Do you really believe that Microsoft is suddenly going to go from trying to force people to upgrade so hard that they're being a complete nuisance to suddenly not letting people upgrade unless they pay?  I don't.
    Exactly.

Every two days I am getting a popup with two options: Upgrade Now or Upgrade Later.

Not even close button or something. I need to close the window by alt F4

If that is not most aggresive way to push something by force, i dont know what is.

So now they will go from that to "Ok we didnt manage to trick you to upgrade for free, now we are going to see if you will upgrade by yourself for money"
MS needs X number of its customers on windows 10 to hook developers to want to create programs that are cross platform. PC, Xbox and Tablet. Once they get what they need it make sense they shut down the free upgrade and make people pay for it. You will wish you upgraded for free when nothing is supported under Windows 10, updates and software.
You know how long ago Windows 7 was released? 2009. Windows 8? 2012.

You claim "you will wish you upgraded for free when nothing is supported under Windows 10, updates and software." Yet...you can still play whatever games you want, use whatever software you want, update whatever you need on Windows 7.  Hell, you can still play whatever game you want on Windows XP even.

So please, spare us the whole "you'll be sorry" line, when by the time that even remotely becomes an issue, a new OS will have cropped up and Win 10 will be left in the ditch.
Thats the thing. Windows isnt making any more new OS. Windows 10 is it, from here forward its only updates. Much like how Apple does things, free upgrades for current customers.
hmmmm I did not know that. But I LIKE IT!

That's the best they can come up with... my top 10 reasons not to upgrade still remain:
    1. Forced updates.
    2. Forced updates that restart your computer when your in the middle of something.
    3. Forced updates that reset your settings.
    4. Forced updates that break your drivers.
    5. Edge.
    6. Massive bloatware.
    7. Invasive 'personal assistant'.
    8. Everything is an 'app'.
    9. Having to re-set all my settings, again.
    10. Windows 8.1 works just fine and Classic Shell is awesome.

My only reason to upgrade, maybe, at some point in the not so near future, is DX12.
Agreed the one and only thing I would like from windows 10 is dx12 the rest is bleh and I can do without.
When Vulkan push out the door DX12 will have trouble being only 1 OS that it runs on. It's been making head way still a bit to ago like DX12 started.

That remains to be seen. They may want that to happen, but they also wanted Windows 8 to be a good OS which they botched horribly until 8.1. For as long as Microsoft has been around, they sure as fuck don't know their customer base very well and has been making some pretty stupid mistakes lately, so their hole "Windows is now a service" shtick will likely fall flat as well.

I doubt it.  Windows 10 is going to around for a while.  I think Microsoft intends to shift more towards the way Apple does things; releasing periodic iterations of Windows 10 rather than an entirely new OS.

It really is silly not to at least reserve the license for your current computer, especially if you own a newer machine that you intend to use a DirectX 12 graphics card with a couple of years from now.
and to leverage your point the 'compete with Apple' is a mantra that is deep in the Microsoft Culture.

Which is a problem for them with games and for that matter even phones.
They will not look at how Valve does things or how Samsung does things but how Apple does.

can they remove that mind set? I dont know but yeah I agree it appears to be the plan

AND on top of that as a tech leader if you say you want follow how others do things then you are no longer a future leader. I might aadd

All tech companies as some point take ideas and build from there. Its rare to come up with a new idea and take it through RD to a product. As for questioning if MS is a leader. In some areas they are, in others they are not.

From a business perspective not rolling out new versions of the Windows OS is a done deal; not enough revenue anymore to justify it; to many people and companies saying "Win 3.0 works just fine" and there is now exremely serious competition in the shape of Android.

Chromebooks continue to gain traction in e.g. schools although I don't feel that "tablets" are a non-market. Maybe they will be for Windows but as a device I see convergence between watches, phones, tablets, laptops, all-in ones, PCs, set-top boxes, TVs and more. The main difference will be size.

Consider Samsung's 18 inch tablet. Pretty poor resolution imo but then again I am used to the resolution and depth you get with AMOLEDs but it is only a matter of time before large tablets make the grade. And even as I knock the beast the screen resolution is better than PCs had for years whilst being more powerful, lighter, cheaper, energy efficient and "portable". Easy to add a keyboard as well.

