have become easier, faster and often flat out FPS because of the corruption of the genre to attract a larger audience. By doing so the genre of tactical, slower game play was lost.
The 2 styles are entirely different from the ground up and not just in speed. Most of the speed seen in modern mmos came about from conveniences that stripped the very reason why the game was slower to begin with. The argument for preference is real and a MUCH larger topic than you make it out to be. It is a conversation about core game design and purpose.
There is one undeniable fact when it comes to mmos today: Different audiences have mixed so much that most have lost sight of the fact that they should NEVER have mixed to begin with. We have little more than a bulk of games so utterly compromised trying to please everyone that genre has been nearly destroyed. Each game will be healthier by supporting tighter, smaller communities if community is even something they give a shit about.

I don't know which one is more popular. Do you? The few times I have encountered a rusher the idiot got us killed because we weren't ready in EQ. The rest of the times it was one guy whining the whole time.
I enjoy grouping. Not rushing through dungeons, or exploiting bosses. Not rushing to end game to be top dawg on the server. I enjoy the company of others on voice comms. I want to explore the worlds, take in the sights. Have laughs and also do some pvp. If there is an area that gives less xp but different scenery, lets go there and not care. There are always people online in teamspeak playing this game that you can group with without having to grind up to their level. You can almost immediately jump into the action and build up a decent character in only a week or so of playing. Seriously in my alliance there are people to group with at 5am, 10pm, 2am, all around the clock..and everything in the game is very group oriented.
Last time I played we killed a dragon. Time before that we killed some dungeons boss. Time before that was a PVP siege that we won Time before that we capped the sea towers and had a boat fight.

Not really. But the point is the slower players are not superior to the rushing ones. They just like different things.

Of course they are not obliged to, players make accommodation to others as a common courtesy.
But if modern MMOs have proven anything, courtesy is neither common or valued by very many.

In the most popular MMORPG (WOW), very little time is wasted sitting around. If we consider that "rushing" (instead of calling it "playing the game" like we should) then yes, rushing is more popular.

I would like to see the stats on how many people do nothing but push through content that provide maximal xp vs those that take time from pushing max xp to do other things.
It might be a majority but I dont think it's as big as you think.
Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it is bad.

By bringing WOW in as exhibit "A" you lost the argument, at least in my view.
It is the classic example of how I don't want my MMORPGs designed.

They can do and feel what they want, as I can, I can also express my feelings on it as I just did...it's not about being superior, it's a matter of not wanting to be rushed, nor ridiculed for wanting to have some context to why my character is in that dungeon or scenario (which happened a lot in GW1 as an example)... I've also experienced it in TOR and ESO to a lesser degree. So stuff it and skip it if you don't wanna hear it.
so? You don't want to be rushed. They don't want to be bored. You shouldn't play with them. Why complain? Just play with people like you.
You don't think you are changing them, do you?
I never said anything about changing anyone, and you're right this is why I typically play solo or with my wife and friends at this point in MMORPG's (at least as far as PVE goes).
As for "why complain?" I didn't complain I offered an observation hence leading in with "that's all fine and good until"... It was also a rebuttal to the notion people don't "rush". As those folks are certainly rushing as well as expecting everyone else to with them.

In that case, we agree.
Clearly "rushing" is there, even in relative. There is no denying that different players like different pace of their games. In fact, it is a mistake to force players who are not compatible to play together.
Its funny though because when you think about it, its almost like our lack of ability to agree and not be able to agree on game play has single handedly caused many games to fail and I think wild star is a good example. BECAUSE of US games now try to please both parties to the point neither are happy and fulfilled at the end of the day lol. Players that rush to max quite due to lack of content and boredom those who dont quite due to gankers and zergs then forced in to the gameplay that dosent please them.. Then we all quite lol....or until a new content update.

