I would say that the Lord of the Rings and Dungeons & Dragons IPs need new MMOs any way, but I am 100% sure that any sequel or successor to those will suck hard. If they go it will be a shame.
MMORPG players are often like Hobbits: They don't like Adventures

Suppose someone picked up the lotr rights. How do you see the game as being different from the current one?
Also, I am brain farting right now but which company was making the lotr mmorpg before turbine?

Not a fan of layoffs and I hope that those people layed off will get great packages and placed somewhere soon quickly with other companies.
That being said, I cannot cannot cannot WAIT for this IP to be given to another development team so we can get it out of the hands of these people and get it into the hands of a gaming company that cares such as Zenimax or Blizzard!

I hope you are right but do you think anyone will really pick it up after this?
Apparently Turbine's licensing of LoTR is valid until 2017. Maybe they're just going to ride it out until then and shut it down at that point.
So we should expect a terrible, horrendous EA rendition of LOTRO in 2017 I take it? Aragorn's lost (re: totally made up) brother becomes the new Witch King of Angmar, and a battle for the mastery of Middle Earth ensues? They hurl ghosts and castles and black riders and hobbits at each other until someone submits?
LOTRO did a lot of things wrong... the lore, however, was about as close to the source material (or, in the instances where it strayed or grew, felt at least plausible) as could be expected for a video game. I anticipate any future Peter Jackson-type Lord of the Rings game to be flat-out atrocious.

With the budget and development cycle required for an mmo, you wouldn't see anything new until around 2020. But as I mentioned in another post above, I just don't see it happening.
Even if Turbine goes under or decides not to renew their license for LoTR, I really don't see another company making a LoTR mmo at this point.
IF Warner Bros made it availble .. Disney would snap it up quick .....
I think Disney stopped making games. That's why Skylanders got cancelled. They're shopping all their stuff out and primarily to EA, at least for Star Wars.
making games is not really relevant .. they may, they may not, they may hire another Dev /Pub to handle that ... .. But either way ,They would be all over that IP tho .. There are Many things tied to an IP...

i may be mistaken but was it Games Workshop
Sierra Online was originally supposed to be making a Middle Earth mmo back in 1998. Vivendi then bought the rights to make video games based on LoTR, and then made the agreement with Turbine.

Thats it .. Thx for the reminder , and if i remember the original trailer from Sierra at that time was really good looking
There were lay offs last year and everyone said it was all over, no more updates, and so on. But they came anyway, and the game just got a raid on top.

the worst thing is that other companies can't start developing a LOTRO game unless they have the license in hand. That means the next LOTR MMO wouldn't be available until the early to mid 2020's.
UPDATE: We have received the following statement from Turbine:
Turbine is transitioning into a free-to-play, mobile development studio, and as a result we are eliminating some positions. The Lord of the Rings Online and Dungeons and Dragons online games will continue to operate as they do now. Re-focusing and reducing the studio size was a difficult decision for the company, and we are grateful to all of the Turbine staff for their considerable contributions.
"Operate as they do now" probably means no new content, maybe some bug fix patches, but perhaps development is at an end there.
F2P mobile development studio...well, sad as it is to say, I can't blame them since that's the currently exploding market. Heck, just look at Pokemon Go. One game like that, they can make tons more.

Yeah, for now. But how much longer?
Basically, life support until the subscription numbers and store purchases dips too low to sustain a reasonable margin of income.
So...depends on how fast the userbase dwindles.
What's really a shame is that LOTRO and DDO can never be emulated or made open source since Tokien Legacy Foundation (or whatever) and Wizards of the Coast would never allow it -- fans could do something special with both, I think.
Ah well...I guess I'll go back to LOTRO for my once-in-awhile game until they pull the plug.
I am currently playing F2P and have purchased everything I need to play pretty much. . no future revenue there for them. Hard to say what will happen but I am guessing they will either change the store or ride it out for as long as they can. . however long that is. There is a lot of chatter in /world right now, naming the staff etc. Hope they can pick up work somewhere else.
the game is coming up on 10 years, this is not at all surprising, 10 years is quite the feat in this MMO market, certainly not a failure, but also not unexpected.

Well there is a rumour that mmorpg.com is being taken down soon. Now some say this is only for a new look but we have heard that one before. So maybe they have to get this in early ....
Eh?
It was a joke Forgrimm - in response to the suggestion that mmorpg.com should have waited for confirmation before posting and the recent "attempt" by mmorpg.com to update their website. Bill obviously got it!
Anyway. The confirmed news is that LotR and DDO will continue as they are. Now what that means we don't know. However taken at face value - for LotR at least for now - it suggests that there will be further new content. The game has had several new content drops in the last 18 months although whether it is covering its costs is always hard to say. (Edit: would appear that the lay-offs do include LotR - and it seems DDO as well)
From a story perspective however when I last player 3-4 months ago there was a "feeling" that the story was moving to a finish. That Mordor was "in sight" and "the end was near". Maybe not this year but 2017 quite possibly. And if that does come to pass that would provide a marketing angle. Although whether WarnerBros wanted to renew the rights - sure they could if they wanted - that's another question.
And that would be nice but it could just be wishful thinking on my part. For, imo, the story has been faithfully treated, the game has been well done and WarnerBros deserve some of the credit for that for supporting - and continuing to support - the game. And yes there are detractors but at the end of the day it all comes down to money. And a reality check is sometimes necessary.
And of course these cuts demonstrate once again that some areas of the market are struggling to stay afloat.
