I enjoy single player games more than MMOs.  I've finished all that I have started with the exception of:

System Shock 2 because of a re-spawning zombie with a shotgun. Yes, I rage quit.

Area 51 (the Midway free one). This game became ridiculously hard on normal with stupid save points.  Another rage quit.

For my part, I tend to play games part way and then shelve them. If it's really good and hooked me, I'll chip away at it over time, but a game really has to be something special to keep me coming back.

I'm the exact same way. If it hooks at the start I will try to get into it, but actually finishing it is a different story. I find as I get older I'm less impressed with everything. Maybe I just played way too many games.

MMOS were my game finishing killer. I found I didn't finish a lot of great games because I would be drawn back into a raid or playing with my friends. Now that I am taking a little break from MMOs, I am actually finishing some great games and am glad I did.

There is more to numbers than simply numbers and why i always hate numbers because they mean so little.

Is a game finished because it is too simple, too small?

Are games that are not finished still being played more than any other game?
Example what if player A has 500 hours in a game but never finished it whilst player B has 40 ours, finished and done with game.
It can simply mean Player B was in some race mode to prove something whilst Player A is simply enjoying a game more.Player B finished but might actually consider the game bad and won't go back and play it again, while player A continues to replay same game over and over.

A mmorpg can NEVER be finished ,unless it goes offline lol.
So what can we take from player A to player B?Nothing at all,all that matters is each game to each individual,a group sum does NOT matter what so ever to each individual.

That list makes me think that almost half of people finish good games and much fewer people finish bad games. There are some exceptions like Darkest Dungeon, but that there are that many people that finish some of these games that take up to 40+ hours is honestly pretty impressive to me.

Guilty as charged. I haven't finished an RPG in years. I finish adventure games, but always end up stalling in RPG's.

I am glad you are a teacher because it means we can both talk about what it means to truly be a teacher as I am a teacher myself.

A few months ago I did the exact same research and actually looked at Steam Statistics to actually see how many players actually STARTED the game that they purchased or got out of the first Mission to the game. The answer would surprise you. Go back and look at that before looking at the ending and that alone should spark another area of this whole argument. I will leave you to discover as if I give you a conclusion, it means one will be biased to prove it or disprove it rather than scientifically analyzing data to arrive at a conclusion.

It should also be noted that for Japanese Games making their way to steam that a lot of those games have low numbers because the people on Steam are the Third Wave of people buying the game. This means you get two kinds of people. The first are people who wish to have a PC Version of one of their favorite games that they have already trashed to pieces on the console. The second are people who are just trying out the game due to the opinions of others...

    For example....

I own every Final Fantasy Game up to Final Fantasy XIII - Lightning Returns. That was the only Final Fantasy that turned me off to not beat it. All the other ones I managed to finish. I also loved FF XIV. However, most of the people I speak to who love Final Fantasy have actually finished the game, but they played the game when the game originally came out.

Some of these games on Steam come out anywhere from 2 - 10 years after the original game has been released and quite frankly is up there in order to be picked up on PC and for the developer to make a final pile of cash from an old project. In such ways steam is wonderful in breathing new life to old games, but an old game still is in the very end... an Old Game.

    Also, to be honest...
Half of those games on that list I did not give a damn about. I tried them and just didn't care about them. I am not going to finish anything that bores me to death in the first part of the game, and I don't care what the fanbase says on it. :)

All your statistics have proven is that so much hype exists in these games that companies are amazing at getting people to buy games and then not deliver on their products. Same happens in MMORPGs when the hype meter is way up but then the release isn't what is expected. You simply managed to prove also is that fewer and fewer people actually think for themselves and buy into the hype....

...and the result is that more people are not happy with the games they have paid for, but since most software has no return policy and developers know this, once you give them your money, that is all that counts. :(

Sorry, but this is sad and true at the same time..

Whatever happened to the ancient argument about people RMTing their own MMORPG gear on Ebay and developers saying "Oh that is a no no, we are coming after you" and then the same companies turning around and saying "Oh what? Thats a great idea, lets all RMT our games too....." and end up with a host of F2Ps that are cash cows. When did I wake up to find out that everyone accepted such a system?

Sorry, but this last paragraph was to prove at how easy people are pacified by simply being bombarded and overwhelmed by the same thing. When people tell me how popular a game is the first thing I see is steam statistics on it to find that in MANY RPGs, that only half of the population that paid for the game has actually STARTED THE GAME.

    I liked reading your article.
Since you are a teacher, it means i can be much more critical with you. ^_^

Enjoy the summer, since September means truly returning to work in an area many people think they understand and assume they can do better than you, but are 100% clueless what truly goes on in there. ^_^

Well there is something missing from the stats.

The FFX remaster for example is one that is a tad bit off when looking at these numbers.
The reason is that i have finished the regular version twice and only bought the remaster for whatever reason ,i really don't know,i think i was expecting a better or different game .None the less it gives the impression i have never finished FFX but i have ...twice,just not the remastered version. Then the only reason i never finished that is because i went back to playing a game i love ...FFXI,so i have no time for any other game right now.
