I'd have to go with Total War: Warhammer. I have never played a Dark Souls game, I don't like ragey games like that lol. Darkest Dungeon is a close second. It came out of nowhere and is a really great game as well.
As for MMO of the year, I guess it would have to be Black Desert. I play it still from time to time, but it's not as good as TWWH or Darkest Dungeon.
I don't think I've bought and played any that released in 2016 TBH.. I'm drawing a complete blank in terms of titles that released since January.
I don't even know when the games I've been playing came out. I guess Dark Souls 3 is my defacto since it's the only one that I know for sure came out this year.

South Park ; The Fractured But Whole. Releasing Dec. 6 2016. Game of the year needs to be a game that you will keep playing after finishing it, and seeing that the only games I tend to replay over and over are from the SNES era in the 90's, I can't really name a 2016 game released up to now a "Game of the year" nor a 2015... nor a 2014... nor 2013... well maybe FF14 I did play it hardcore for almost 10 months and before that it was EVE-Online for almost 8 years. Games released in 2016 up to now, played them, half of them not even finished, uninstalled out of boredom. So yeah, Ogre Battle 4 life baby~!
So there you go, my picks would be EVE-Online / FF14:ARR in the MMO department, the only 2 titles that kept me interested for more then a month.
Sorry in advance for not complying with the rules, it's pretty hard to vote any particular copy / paste game.

Somebody, somewhere has better skills as you have, more experience as you have, is smarter than you, has more friends as you do and can stay online longer. Just pray he's not out to get you.
Hearts of Iron IV, the game is unfinished, the AI sucks and some of the tech trees and national foci are just wierd. But for my money it is the best game released in 2016.
My favourite warhammer so far. I'm still somewhat struggling with map tactics but that is great! The previous total wars were quite samey (tho still awesome) but, playing as greenskins, I cannot trade with anyone and I make barely any money from my settlements, its all from conquest! Has been a challenge to keep my armies constantly fighting and earning, but I love the battles and the units.
Currently Playing: WAR RoR - Spitt rr80 Black Orc | Scrotling rr6X Squig Herder | Scabrous rr5X Shaman
Oh thats right, EVE isn't a game, it's a virtual world. Nevermind.
I cannot imagine the kind of mind that it takes to classify Trade Wars as a "virtual world."
"Me and the Missus went to Wall Street to spend some time on the trading floor for our vacation. Whooooooo doggies, it wuz a great time! Best vacation ever!"
For games that came out in 2016, its going to be either BDO or Overwatch to my mind, though as good as Overwatch obviously is, i think i would stick my vote on BDO, shame can't vote for both though.
I am currently madly in love with BDO so that gets my vote.
Just discovered that the houses in different parts of the cities are sometimes 2 or 3 stories. Now I'm on a mission to get furniture and and decorate. Need silver and amity.

To each his own, I suppose.
Eve Online is closer to being a virtual world than any game in the genre except Second Life.
Also, your example would only be useful if on the way to the Wall Street, you were ran over by some twat in an SUV who stopped, took your wallet and phone, and then jumped back in the SUV and backed over you as they turned around to go shopping.
I'll have to go with the only game I purchased this year that was released this year. That is Fallout 4.

Something Awful this way comes.

What has come out to choose from? Isn't it a bit early?

Horizon Zero Dawn looks amazing so it may take it from Uncharted.

Oh, snap. That was the PS4 game I was mostly looking foward to this year.
