Are these pledges they're getting every month mostly new consumers, or are they continued pledges from existing backers?
Both.
Have fun
I should have been more specific, as it would be very anomalous for the pledges to have exclusively come from one source or another. Allow me to rephrase:
Is there any information as to which camp the lion's share of this money is coming from?

Getting the most epic space sim in decades is FAR from a slap in the face.
Besides they have lots of other revenue sources, like episode expansions for SQ42 and other stuff. We will see all the stretch goals eventually, but even what we have now is way more than any other game of its type.

About ship choice I suggest all the STLYoungblood videos, indepth info about the ships and their roles:
As my personal take just get the lowest priced starter package (make sure you are buying a package and not just a ship). The packages include Star Citizen (Online) $45 and you can add Squadron42 (Campaign) for more +15$ or the way around.
Don't pledge anymore than that and then just play to get ingame credits and fly all the other ships available.
Concerning PTU and no loaners that's a no issue, you can fly anything, just ask in chat and say thank you before flying off.

I'm not sure why anyone, at this point, would opt to take anything more than a wait and see stance with their wallets kept firmly inside their pockets.
Are these pledges they're getting every month mostly new consumers, or are they continued pledges from existing backers?
I would say that the majority of sales are to existing backers. Last month they raised $1.4 million, they sold the Prospector concept design for $140 which gives 10,000 sales which is only 0.77% of backers, very comfortably within the margins for whale culture.

Anyone who complains of whale culture is really saying, "he's got more money than me and I don't like how he's spending it because it's not my money....wwwwaaaaaahhhhhhh!!!"

Unfortunately there are no objective, verifyable numbers for that.
The following official numbers are known (although there are some that think some or all of them are fake):
a) Total amount of crowdfunding money gathered
b) Total amount of Active Star Citizens (thats total amount of registered website accounts, which is NOT equal to the number of backers that paid money and have chosen a pledge package with one or more ships)
c) UEE Fleet which (according to dev information) is the number of player ships in the game (players can have anywhere from 1 to dozens of ships)
Any numbers derived from those numbers are subjective and based on personal assumptions. So estimates about the "lion's share of the money" are per definition just speculation.

Who's complaining? Posting that something fits into the industry recognised numbers has nothing to do with my personal opinion on the matter.
The funding spreadsheet on google has a chart titled "Citizens vs UEE fleet development", and in that they have stat "Citizens without Ships". It looks like they calculate that simply as total citizen minus UEE fleet size.
I wonder whether the info on chart is wrong, or the info on that thread is wrong. Do you maybe know any more sources about what that UEE Fleet stat means?
I see a big list of ships they've sold, are there no ships at all completely finished as yet?
No ship is completely finished until launch day.
Have fun
Yeah that's what I thought, they haven't finished a single one.
Pretty incredible after 5 years.
LOL!!!!! The PU is full of completed ships having a blast!
Pun intended
your statement is in direct opposition to what Erillion is saying though so which one is it?
No it's not in direct opposition
You're confusing the subject by trying to lump finished ships with ships still in concept, as if the backer who spent the money didn't know the difference.

hes saying no ship is complete until launch day and your saying there are already completed ships in the PU. So no its not intellectual dishonesty its me pointing out that you are saying something that doesn't agree with what Erillion has said.
You'll have to do a little critical thinking on your own. At the beginning of the year, CIG announced they would be moving to a monthly content patch. 2.4 is supposed to the patch that adds the ability to save your state from one session to another. It is hard to think of any game that doesn't have this ability--but for Star Citizen it is ground breaking/never been done before/revolutionary for some reason. The bottom line--we sit here in June waiting for a patch that was supposed to come in April.
Well, that isn't really true. If you want to play 2.4, it is easy--just become a subscriber. And that is another contentious point. Star Citizen was supposed to be buy once to play. Early backers were supposed to be the alpha testers. Subscriptions were supposedly to support the three weekly videos provided by CIG and not have any in-game perks. Yet here we are, two and half years past when the CEO of the company told us they would release a product and stop crowdfunding. Subscribers get access to the current code, while regular backers are left watching twitch streams. Every time CIG says they are going to try and release something--that something turns out to be too difficult a task for the developers and the deadlines are forgotten. If you want a good example of this, research Star Marine. Hyped by CIG for months, backers were told they would be playing in weeks, not months or years--yet here we are a year past the anticipated release and Star Marine has been effectively canceled.
The only thing the people working at CIG are able to do on time is sell concept ships. Ships that don't exist in the game are constantly introduced and sold to backers. And this more than anything should freak out folks researching the project. There are so many ships still to be created that will be multiplayer and support some type of gameplay mechanic. The problem is--not only do the ships not exist, but the game mechanics to make mining, or salvage, or cargo hauling are not even in the game. Sure they are supposed to be in the game some day. And here is where the critical thinking comes into play. If it is taking this long to get pants on a player--how long do you think it is going to take to get things like an economy or a universe filled with NPCs to work?
Another telling sign. This game is supposed to be open development. But you won't learn much by watching the shows or reading the status reports produced by CIG. You need to read lots of other forums to figure out what is going on. This thread, for example, is a great example. The game was supposed to be released in 2014. When did we find out 2014 was not going to be the year? In Q4/2014--Q4 2014 CIG announced they would release SQ42 episodically in 2015. Q4 in 2015 rolls around and we findout, nope 2016! Do we have a new date? Nope--2016 is still the official line from CIG--the "most open game developer" of any game company ever!! But just read through this thread--not a single person thinks 2016 is realistic. When will we learn that CIG has missed their release window yet again? I suspect in Q4/2106 we will be told 2017. This time next year, a new backer will create a thread just like this and it will have the same responses--just with +1 added to year.
The final issue. There is no publisher with deep pockets from other games to support the development. Gamers are paying for this entire project. There was plenty of money in 2014 and 2015. Will CIG have the funds to continue development through 2017? Only time will tell.

Thought this was a good post worth sharing.
"The bottom line--we sit here in June waiting for a patch that was supposed to come in April." First paragraph moot. This happens with every single game ever developed.
"Star Marine has been effectively canceled." Second paragraph moot. The FPS is working and in game, Star Marine was never cancelled, it was postponed for more important tasks.
"Sure they are supposed to be in the game some day." Third paragraph moot. That is the very definition of crowdfunding and being a backer, it's a gamble.
"This game is supposed to be open development." Fourth paragraph moot. SC is open development, to backers. Nobody promised that you could follow everything through forums and videos.
The release date was push back because instead of the 12-15 million they were looking for, they got over 100 million so the scoped was expanded, majority of backers agreed.
"There is no publisher with deep pockets from other games to support the development." Final issue is moot. It's precisely because there's no investors with deep pockets that SC won't become the buggy, pushed out the door AAA game, like all the others we've seen over the last 10 years.

aww this is cute!
Erillion was sharing with you. CIG says "No ship is completely finished until launch day" all the time, it means they can change the ship at anytime before release of the game.
However, in the meantime, we can still fly them. So both statements are true, glad I could help.
And you changed the wording in your latest reply. If you want to say they are fly able in game like another poster said then I would have no problem but since you said it's full of completed ships then there is a problem.
Your condensending aside you should sit down with the other fans who are established in this forum and all get your stories straight before hand.

But we don't know if they are completed, only CIG knows that, didn't I just explain that to you?
So if CIG doesn't make anymore changes to the Constellation, then it is a complete ship, isn't it.