Harware convergence - what powers such devices - is well advanced. There are a relatively small number of e.g. storage manufacturers out there.

Operating convergence still has a way to go. And those who have a foothold going forward can expect to reap rewards.

fair point. I concede my point is a stretch. I will say that during a tech companies rise they tend to be more creative and then as they get mega huge they then tend to follow others, which is basically the exact story of Microsoft.

Windows 98 was great, had no issues.  Windows XP was great, again zero issues.  Windows Vista was fine, no issues.  Windows 7, no issues.  Windows 8, no issues (both 8 and 8.1).  Windows 10, zero issues.

Seems like the trend is obvious.  If you have problems with windows OS it's the user, not the OS.  Sure, they changed the start menu in Windows 8 and brought it back-ish in windows 8.1.  That's not a broken OS, that's user preference.   Software has been running across all versions of windows since it came out.

The issue is always with the user (or in some cases poor software development from vendors).  Sure, Win10 came out and WebEx didn't work on it right away.  WebEx released a fix eventually and problem solved.  Sure, ancient dust covered hardware doesn't have new drivers for 64-bit OS...  Time to upgrade your hardware maybe?  Or stay on the old version?  But to continue and blame MSFT or other people for your own problems is pretty ignorant.

Other than the blue screen a day.  The reason Microsoft moved everything to the NT line is that the earlier consumer lines were unstable and everyone knew it.

Windows 10 has too many forced behaviour. I use my current windows pc mainly for gaming. The last thing I want is forced driver updates. I want to be in control of my own computer, Microsoft tends to shit on that. So atm I keep Windows 8.1

I think the chance is higher that my next gaming pc will be just linux. With every new purchase I keep track if it can be run on linux (if not native, then using Wine).

You don't understand OS's do you? The problem was many people DIDN'T DOWNLOAD updates with Win XP Pro, only to have issues and sue MS, when they actually did fix the issue but the idiot didn't download it. You can change all of the behavior in Win 10, it is not hard, just look under the hood.

Linux is not much better. There are holes in the Kernel that have not been patched since the beginning. GL trying to run the new Windows games on Linux or using a VM (like WINE), they don't work.

No he is right. WIndows 10 does forced updates. You cant turn them off, only set a time to reboot. If you are not at the screen to tell it when you want to reboot, Windows 10 will reboot on its own, even if you have set your PC to a task. It made a mess of a backup I was doing of my movie collection and it took me a few days to fix it.

MS has moved to forced updates because its biggest failing was security. People would not install the updates and then people who get upset when their PCs were compromised. Blaming MS when it was user problems more often than not.

My biggest problem with the forced updates is my video card driver. For one of my games I need to use the beta drivers to make things run. Every fews days, I come to my PC and its rebooted and the wrong drivers are installed for my video card. I am reinstalling the drivers I want about 1-2 times a week. I know there are tools you can download to fix this but often I am lazy and would rather just install the right drivers while I have supper and get playing after dinner. lol.

Its only a problem for common users as its a default setting. There are workarounds. I think I am more locked into updates because I am running the insider program of windows 10.

    with is most of then,
myself? not gonna upgrade, changes are minimum, and devs are still supporting win7 so no really a reason to go for a new OS.

No. Win10 is the "best" version for me anyway - and I am far from dumb! Others can decide for themselves.

Now perhaps I should add that my graphics driver updates are provided via Geforce Experience and not by MS - presumably because NVidia don't provide the tweaks to MS just the base driver - but as a result probably the only thing that gets updated is Windows itself.

Actually, I do understand OS's. Enough so I don't need any hand holding from Microsoft.  I also can do without the bloody annoying reinstalling of beta drivers again for my graphics card, because Windows decided those are the wrong drivers.

You can't change forced updates in all versions of Win 10. Not in the version that I upgrade to with my WIn 8 version.

And it is quite obvious that you don't know anything about linux. First, wine is not a virtual machine :/ Besides, I know exactly which games work under linux (native or using wine), because with each new purchase I check that first. It is mainly certain AAA companies that don't care, but that is ok, because I rarely care about their games anyway. It is one of the few things where Steam platform excels. Even if you hate it and refuse to purchase anything there, it is still a very good source to find out quickly if a game has native linux support or works using Wine.
