I like how they are calling it "bullshots". It most certainly is bullshit to show non-screenshots in the screenshot areas.
It is a continual slap in the face to see the "bullshot" that NMS is insinuating their game is on their Store Page. Glad Steam is doing something about this.

Lets be honest. If you were going into WoW expecting anything other than mediocre graphics at best then you deserve to be bullshoted.
But yes, fuck NMS.

This policy change is i.r.o. still shots, so all kinds of shenanigans can still be included in the video clips (which probably have far more impact than the static screenshots anyways).
But at least it's a small step in the right direction...

What should have been done to WoW?
because this is exactly what the game play is like

While I'm not a big fan of how WoW is these days (though I like Legion more than WoD)...
That is a cinematic, and they don't advertise screenshots of the cinematic implying that is how it actually looks. They make cinematics like little mini-movies, which they have done for a while.
Never once, even back in vanilla did I think "wow I was ripped off, I thought the game was going to look like a game from the year 2050!"
I dunno what dumb ass would even think that lol. If anyone ever thought the cinematic was how WoW was gonna look needs to get mental help.
On the other hand, there are games like Witcher 3, No Man's Sky and a bunch of others that advertise an amazing looking game and put actual screenshots of it to make people think that is how the game looks (not cinematics which are completely different, but advertising the game to look a certain way) and when you get in the game the graphics have been heavily nerfed.
Witcher 3 and No Man's Sky are HUGE examples for recent games where they showed tons of screenshots, but none of them are how the game actually looked at release.

I don't think there's any risk of someone mistaking that for gameplay.
I think cinematic trailers are okay. Problem is content that looks like gameplay, but is not actual gameplay.

Entirely unrelated. That's from a cinematic trailer that was clearly labeled as a cinematic trailer.

What I am curious about, does this apply to Early Access games? Project Genom for a recent example, it shows off so much but none of it is in game.
I bet it would.
In fact, just before releasing a MAJOR graphics update to 7 days to die last year The Fun Pimps decided to release on the banner new screenshots. it was just a week before release, they got slapped by the community for doing so, I think rightfully so.
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.
There's nothing hard to understand about your point, it's just not a very good one.
This is about using concept art and things like that as a means to show off the game.. Not about marketing tools most companies use to tell a bit of back story about their product.
You'd have to be an idiot to think that's a game-play trailer. Rules aren't made to protect idiots from themselves. These types of rules are profit motivated in the end, it's to deter reasons for refunds.

WOW has more than once over the course of 10 years used graphics to advertse their game that is very well not remotely close to what the game play was like.
I am really wanting to put all three of you guys on ignore. give it a rest please.

Those videos are made to set a tone for the world one may be entering, nothing more, nothing less. Again this is about shutting down an easy path to request a refund, it's not about shutting down typical promotional materials.

I surely hope people are not just now waking up to this? VERY shotty marketing practices are happening every minute of everyday everywhere on the internet, including this very site.
I feel this is something EASY for Valve to do to get in good with the public eye.Valve is making a ton of money from Steam and can easily enforce this without losing a single dime. However,YES as to not detract from the positive of this,it is a very good stance to take. However we should also realize that if VALVE really cared, they would have put some effort into their business BEFORE now, otherwise it just looks like Valve accepts anything and everything as long as you sign the cheques.Pretty obvious that Valve up until now has NEVER cared one bit,it usually takes a big public notice before businesses act.

well as far as i am concerned (as I mentioned in my OP on this topic) I think they should hammer down on that as well.
thanks for your input though

It will save them money in the end, as it shuts down a path of false advertising. Less refunds...

true however 'get good with the public eye' from the overwhelmly largest digital service for games in existence that is as such because the public uses said service is demonstrating that perhaps ones view of the 'public eye' isnt that accurate

so actually I think I see your point eariler. I somewhat disagree but I see where you are coming from.
basically when one looks at the scroll wheel on the game its very explicitly clear I think to most of us that we are expecting to see screenshots. however a theatrical trailer is less clear on that point. Fair enough. I think they both should but I agree the Steam game image banner is far more explict as such

Just the latest reason to remind me of why Valve's Steam service is awesome ... whereas alternatives like EA's Origin service suck eggs.
I don't know, EA's origin seems to have a better refund policy TBH, with the great game guarantee (which I'm fairly certain they had before steam put their current policy in place).
Not to mention all the Origin games I do have, I got for free from them lol. Which there are some good games in that lot.

Such a great move. Bullshots and trailers always depict things that you will never be able to do in game. Planetside 2 comes to mind.
