Asheron's Call News - The Asheron's Call Facebook page has been updated with the sad announcement that support for Asheron's Call and Asheron's Call 2 is ending effective January 31, 2017. Calling the games a "labor of love", the notice says that the decision was not an easy one to make.

Someone mentioned in the "Standing Stones Games" thread that there was no info on Asheron's call.

    This was why.

Yup, it was a  very ominous omission from the SSG stable.

Not unexpected news, but sad nonetheless.

I pointed it out when someone dropped maybe the new studio will make AC3. Then later @flizzer even made a thread about it, and it was also talked over the other forums as well.

In some way I can see why they delayed this announcement, putting it up on the same day as the new studio, the overall tone would've been more negative...

Was to be expected... I've already posted earlier (think it was on Steam) that Turbine has been on life support for quite a while. After WB bought Turbine, nothing really happened, aside from a few small updates. Now that Turbine has (had to?) sold it's 2 main games, there's nothing really left to make a profit. It's not like AC had that many players, and Standing Stone clearly had no interest in it either...

Asheron's Call was my first foray into MMOs. Picked it up from a shelf while having Everquest Trilogy pack on order and ended up playing it for year and a half before I ever even opened up Everquest lol.

Today is a really sad day, two pillars of MMO gaming history are gone, Asheron's Calls and Turbine (as MMO developer).

Such a shame, but eventually it had to happen

Can't see it happening in this case. The plan for the last 2+ years has been to move to player run servers. WarnerBros / Turbine had no issue with this. Obviously the plans fell through.

    That call will go unanswered.

There's a reason why AC was excluded from this deal. In all likelihood, it simply wasn't financially viable to even keep it on life support.

ughhh  Horrible news , the end of an Epic game that helped shape the genre and is more in depth than most MMOs out today ..

Slowyly the classics die and will soon be forgotten.

Currently playing LOTRO but for how much longer?  Gulp, I might have to actually start playing WoW soon.  I just don't have much confidence in Pantheon if that ever gets released.

True but it have been on life support a long while.

I wouldn't mind a AC3 in the spirit of the first game though.

Was my first MMO, I was on dial-up when I downloaded the beta, it was 100mb took me a whole day. Picked it up on release day after that and it's still the best video game purchase I have ever made. The memories and stories I have with my friends will live on.

I do think that part of why most early MMOs had so few players was that. I took a year or 2 break from M59 due to my crap modem, how I loved my 2mb/s cable modem when I got it in late ´99. Suddenly you could play without lagging to death every 20 minutes, listen to music (remember Napster?) and even watch vids with a resolution good enough to recognize what you were watching.

The unique games are the ones that have gone...

Asheron's Call, City of Heroes, Vanguard, Warhammer.

    Agree, wait....Warhammer?
The first badly executed WoW clone? That Warhammer?
