Just the latest reason to remind me of why Valve's Steam service is awesome ... whereas alternatives like EA's Origin service suck eggs.
I don't know, EA's origin seems to have a better refund policy TBH, with the great game guarantee. Not to mention all the Origin games I do have, I got for free from them lol. Which there are some good games in that lot.
being able to return a game that you purchased that end up not being as good as you had hoped as a key 'feature' of a service is not something to brag about.
I dont want to buy games that I want to return.
this is just how i see it anyway
return...or...breaks

I see your point there, but I'd rather be able to just turn a stinker in than come up with some arbitrary reason in the hopes that it gets approved as a means for a reasonable refund. Steam is better about it now, but it used to be a bit more convoluted. EA's rule in print seems to be a no questions asked type of deal. I have never used it though, as again all of the games in my Origin Library were obtained through on the house giveaways.
Free games though? that's always good IMO Speaking of which if anyone is interested in a free digital copy of Dungeon Keeper, it's available through on the house.

This is awesome news! I hope the positive trend with steam improvements continue.

agreed.
the reason the contrast becomes more pronouced and noticeable to me personally is that somewhat by chance Orgin is selling exactly the games i would want to return.
so the picture is ironical to me

I like how they are calling it "bullshots". It most certainly is bullshit to show non-screenshots in the screenshot areas.
It is a continual slap in the face to see the "bullshot" that NMS is insinuating their game is on their Store Page. Glad Steam is doing something about this.
fuck NMS.
This should have been done decade ago with WoW
What should have been done to WoW?
because this is exactly what the game play is like
Entirely unrelated. That's from a cinematic trailer that was clearly labeled as a cinematic trailer.
so core point completely not understood you say?
There's nothing hard to understand about your point, it's just not a very good one.
This is about using concept art and things like that as a means to show off the game.. Not about marketing tools most companies use to tell a bit of back story about their product.
WOW has more than once over the course of 10 years used graphics to advertse their game that is very well not remotely close to what the game play was like.
I am really wanting to put all three of you guys on ignore. give it a rest please.
And those videos were all labelled as cinematic trailers. Neither Steam nor anyone else considers something labelled as a cinematic to be misleading. This is about retouched/doctored screenshots, renders, and artwork that are not representative of what the user will receive that are passed off as genuine screenshots.

I would disagree with that but I understand your point and it is in my mind a valid distinction. its just one I dont agree with on what should be happening

Just an observation, but don't cinematic trailers usually include a statement that they don't represent in game footage, at least for those that don't actually represent actual gameplay?

I dont know but either way for me personally that aint good enough.
that said I do understand what everyone is saying and I do agree there is a difference but i personally feel those trailers really should stop doing that horseshit. I want to know what the game is like, not see a trailer that basically doesnt have remote dick to do with the actual game

I don't like CGI videos just for the sake of having a CGI video, but if it serves to set up or tell the story of the game then it doesn't bother me. Let's say there was a Steam page for Warcraft 3, I think it would be perfectly acceptable to have some of the in-game cinematics in the carousel, as they're perfectly representative of a portion of the game.
I still feel that same even given the context you have provided here

Cinematic trailers are not "horseshit" they are a mini art form in itself.
Some folks actually likes waiting those cinematic trailers and videos and make collections of them. They are no different than creative short movies make by pros or fans. Some people actually gives awards on those things, like any art.
Big bunch'a noobs around here don't know what a Bullshot is.
This is a bullshot.
The Bullshot
1½ oz vodka 2½ oz Campbell’s beef broth (canned beef broth is traditional here) Juice of 1 lemon wedge 2 dashes Worcestershire sauce 2 dashes Tabasco sauce
Shake all ingredients well with ice, then strain into an Old-Fashioned glass full of fresh ice. Grate a little black pepper on top.

If I own a multi-billion dollar company - I wouldn't hesitate to lay down heavy graphical shorts to project beyond the scope of my product. I do agree that cinematic shorts aren't great representations - they're inaccurate and very off-putting.
Though, Blizzard Entertainment is a AAA company, their employees are heavy weights compared to something like Hello Games. NMS's website clearly states that they're a "tiny indie studio," AND judging by the list of their releases - NMS was their attempt of a flag title. Of course, it came crashing down.
Now lets say WoW had the same blunder in its release, like NMS. ..you can all now relate. 15-30 employees vs. 5,000 employees.
Not understanding where the majority is getting the idea of developers are the f***-ups in this. Tilt your pointing finger a little over and behind by the devs' shoulders. Yes, you got it - 'Management.'
PS: By no means were there any offense intended in my comment. Previous comments led me to base this comment on the two listed companies.
As much as I applaud Valve for actually stepping up, unless they actually enforce this and its not just a shallow guideline equal with "pretty please, dont upload misleading screenshots, okay?", it wont do much.

I will take any step Steam makes to clean up the growing mess over there. Years ago, it was a reasonable assumption that if it was on Steam it was vetted and probably half-way decent. Now, it's a sewer of every unfinished "survival" game imaginable. NMS was a big disappointment, but when you've got dog feces like Divergence Online in your stable, it really is time to clean house. If cleaning means starting with the screenshots, fine. I'll take what I can get.

How do you figure? There actually was a time before Greenlighting when a dev had to go through Valve's system (Steamworks?) to get published on the service.
The landing page for that contained the following text:
"You’re making a game for the largest and greatest gaming platform on Earth—the PC. Your customers expect cutting-edge features, your business people require high–quality intel, and your software developers need state–of–the–art tools. Let Steamworks help you connect with your customers, and get down to the busy work of making fun games."
The Steam Greenlight system changed that in 2012 and then drastically changed it again in 2013 when further reduced Valve's part in the approval process.

you have kept the landing page text from Steam from 'back then' somewhere on your machine so you can refer to it in cases like this?
