POLL: The Best MMO Era?

Which MMO era was best? The pre-WoW era? WoW era? Post-WoW era*? Vote and tell us why in the comments below!

*Yes, I realize post-WoW era is subjective. For me, it was clear things were changing away from MMOs trying to copy WoW after the launch of SWTOR, along with the rise of MMOs with more action centric gameplay.

Wow era i guess...but really the premise/naming is wrong here.

Sub era vs FTP era...that is where a lot of people break when you talk the "best" era i think.

The pre-WoW era was my favorite, because my favorite MMOs, Star Wars Galaxies and City of Heroes, released during that timeframe.  I did enjoy plenty of games released during the WoW era, particularly Warhammer Online, The Matrix Online, and even Age of Conan (as messy as it was), but ultimately I had my best experiences with games early in the genre's history.

What was it about the WoW era that made it your favorite? WoW itself? Or some other games released during that time?

I think honestly it was the general attitude of gamers rather than the actual games. People back then had a different attitude towards group content and socialising. I could have just as easily voted for pre WoW its just that some of my fondest memories were back in vanila and TBC with my best friend.

Tbh, I think the indie scene and it's impact on games in general is yet to shake the mmo world. I see people shifting to a new way to approach games and not only play what is the number one because it is and shut up.

I would dare to say the best MMO Era is yet to come - but is not far.
I think VR will change things a lot in the future. I think a new era is coming, will it be better? i suspect it could be, but for people currently in their early 30's and above it wil be hard to compete through those rose coloured glasses if they are still on the gaming scene when VR really takes off.  I dont see it happening this decade though.

Even though the post WoW era is erasing unnecessary time sinks I'm just gonna have to vote for the pre-WoW era because it had the best innovation during that time period with the best concepts I've ever seen in an mmo and SWG will always be my favorite. But honestly the pre-WoW era and WoW era for me kind of overlaps........so both of those I guess.
The acronym MMORPG use to mean Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game.

But the acronym MMMORPG now currently means Microscopic Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game. Kappa.

You should just title this thread "The Rose-Colored Glasses Thread of Wistfulness"

IMO, it wasn't that great. I started playing MMOs in 1997. If I based my fun off those games of yesteryear, I would have left this genre long ago. Games are much better now. Finally they are being made for adults with lives instead of kids and social misfits with too much wasted time on their hands.

Before WoW every MMO was very unique and distinctive in game mechanics. Post WoW virtually every game settled into a fairly narrow set of features with a small innovation here and there.

You compare UO, EQ, DAOC, SB, Horizons and Eve from a mechanical standpoint and they are all very distinctive and had their own way of handling each individual game system. Even things as simple as inventory management were wildly different.

Then you look at WoW, Rift, WAR, Archeage, SWTOR and almost any other post WoW MMO and their core game mechanics are the same such that there's no learning curve jumping from one game to the next.

I'm going to vote for post-post-wow era. I really believe we'll get over this fast food of this genre soon (no offense meant) and we can expect many a virtual world to come. Kinda leaning towards the term MMOVW. Don't forget where you read it first! ;)

I am sure the pre-Wow era  started 1996 with Meridian 59 and the Realm... Even UO (1997) was out before EQ came in 1999.

Rift and TOR I can buy but the others aren't really clones unless you count Wow as an EQ clone (and EQ as a M59 clone for that matter). They are different enough mechanic wise to not really be clones even if they still have many things in common.

Yeah, I meant to put in 1997, but you guys get the idea. :)

I use to think VR was the future.  Then someone invented an Iphone and now we are getting stuck with this.

I still think it is, the question is just when it is good enough for a MMORPG. We will get a few VR MMORPGs, gamers in Japan are screaming for it but even the Vive is mainly good for car and flight sims still.

It will be at least one more generation of VR gear before it is worth to make a MMO for it, maybe more.

I'll put it this way. Games are better today. Communities are far far worse. Back then, MMOs rewarded players for teaming up and socializing. Now days, MMOs reward you for playing alone and never interacting with anyone until you're desperate for an item that can be traded or you need to do a raid or something.

I think that is what many of us who are older than 25 miss the most about older MMOs. It's why we honestly can't back to those old outdated things, but still remember them as being better.

The Pre-WoW *Era* was far better. Post is terrible. Everything is all about PvP and soloing. It wouldn't be problem if there were at least a few MMOs that required players to team up virtually all the time. Instead we just have a ton of games that are carbon copies and have the attitude of "you can pop in and out as if you were playing a single player game".

That's what MMOs are now days. Single Player MMOs. The mechanics are better, the combat is better, the visuals are better, the philosophy and communities are garbage.

Name one way that ArcheAge is a WoW clone. WoW looks like garbage, and ArcheAge is actually a pretty game, despite my feelings about it.

2003-2005 era Planetside 1 was fantastic.  One of the best games I've ever played and easily in my top ten of all times.  Planetside 2 is a giant heap of shit.  Planetside 1 seemed to be designed around making a really fun game with a lot of character choices.  Planetside 2 seemed as if they sat around a table and said, "How can we capitalize on the Planetside IP and harpoon our customers wallets for as much money as possible in the process?"

2005-2008 era EVE Online was the best time for me.  Sure the graphics sucked.  Sure there weren't nearly as many ships, no wormhole space, no citadels, but what there was during this time period was the best PVP that the game ever had.  Now that people have had more than a decade to train dozens of characters, the game is mostly capital ships online.

2008-2011 era Age of Conan is easily the best themepark I've ever engaged in.  Great PVP, engaging and difficult raids, great combat system... and generally just overall a lot of fun.

Since 2012, there hasn't been much I liked.  I tried to get into many other games and they were all pretty bad. SWTOR is a pile of crap, WildStar is a pile of crap, BDO is like walking through walls of crap.

All that being said, I'm actually excited for the future.  Camelot Unchained, Crowfall and Chronicles are all on my radar and all look like they could be the resurgence that the genre needs.

A time before every title had quest icons and zone design based on quest loops was the best IMO. The shark was jumped right about the time auto-pathing to quest givers was introduced. I am excited foe the future though. Lots of titles with real exploration on the horizon.
