Do you really believe that Microsoft is suddenly going to go from trying to force people to upgrade so hard that they're being a complete nuisance to suddenly not letting people upgrade unless they pay? I don't.
No change to the network security issues, no guarantee that I can opt out of the transfer of data to Microsoft. Lots of "we are Microsoft and we know your needs better than you do". So no still not tempted, not even a little bit.
I'm not sure if they'll go through it or not, but we planned on transitioning the company to Windows 10 at some point anyways
Pro-tip, if you really dont' want to migrate to 10 right now but may in the future, utilize your product keys now just to get the license key for Win10, then revert back to whatever version you want. I believe the downgrade still works pretty well actually.
I personally have upgraded all the computers in our house to Windows 10, 2 Win 7 desktops and 2 win 8.1 laptops, and to be honest it was the best thing I ever I did, Win 10 is definitely faster than Win 7 and the machines with it on seem to be using less resources and running faster so I'd recommend upgrading.

Hmm... odd, I don't see the smiley I think that date will be just a reason for a huge ad campaign, but nothing more, pretty much as @Quizzical wrote above. At first it was just a free (optional) upgrade, then they switched it to a sneaky auto-update, then into a forced one where you had to actively prevent the upgrade to happen - and guess what, it still has less market share than 8.1 and XP combined (while XP is allegedly long dead, and 8.1 was expected to everyone rushing onto 10 right away). Not really a massive, landslide success.
And 7, that's still the OS on almost every other desktop out there (according to different measures between 44 and 51 %). After all those upgrade tactics they've implemented. I think the measure range is due to the reverts, I too had to reinstall 7 on two, less tech-interested family members' PCs after the second, more intrusive update change, and I'm sure MS counts those licenses as 10, while statcounter for example counts them rightfully as 7.
So yep, can't wait to see their big turn from "we're forcing it down your throats" to "na-ah, you missed your opportunity, pal, no 10 for you". At least I won't have to check the packages one by one anymore before every update, it will be more convenient :waving:

Forced updates that reset your settings. 4. Forced updates that break your drivers. 5. Edge. 6. Massive bloatware. 7. Invasive 'personal assistant'. 8. Everything is an 'app'. 9. Having to re-set all my settings, again. 10. Windows 8.1 works just fine and Classic Shell is awesome.
My only reason to upgrade, maybe, at some point in the not so near future, is DX12.
Fuck Microsofts force trend. Since the introduction of Tiles I wont ever buy another OS version of Windows. My Win 7 is running superb and is tiles free right of the bat.
I just dl'ed it on a SSD and shall there leave it alone. If it's ever a requirement I will switch but thus far my gen of mobo does better with 7 than 10. I really dig this rig so i'm not dumping it until i have to.
Windows 10 for me has been a downgrade from windows 7. I don't know if it would really impact people that just use their computers for gaming/casual use, but my work productivity has taken a big hit, especially combined with office 2016 (a major downgrade from office 2010).
Edge is even worse than internet explorer, you can hardly see the edges of program windows and headers of programs no longer stand out properly making laying out/changing your workspace a pain, the search engine is just as bad as ever (why do I still need to download a 3rd party program to have a decent document/word search??), the tiles on the start menu are a nightmare ... so many little things that it just does badly. Then there is all the advertising and crap that the OS virtually rams down your throat that you have to strip out before you can even start using it properly.
MS are not really bothered if people don't upgarde.
Whilst the software devs are focused "the best Windows yet" - tiles free as well for those who don't like tiles! - financial folk are focused on reducing costs.
And so they are ending support of Win7 and Win8. Dates have been released - 2017, 2020, 2023 depending on what support, what version of Windows and whether Skylake is involved.
To make it easier - for companies really who are noitoriously slow at upgrading - they have offered a free upgrade. Going forward .... ?
And if anyone in the future complains about Win7 or Win8 not supporting x, y and z MS will say, with clear conscience, not our problem we offered you a free upgrade. And we made a big effort to push it so don't complain to us.

Agreed the one and only thing I would like from windows 10 is dx12 the rest is bleh and I can do without.

My issue with windows 10 is that freaking 'system and compressed memory' bullcrap. It sucks up ram and it makes my programs start to crawl.
Aside from that I have professional and start8 still, it would be perfect if it weren't for the instability from the compressed memory thing.
yeah Microsoft pushed out the largest OS deployment in thier history and they accidentally made everyones applications run slower and most of the media outlets missed it completely.

If that is not most aggresive way to push something by force, i dont know what is.
So now they will go from that to "Ok we didnt manage to trick you to upgrade for free, now we are going to see if you will upgrade by yourself for money"
