Online girlfriends, online marriages

people had long distance relations since writing was invented, guys. Ok. Since mailing service was invented.

Internet and games just added speed and flavor to this kind of stuff.

Simply put, many people do not feel comfortable with the way they looks, especially in the super model era of today. Meeting somebody in an online game (or a chat, or by ICQ or what have you) cancel effectivly the physical part completely and make you and the other person see only each's other (maybe acted, but then people can act equally well face-to-face) character, personalities, likes, dislikes and so on. THESE, not beauty, are the solid bases of a solid relation. Looks will just help you cover the first few months, enter the first door, but won't keep you in the house in the long run.

As distance talk go over looks, you do not need them to start a relation.

Now, this do not suddenly turn us in homosexuals, you know? if the girl of your dreams turn out to be a male, and he was very charming and funny person to be with, you will prolly have a big laugh together and be his friend. Of course you could feel betrayed (with reason), and trust is requisite number 1 for any relationship, be it friendship or marriage.

This said, fixating yourself with the virtual world, living it as an exclusive, is not very healthy. It limit your horizons and start making you think all in the game terms. I think this is what the original poster had in mind.

Bottom line? Nothing wrong with internet relationship (heck i got to know my wife in UO), but keep in mind we are not in the Matrix yet, and summer days are beautiful. A trip to her state of citizenship is maybe a great way to pass an holyday together. enjoy and have a nice day.

This argument has degenerated to (if it wasn't here already) to people who know females actually do have the mental capacity to operate a computer (gasp! the over powered nerd male testosterone just got a cup shot). And people who think that everyone on the net is the same lonely grey person they see in the mirror in the morning. Jerev the majority of people who actually start relationships over the Internet tend to also use another amazing leap in technology, a telephone. Fairly simple device, a receiver and microphone connected to a series of wires traveling across the world. This tends to weed out the minority of gender confused people in this world.

Though personally I think in-game marriages are a bit odd, I say who cares what I think. It's not my life or my place to judge other's behavoir.

The same people that have a problem with in-game marriages are the same type that are against gay/lesbian marriages:

    ignorant.

Says who?  I know many people who have been married first in game, then got married irl, whose to say where people can meet and where they cant?  The way you play your character is an extension of you.  I highly doubt that people are actually attracted to the character, the actual pixels, its more of they are attracted to the person, and personality thats playing them.  Not everyone is 100% shallow in finding the love of thier life.  People can find love in a chat room, and MMORPGS are just a big chat room, with tons of other stuff to do.  I, nor you, should judge these people, because that sir is whats wrong.

I could not have said it better myself.

I lost a bet with my RL girlfriend and had to create a "wife" for her male character...where does that count in?

It saddens me to see so many game marriages where on of parties thinks that there is something more going on between players than the actual roleplay marriage between characters. But then, it is just human behaviour if there is no difference between actions of player and his avatar in game.

There is nothing wrong finding new RL friends and maybe a wife from online game or chat room but that should not have anything to do with marriage between characters.

ive had several in the past 7 years ive been to mmorpgs...it's all good fun to roleplay for few chuckles...I don't understand those that cry bitch and moan about IG marriages, in game is in game and IRL is IRL, while there's noticeable distance between those two it's all good.

You know my There girl friend had met with her ex boyfriend. Later after I found out about her lies we became friends and he told me they had met in real life. So in fact I have proof she was not a guy. We didn't just fall in love, it happened over time.

How could one choose computer generated eyes made of pixels, over real eyes of a living, breathing human being? I must be missing something here.

Hehe, I never did anything online of that nature...but seeing how some RL folks are, I could easily prefer a computer or a robot over some ''fellow humans'', it all depend on which ''fellow human'' you are talking about!  If it have a uberguild tag it start at Dubious however!  image

A computer never ask you to do anything.  A computer let you live your life...that are 2 damn good reasons in favor of a computer...a computer dont smell bad either and never hardpress you for some stuff at annoying hours.  Buy a cat if you need more then a computer, it is a free hugging bag walking around, which is usually more interesting then most ''fellow humans''.  image

I remember receiving extremely angry tells at online marriages, because I was ruining the mood...eh, I was roleplaying my druid who was strongly opposed to marriages, oh well...some folks are just better left alone, which make me prefer, again, a computer over many humans. image

I was only married online once, waaay back in the realm over 10 years ago, and that was to a real life friend of mine who thought it would be fun.

My wife plays mmorpgs with me, so whenever we play one together we ususally rp that the characters are married or something. We dont do all kissy stupid stuff in th echat though, thats just annoying haha.

Even though I would never marry someone in a game, who am I to tell someone else how to play thier game and you don't have the right either. Its best just to mind  your own business.

Think Jorev would find that offensive and ban you from playing if he could! image

Knowing the conservative, though, this kind of marriage will be banned in the next 3 years.

Yer close, actually it was my first wife, and we met in a MUD, long before EQ was around. Obviously since I said "first wife" it didn't work out, but it had nothing to do with having met online. We met online and were friends both online and off for well over 2 years before getting married and were married for 3. The reason we split was because of me being in the Army and being gone a LOT; 2 deployments and MANY field training trips. There were other factors as well that it took time to come to a head, but thats the same with any relationship. Where/how you meet someone has little to nothing to do with how the relationship is going to work out in the end, because once the meeting part is over, the relationship progresses the same whether you met them in a game, in a bar or in a library...

Well I don't know if I can add anything positive to the thread that hasn't already been said but I can say from personal experience that you can meet some amazing people in MMO's. I've met some fantastic friends that I dearly hope I'll keep in contact with forever and most importantly I met my current boyfriend of 1 year + now through SWG Beta, way long ago :).

After meeting we became really great friends, we did the whole marriage thing in SWG for fun, the guild and friends had a wonderful time and had lots of laughs. We both attended the 1st SWG FanFest and when he moved to the same city as me everything got even better.

So yeah, great things can happen from meeting people on MMO's, I mean it's for sure not the first place I would go looking but hey... sometimes things just happen.

You're missing a lot, but if your mom and dad didn't explain that to you then I guess you'll have to figure that out on your own.

Forming relationships with people online prior to meeting them in person is delusional.

lol...I've had several RP marriages and I haven't ever fantasized about any of them...It's all good fun Roleplaying...maybe when you're old enough you understand that not everything must have sexual meaning in it.
