The whole HoT expansion is a giant mistake. I think no matter how they try to tweak it, you just can't turn a pile of poo into gold. They wasted their resources into raid, in a game that didn't need one to be successful. Their decision making has been on free fall since fractal introduction.
Which is all well and good. I'll be proven right with the end of the content draught while NCSoft keeps their sights on WildStar, which will pull every trick in the book until it is inevitably and unfortunately shut down.
What's wrong with Wildstar? :P I don't see those numbers on the list.
hmm, I think the number was so small they just didn't bother including it
Damn those numbers are small.
Well the steam launch did provide it a couple thousand more players, the issue is again they didn't end up retaining a majority of those players. I'm super afraid it was the final chance for the game, I'm hoping it doesn't get cancelled soon but it is a non NCsoft developed game not doing well being published by them, which by their track record, add all of those up and it's a quick shut down.

Maybe. I hope so. But somehow, I don't think "Proper context" is the topic of discussion in the board rooms at NCSoft.
We want to get away from the tank & healer + dps trinity..... Then we'll focus on group play with no trinity.....
.....and we'll find out what others already know: That without those specializations, group play becomes an unstructured mash up.
There's a reason why the trinity works in group play - because it's a damn good format that companies have tried to change for change sake - and ended up with something that only serves to show how good the trinity system is for groups.
Good group content mmo's have not changed the trinity, what they have done is allowed your character to change for various roles.
As a big GW1 fan I was hoping for big things from GW2. Yet, I left 3 months after launch due to it being insanely casual oriented, and there's been nothing but negative news since. At the very least there should of been capes =P.

Capes? No way! For sure, NCSoft will kill that. They kill games with capes.
For me I left when HoT was coming around. I disliked both the price they were and still are charging for it and the direction the game was going in, so I never felt as an existing player that it was value for money. GW2 at launch was fun for me but with each major update they kept dumbing down and changing systems that I felt never needed to be touched.
Add onto that I had zero confidence in their balancing team who seem to be oblivious to the gulf in certain classes with others. So with that said I can't really see myself going back to GW2 even if they lowered the price.

I play casually so I'm hoping the game doesn't get shut down. I enjoy the art style of it along it's action combat. Can't get anyone I know to play it so playing solo sucks..
HoT pretty much killed GW2's hype going forward. It was just underwhelming for so many players.
The heavy price tag hurt it more than anything. They tried to justify it by including the base game, but they could've just had an upgraded version for those loyal customers who already bought GW2's base game. They thought they were Blizzard and could get away with that price tag.
The expansion also separated players who didn't buy HoT, which went against their original vision. They said they wanted to learn from GW1 and not separate players with DLC/expansions, but totally reneged on that promise with HoT.
There's a lot more negatives i could write about, but this post is already getting long. Haha.

It's not really like a for sure thing, I'm just basing it off of the previous non NCsoft developed MMORPG's they published that got shut down like Auto Assault, City of Heroes/Villains, Exteel and Tabula Rasa.

City of Heroes/Villains was amazing. Shame they let it go.
To be honest, if you don’t have the expansion by now your either not playing gw2 or your a new player still trying to play as much of the f2p as possible before you get to the expansion content. That, and there hasn’t been a whole lot in the gem store to warrant consistent purchase from every player. If there was, I bet you people will start calling it pay to win.
As for HOT, I think HOT was great. There I said it. I loved that it was much harder then the base game, I enjoyed the new large scale events, I think the elite specialization "made" classes even more powerful so they can deal with the much harder content. Plus, Anet said a while ago they would be adding more elite specialization later in the games life span. So Once the next ones come out, there will be even more diversity of play.
I love gliding and I really enjoy the raiding content (I raid two or three times a week and usually get really good rewards from them) The updates leading after HOT were also pretty good. Like, I can't even think of a bad update that I really hated or disliked, besides like; bunker Mesmers. Now, that was pretty bad from a spvp perspective, even if It did have counters. (They are dead now) The desert borderland maps are opinion based at this point. I, including many others really liked the maps. It was just too large. If your not able to get over the fact that the place has traps and an underground area then theres nothing I can say that will help convince you other then "Learn the map and adapt."
Dungeons are profitable! (Look at the recent update) The recent fractal update is great! The new bloodstone map is amazing and so was the story for it. The new pvp map is actually pretty fun. Needs to be a bit smaller in my opinion but I like it. WvW, I will admit I spent the least amount of time with, has its maps back. And there is proof Anet is talking with people from community.
Unless people give specific examples as to why they dislike the entire thing, the misconception will continue, because so far from what Ive seen and read its all been like either "learn to play," "You do know theres another way to do that right?" "Skill over gear buddy...remember?" "Thats been updated," "Thats been changed," "That class is more than viable." "This new system is better then having no system so...." etc...
I'll agree about the content drought, but in my opinion thats very subjective. While some people would say theres nothing to do, I and most other people who continue to play till this day were doing like 41 different things in the game. Hell I made a list, I could re-post but i don't want this current post to go any longer because I feel like I've already written too much. So pretty much, your mileage may very but so long as there is free will people will always have different views on things.
Little known fact. Anet has an escape clause. They can, if cut off by NCSoft, break off and become an independent developer with their license. This gives them a rather unique advantage over the less fortunate shutdown studios.

For me it wasn't HoT that killed it for me, nor does the gem store matter to me. It was them doubling down on their failed experiment of "no trinity" combat coupled with HoT pushing people towards group combat.
I love all aspects of the PvE side of GW2. I think it is about as perfect as an MMO can get in many aspects. But outside of solo content, the combat in GW2 is poor. It comes down to the binary nature of their design. To ensure there's no tanks everyone can basically get one shot for being at the wrong place at the wrong time. And you WILL be at the wrong place at the wrong time at some point. Since you're basically one shot there's no sense to stack anything but DPS. So in trying to get away from the "limited" nature of the trinity they forced the players into an even more limited meta.
When I saw the direction they were taking with HoT I left. No amount of Gem store shenanigans will get me to go back. Fixing the abysmal group combat will.
But they won't do that. Which is sad. Because I'd be playing it to this day if it weren't so horribly frustrating and unfulfilling.
You nailed it, their group content just blows, and for me that is the main reason why I play MMOs.

Interesting info, got a link to that?
If it's real, it's probably an option giving ANET 1st crack to buy out. But at what cost?

Neither company provides hard financials about their games or size of the current playing, paying customer base.
Nothing anywhere close to the transparency NC has always shared.

I hardly play GW2 anymore really. I never play WOW. Some people go back to WOW. People in general do not.