Why is this a problem? No one says we need to continuous play one single game. Look at D3. Content is refreshed every 3 months. Many (including me) play in the beginning, than leave (or even skipping some seasons).
So this is a game that is played on and off for a long time, and it only costs $100 ($60 + $40 expansion). So again, why not?
We are out here and awaiting Pantheon, Star Citizen and Shroud of the Avatar... maybe even Camelot Unchained.
Hm. I suspect I'll need my crucifixion-proof pants on, but does Star Citizen belong on that list? It's inspired sure, but so are MANY games. Inspiration is not the criteria we're concerned with, is it?
The crucial aspects of Pantheon, Shroud, and Camelot relate to social behavior, requiring gamers to bond socially to communally overcome challenges, which solidifies those bonds, creating communities, the kind which are so conspicuously missing in the games from which "our crowd" is fleeing.
If if one merely seeks comprehensive, deep, inspired worlds, one has a plethora of quality options, sans community.
Sometimes I'm sure you are being intentionally obtuse, you have to know rushing means focusing on content that delivers maximum progression while ignoring content that doesn't contribute.
So yes, if a game's progression occurs primarily or only through combat, and all a player does is said combat, (while ecshewing trading, crafting, collecting, exploring, socializing etc) then yes, they are rushing. (jeez, did I really just explain this?)
TLDR version: if a player focuses their time almost entirely on the progression to "end game" as quickly as possible while ignoring the journey, they are rushing.
So I'll be equally obtuse. In the past month I've done nothing but mine, haul goods, provide boosts and socialize in EVE with nary a kill (pesky belt rats aside) with no focus on combat with players or npcs, so clearly I'm not "rushing."
The term "rushing" is most commonly used to refer to how groups will push through dungeons rapidly without wasting time. (Seen in the OP's post.) It's also used to talk about wasting no time advancing to max level. (Also in OP's post.) It's not so much about which content you choose to play, but mostly about the notion of avoiding deliberate wastes of time (which is more about avoiding idling than in what content you choose to engage with.)
All of which is just playing the game. Calling it "rushing" is weird.
I mean you can understand how weird it is firsthand when I now accuse you of rushing EVE every time you sat there mining and when you kept your skills training nonstop without idling. Your response should be to look at me strangely and say "but that's just playing the game" to which I'd respond "yes, that's exactly my point."
You very nearly understood (I mean that nicely).
You are spot on right up until you conflate "idling" with "wasting time."
In Elite Dangerous I sometimes randomly fly in loops around a solar system, feeling the tug of gravity and the push of my engines. I am "idling" yet in no sense am I "wasting time."
Calling that activity "rushing" would make no sense, considering it grants no progress beyond playtime incrementing.
Thus, "rushing" is an apt phrase for eschewing "idling."
These are just your own words, rephrased. "...rushing...is avoiding wasting time... is avoiding idling... "
But you contradict yourself; "Calling it rushing is weird."
I.e. - the distinction between "idling" and "rushing" remains clear, and both remain legitimate gameplay.
Im tired and my thinking cap has clearly slipped, forgive me if I've misread.

Sounds like you and I could be good friends. i'm 33, pretty much in the same boat. Haven't touched mmorpg's in years now. I really miss the old ones. Maybe darkfall UW is the right one for me. I remember playing the original darkfall and 3 things turned me off in that game:
Your skills delevel overtime if you don't use them. I remember taking a 2week vacation and when I came back, 2 months of work were gone.
All skills required items to use, bah boring. Can we just stick with MP?
Choppy fight animations and hit boxes. If you are going to try to make a game realistic, at least have it flow so it feels natural. Is it really that hard to make a game where the movement isn't so clunky?
Anyway is Darkfall UW like that?
Your skills do not dislevel.. not sure what happened to you there? Maybe there was a server rollback? That doesn't really happen so no need to worry about that.
All skills still require items to use.
Original Darkfall was choppier.. seems like lag is pretty much fixed too. The animations are still not all that great but at least its no longer casting buffs before going into battle. There are no numbers popping up during battle and it generally feels a bit more realistic than other MMOs..
Unholy Wars and original are completely different games.. The world is a bit smaller and they made the races too similar (races were done much better in the first one) and now there are safe zones in the starting area... meh those are the negative changes.. theres nobody in starting areas at all, the mobs there suck.
There are now many less skills/spells to bind.. you can only have a certain amount of them at a time. This is both a good thing and a bad thing. Its easier for everyone, especially new players, but I miss having every key on my keyboard doing something like in the original one. The UI has improved so that you no longer need a macro to use sword and shield with the press of one button and you can assign spells to items so that they are ready when you switch. Overall, as a new player you will find that its no longer impossible to catch up to people.
Seems like you switch roles often now... especially during PVE because different monsters have different weaknesses. You can customize it a bit but there is tank, archer, wizard, healer... usually a combination of whatever works best for you. Its no longer everyone doing the exact same thing. You can switch classes whenever you want.
Now for the positives.. the prowess system and how you increase your skills is totally awesome!! Really works well, you get some prowess from doing pretty much anything and you can increase whatever skills you want, regardless if you used them or not.
So there is no more need for macroing and skilling up is easy to do... it would only take a week of playing to pass me and I have been playing since release. I haven't grind but theres no need to. It still does take awhile to get a ready bag together, especially if its for PVP. So risk vs reward is still real.
You can still start out the game and join up with people right away like in the original but this time its easy to catch up to them.... you don't have to grind anymore for raising skills like you did in the first one.. just put together ready bags and by doing that you will have tons of prowess to spend on skills.
Honestly you can catch up to me in a week of play and I have played since the beginning. Send me a message or something if you decide to try it.. we could farm some prowess for a bit and make it easy for you. If you joined my alliance there is always someone online to play with at all times it seems and always people in teamspeak.
There are a few other new things.. like PVE bosses that randomly generate as you kill mobs, but I haven't done much of that yet. Theres actually a lot of new things in the game... more in the territory control with levies of a clan city, you can get buffs when in the area, etc. harvesting is easier now too you can harvest in certain areas and its twice as fast.
If you want to play this game do it now before it closes down. Its been out for awhile now. You can still find PVP whenever you want it but can also PVE without getting bothered and for the most part would be left alone.

I.e. - the distinction between "idling" and "rushing" remains clear, and both remain legitimate gameplay.
Im tired and my thinking cap has clearly slipped, forgive me if I've misread.
