I agree with your assessment and I would like to add is the lack of story content? Will there even be a story line to follow and questing and such? They really have not talked much about this and if you can't meet up with your mates then this game will need a lot more then just fancy stuff.... it will need a good story line and questing to go with all this fancy stuff.
technically speaking I to would like to 'add' a 'lack of story content' :) just playing but yeah, if they go the story route isnt of the crafting building route, I aint buying

Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.

For all the supposed hype that has been generated about this game, I have seen very little and know even less about it.  I like Space Sims(or whatever you want to call this), and I play them as they come along.

I would hope that as a community we would be starting to move away from the hollow promises and over-hyped concepts and moving (back too actually) a results based support for a game.  For too long now we have been soon fed tripe and been told this will be the next great genre changing/WoW killing/cutting edge game.  Thus far none have delivered on that.

Demand results, vote with your wallet, derail the hype train, or at least leave it at the station until there is something solid to be excited about.

If you want a new idea, go read an old book.

In order to be insulted, I must first value your opinion.

As long as idiots ( myself included ) are throwing money at so called game developers for concept art, and big fish stories, there are going to be criminals out there taking advantage of us. Without regulation video game development is akin to the wild west, you may have a few white hats here and there, but for the most part they are predominately black hats, sticking up stage coaches, trains, banks, whatever it takes to live the black hat lifestyle at the expense of others. We need consumer protection laws and enforcement to make sure game studios deliver what they promise, and that the game they deliver actually operates well on the system specs they quote.

Yeah I stopped caring about this once I heard that it is, essentially, a single player game. I might buy it on sale someday, I desperately want an awesome space game, but I also want to play with friends.
Now Playing: Bless / Summoners War
Looking forward to: Crowfall / Lost Ark / Black Desert Mobile

My issue is after years of delays and finally a big yay release day is finally here, opening sales and taking our money, then they have the balls to delay it another 3 months with only a pretty lame " we are getting death threats " apology. Of course you are getting death threats, people are not idiots people know you needed cash so made up a release date you have zero intention of ever meeting for your cash grab. These game devs always think they are the smartest people in the room and the rest of us are total morons, this is not the first time a game developer has lied for a cash infusion.

Personally, after these guys track record so far, I will be shocked if they release this year.
But in reality it's usually the people making the death threats that are the idiotic ones.

I guess I'm just not looking in the right places, because I've heard and seen almost nothing about No Man's Sky, nor do I have a single friend salivating over the game.

All my friends are looking at it the same as I am: it looks like a very novel concept, so we'll be reading about it once it's actually released and make a decision on whether or not it's worth a buy.

I don't really agree that it's received unbridled hype... At least, not when we consider the day and age where games like Destiny were touted (before release) as revolutionizing the FPS genre and AAA MMORPG releases claim to be saviors of the genre over and over.

I've seen more articles about all the hype this game is getting, than actual hype about the game itself.

I could see No Man's Sky disappointing players if the game simply didn't manage to fulfill its basic set of promised features. However, looking at an early access game called Subnautica for example which appears to be doing relatively well, although more of a survival game rather than simply an exploration one like NMS. I think NMS has a chance of doing quite well and not disappoint players or at the very least it's targeted audience (because let's face it, some people are going to buy it thinking it's a game for them and realize it's the opposite 2 hours in).

All of this is a recipe for disappointment. At this stage in the game’s hype cycle, there is no coming back from the bristling excitement of fans who want the game to be everything they’ve ever dreamed of in a space game.

Sounds Exactly like Star Citizen. Time for an article about that maybe?

comparing NMS to Scam Citizen? are you fucking kidding me? hahahahaha the difference is NMS will actually come out in August and SC will never be out. Jesus christ MMORPG needs better writers.

I like the anti-hype nature of this article. I admit I have convinced myself NMS will be amazing. It was going to be my summer game. We need more articles like this that can give people like myself a kick in the hype-o-campus. Thanks, author-guy.

Meh. I'm too lazy to cancel my pre-order. Yes, it'll probably be disappointing... but it's not like I'm not disappointed by 90% of the computer games from the past 10 years. I'm kinda used to it.

well that and NMS is a cartoon and Scam Citizen is not. There is that detail.

I mean I was thinking of SC but I decided instead that StarMade was just as immersive....oh wait nope

Not sure what hype train people have been riding for NMS, but I've (mostly) been keeping up with the news and it's never presented itself as much more than a procedurally generated universe that you can run / fly around and shoot a few things in; it's certain never promised to be 'the messiah' that SC has built itself up as.

The main problem that I see for NMS is that the main loop (explore, gather, upgrade) will probably be quite shallow, and either be over far too quickly, or drag out into annoyance. It will still be fun for a while, but I expect it to be gather dust by the end of the month and only brought at to impress non-technical friends at parties :/

It won't disappoint me, as I have extremely low expectations.

Being an Bartle explorer type this game (and Elite:Dangerous) will give me fun for years to come. I can only explore 0.000000001 % of all possible locations and only 0.000000001 % of the planetary surfaces of these locations, but it allows me to wind down after a hectic work day. In Star Wars Galaxies I was touring my harvesters and did my sightseeing on the various planets - not an exciting activity, but it is a bit similar to meditation. In Elite:Dangerous I am driving around moons just for the sake of dune racing ;-) In NMS I will be Livingston and Stanley, Lewis and Clark, Humbolt and Darwin etc. .. discovering new places, new flora, new fauna, new species.

    Have fun

You mean you will experience new varieties of a bunch of randomly generated places ;)

That is probably the best quick description of NMS I've ever seen, lol

I expect to get 2 or 3 months of great entertainment from it, and then I will most likely uninstall and never touch it again. Which means it will be on par with most games I've enjoyed.

There are games that I've spent a 1000 hours on, but those I can count on the fingers of one hand after 25 years of gaming. I do not expect NMS to be one of those.
