The Chronicles of Elyria KickStarter page has been updated with a cool new article that lays out three totally separate and individual ways that players will be able to experience Elyria prior to the full release of the MMO which has about eighteen months of development left.

I think this is great. I wish more games in development would take a similar approach and give players an opportunity to interact with the game world while it's in the works. Not only does it help the time pass, but it provides a valuable opportunity for devs to have players test out features and systems and to provide feedback. I say win-win!

They are certainly good at stoking the hype machine.  If anyone thinks this game will be available in 13 months they are dreaming.

I wholeheartedly agree. I remember being a member of an RP community pre-launch for City of Heroes. We spent time creating detailed backstories for our heroes and even collaborated stories between our heroes that led to the formation of the Supergroups we had planned. Not only did it keep us invested in the game world before release, we also had a solid group of folks to explore the world with, day one.

Seeing developers actively support this kind of pre-launch activity with actual game systems is pretty cool.

they can make this mmo in 13 months like i can build a flying care in 13 months. I bet they change their wording to a early alpha in 13 months- i would be pissed off.

    Are they hiding something?
Like, some huge deep pocket angel investor that will throw in 10's of millions into development that no one knows about?
  • chelvaricchelvaric Member UncommonPosts: 47
@geezerGamer they use systems that they already have to develop for the mmo it doesnt cost that much to make a mud based on something they have to make anyway

    Incredible !

I think the success of the Kickstarter has convinced this team that the public will believe absolutely anything, lol. And pay for it in advance...

Not only will this tiny team build the most complex MMO ever designed, but they'll do it 18 months !

And while they're doing this, they will build a offline single-player version of their game, which will be ready in 12 months or so...

AND, seeing as the above 2 projects will not stretch their intellects sufficiently, they will also develop, test, launch and operate a MUD that will be fully integrated with the main MMO !

Anyone who thinks its coming in 13months apparantly cant read either. It has at least 18 months left.

Im really excited about this game but Its not like I dont have alot left to do until then. Hopefully CU will launch soon. That gives me a couple years with it before I move on to something else.

Susie I agree that this sounds great on paper.  It's just straining believability though to think that they are going to launch all this stuff and get their no wipe paid headstart going just over a year from now.

The only deliverable they have had post Kickstarter was a failure to launch web store.   I just think it's crazy to think they will dedicate time to these concepts.  Even if there is some tangential correlation with the main game.

That does seem to be an issue of theirs.

Thirteen months?  Wow, that's an incredibly accelerated timeline for such a small development team.  Any idea how much of this game was completed prior to the KS campaign?  Most MMO's of any significance take close to five years to develop.

Nice, if they can pull this off they may get my money after all. Much better then waiting for the game to launch before deciding. Available to alpha 1backers only. Guess the wait will continue.

They have split their game into three manageable units and built them. This is how you build an MMO. A GUI to a backend database.

First they build a single player GUI to test out its functionality. During Alpha most MMOs are single player games. Because the database is still in planning. But they can test out the UI, NPC interaction, combat, skills & crafting and several other things. This is client testing.

Second, after the database has been planned. Then you can test it with the new web portal. The listed test features: form and change alliances, declare war, fight over resources and invest in research. These are all forms of create, get and set database variables. These are all examples of small data changes, with scrutiny for data errors.

Third, is ElyriaMUD, a text interface to the database. The client will interpret player actions and set up a token string command to send to the server. This is typical MMO communication. And this will be the first form of stress test the servers will get

I feel this is an excellent way to test the components of an MMO.

    Even telemarketers wouldn't think that.
It costs money to play.  Therefore P2W.

It seems like the way to make MMOs today is to spend lots of time building anything but the actual game while waiting to get the financing of your main game. When the team is deep into development you start talking about launching a minimum viable product instead of the full product just so you get some extra cash to finish your game.

No chance in hell the mmorpg is fully released before 2020 unless they do it the landmark way of taking a dump in a back alley calling it released.

"I do believe in fairies, I do, I do, I do."

My guess is all of this will be to sell additional tiers of early access to raise more funding.

18 months to full launch (whatever that means these days), it will be a modern MMORPG miracle if they pull it off.

    Absolutely !

The team have just created TWO new opportunities for monetization, in addition to the original game.
    They're on a roll...

From what I have read these are just part of the package you receive by donating on KS. I must have missed the info where they said they were charged additions. How much will they cost?

Currently they said they will give them to folks with Alpha 2 access or above.  So $200 and up.

Im sure they will sell it as an add on too but no price is advised.

If they can pull all this off this game could be a real special game.

Wait until they finish building their online fundraising webshop.

Y'know, that ready-made webshop they bought so they didn't have to build one themselves.

I have no shadow of a doubt that there will be a variety of funding packages with differing tiers of benefits on offer once they get the webshop done. These "additional access options" will fit nicely into the funding packages...

It turns out the front-end of the payment processing shop couldn't handle their influence point system or the concept of an upgrade so they had to rewrite the front end of the shop themselves.

You would also think they would have started work on the store prior to 1 week before the end of the Kickstarter.   You'd be wrong on both counts...

Still not convinced but I am encouraged hearing they will have a MUD to test systems. The story engine is the big "next gen" feature that stands to make their game different and if they are to pull it off, testing it in a MUD environment would probably be the way to go.

OK, resume the onslaught of doubt and cynicism.
